Survival of children with brain tumors: SEER Program, 1973-1980.

Eight hundred eighty-seven children with brain tumors were identified by the SEER registries (1973-1980). Twenty-five percent were low-grade supratentorial astrocytomas, medulloblastomas were 23%, cerebellar astrocytomas 12%, high-grade supratentorial astrocytomas 11%, brainstem gliomas 9%, and ependymomas 8%. The worst survivals were in children less than 2 years of age, and the best were in those aged 10 to 14 years. Five-year survivals of children with cerebellar astrocytomas were 91%, low-grade supratentorial astrocytomas 71%, high-grade supratentorial astrocytomas 35%, medulloblastomas 39

Primary renal lymphoma: A population-based analysis using the SEER program (1973-2015).

OBJECTIVE: Primary renal lymphoma (PRL) is defined as a non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) restricted to kidneys without extensive nodal disease. The literature on epidemiology and outcome in PRL is limited to case reports and small case series. METHODS: We utilized Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result database (1984-2015) to study the demographic, clinical, and pathological characteristics of PRL. We conducted analysis to assess factors associated with overall survival (OS) and cause-specific survival (CSS). RESULTS: A total of 599 (0.17% of all NHL) patients were eligible for the study. The

Cancer survival and incidence from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program.

An overview of data on cancer at all sites combined and on selected, frequently occurring cancers is presented. Descriptive cancer statistics include average annual Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program incidence, U.S. mortality and median age at diagnosis, and death for the period 1996-2000. Changes during the time period 1992-2000 are summarized by the annual percent change in SEER incidence and U.S. mortality data for this period. Five-year relative survival for selected cancers is examined by stage at diagnosis, based on data from 1990-1999. In addition, 5-year conditi

The epidemiology and prognosis of patients with primary gastric T-cell lymphoma in the SEER program.

BACKGROUND: Primary gastric T-cell lymphoma (PG-TCL) is a rare hematological malignancy with few data reported. The objective of this study is to investigate the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and survivals of PG-TCL. METHODS: Totally, 164 patients with PG-TCL from 1975 to 2016 extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) database were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method was applied to plot overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). The prognostic factors of OS and CSS were explored by Cox proportional hazard regression. Nomograms were constr

Development and validation of survival nomograms for patients with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma: a SEER program-based study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to study the prognostic risk factors affecting patients with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), develop a clinical prognostic model, and assess patient survival outcomes. METHODS: Patients with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma from 2000 to 2019 were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program to extract the clinical variables used for analysis. The dataset was divided into training (70%) and validation (30%) sets based on a 7:3 ratio. Univariate and LASSO regression analyses were performed on clinical variables from the training set to identi

Cancers of the ampulla of vater: demographics, morphology, and survival based on 5,625 cases from the SEER program.

BACKGROUND: Cancers of the ampulla are unusual and morphologically heterogeneous. The NCI's SEER Program is now large enough so that unusual cancers can be studied. Based on pathologic and epidemiologic characteristics of cancer of the ampulla available in SEER, important clinicopathological correlations can be made. METHODS: All patients with cancer of the ampulla were identified between 1973 and 2005. Demographic features, distribution of histological types, age-specific incidence rates, and 5-year survival rates according to stage and histologic type were compared. RESULTS: There were 5,6

Study of completeness of the surveillance, epidemiology and end results (SEER) program case ascertainment by hospital size and casefinding source.

Factors that may enter into the completeness/incompleteness of reporting include: 1. The competence and diligence of staff. 2. Familiarity with the record systems used within each hospital department. This limited review suggested that hospitals employing their own staff for case ascertainment achieved somewhat higher completeness of reporting rates compared with institutions that relied on central registry circuit riders to pick up cases. 3. Where cases are identified through computer listings by diagnosis, errors in the coding of some cases may result in the exclusion of these cases. 4. The

Longevity and pleural mesothelioma: age-period-cohort analysis of incidence data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, 1973-2013.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the hypothesis that an increasing fraction of incident pleural mesothelioma (PM) in the US population may be related to longevity, i.e., to expansion of the population over age 75 years with an age-related elevation in risk. An age-period-cohort analysis of the SEER 9 cancer registries (1973-2013) was conducted using 5-year intervals of age, calendar period, and birth cohort after stratification into four gender-age groups (male and female; 0-74 and 75+ years). RESULTS: Gender-specific time trends in age-adjusted PM incidence by age groups were observed. Aft

Epidemiology of myelodysplastic syndromes and chronic myeloproliferative disorders in the United States, 2001-2004, using data from the NAACCR and SEER programs.

Reporting of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) and chronic myeloproliferative disorders (CMDs) to population-based cancer registries in the United States was initiated in 2001. In this first analysis of data from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), encompassing 82% of the US population, we evaluated trends in MDS and CMD incidence, estimated case numbers for the entire United States, and assessed trends in diagnostic recognition and reporting. Based on more than 40 000 observations, average annual age-adjusted incidence rates of MDS and CMD for 2001 through 200

Specific causes of death among patients with cardiac sarcoma in the United States-An analysis of The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program.

Representing 10%-25% of the primary cardiac neoplasms, primary malignant cardiac tumors (PMCT) have a poor prognosis, yet with rare incidence. Constituting more than 50% of the PMCT, cardiac sarcoma has increased not only in incidence over the past five decades but also in severity. Patients with PMCTs, especially sarcomas, have the worst prognosis when compared with other cardiac or extracardiac tumors. This retrospective study was performed using SEER*stat software, latest version 8.3.9.2(5) by accessing seer 18 registries plus data (excl AK) Nov 2020 Sub (2000-2018) for standard mortality r

Survival Among Patients With Multiple Myeloma in the United States Military Health System Compared to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program.

BACKGROUND: Access to health care is an important factor affecting survival of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) in the U.S. general population. The U.S. Military Health System (MHS) provides universal health care to beneficiaries and has been associated with improved survival across multiple malignancies. In this study, we compared survival of MHS beneficiaries with MM with MM patients from the U.S. general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Department of Defense's Automated Central Tumor Registry (ACTUR) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) databases were used to

Pediatric non-nasopharyngeal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: Analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program with review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Despite its prevalence in adults, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is considered a rare entity in pediatrics where lymphomas, neural tumors, and soft tissue sarcomas predominate in the head and neck. Given the association of squamous cell carcinoma with the human papillomavirus, a risk factor that may be present from birth, and the difficulties in staging this disease for prognostication in children, it is important to revisit nationally collected data for prevalence and outcomes assessments. OBJECTIVE: To examine a publicly available national database to describe the

Risks for noncutaneous second primary malignancy in cutaneous malignant melanoma survivors: an analysis of data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program.

BACKGROUND: It is known that malignant melanoma (MM) survivors are at increased risk of future primary MM. However, the risk for noncutaneous second primary malignancies (SPMs) is not as well-understood. METHODS: An observational study utilizing data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was performed, assessing data from patients diagnosed with primary cutaneous MM to measure overall, as well as specific, tumor type and risk of SPM. RESULTS: Of the 132,438 patients recruited in the study population (mean age 55.5 years; 54% male), 23,794 SPMs were observed (O)
