Self-paced saccades and saccades to oddball targets in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) manifest difficulty in initiation and execution of movements, particularly when movements are sequential, simultaneous or repetitive. Eye movements are particularly effective in evaluating motor impairments. We utilized a series of saccadic eye movement paradigms to explore the ability of 13 patients with mild-moderate PD and 13 age-matched healthy controls to self-pace saccades between two continuously illuminated targets, before and after an externally cued tracking period, and respond to unexpected changes in task demand. The latter was explored by mea

Eye movements in frontotemporal dementia: Abnormalities of fixation, saccades and anti-saccades.

INTRODUCTION: Oculomotor function has not been systematically studied in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and yet may offer a simple target to monitor disease activity. METHODS: We assessed fixation stability, smooth pursuit, pro-saccades, and anti-saccades using the Eyelink 1000-plus eye-tracker in 19 individuals with behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD) and 22 controls. Neuroanatomical correlates were assessed using a region of interest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis. RESULTS: Measures of fixation stability were impaired in the bvFTD group compared with controls. However, performance did

Modeling the Triggering of Saccades, Microsaccades, and Saccadic Intrusions.

When we explore a static visual scene, our eyes move in a sequence of fast eye movements called saccades, which are separated by fixation periods of relative eye stability. Based on uncertain sensory and cognitive inputs, the oculomotor system must decide, at every moment, whether to initiate a saccade or to remain in the fixation state. Even when we attempt to maintain our gaze on a small spot, small saccades, called microsaccades, intrude on fixation once or twice per second. Because microsaccades occur at the boundary of the decision to maintain fixation versus starting a saccade, they offe

Eye Blink-Associated Saccades.

Saccades function to bring targets of interest into the field of view. They are one of the four types of basic eye movements in humans, all of which are generated and modulated by components of a complex eye movement network, involving cortical eye fields, thalami, basal ganglia, cerebellum, and brainstem structures. Similarly, blinks are presumed to be generated by a blink center involving complex cortical and subcortical pathways. An association between saccades and blinks is well established; when these circuits are disrupted, normal saccadic parameters change. We report a case of a 48-year

Hypometric primary saccades and increased variability in visually-guided saccades in Huntington's disease.

Eye movement abnormalities can be distinctive and suggestive of a specific pathophysiology. To further investigate the deficits in the control of saccades in patients with Huntington's disease (HD), we investigated the ability of 11 HD patients and 11 matched controls to perform visually-guided saccades. We adopted reflexive saccade tasks involving predictable and unpredictable sequences, at different amplitudes of target step (10 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, 40 degrees ), as well as voluntary self-paced saccades. Prolongation of initiation was observed in the HD group as the target amplit

Vertical saccades in dyslexic children.

Vertical saccades have never been studied in dyslexic children. We examined vertical visually guided saccades in fifty-six dyslexic children (mean age: 10.5±2.56 years old) and fifty-six age matched non dyslexic children (mean age: 10.3±1.74 years old). Binocular eye movements were recorded using an infrared video-oculography system (mobileEBT®, e(ye)BRAIN). Dyslexic children showed significantly longer latency than the non dyslexic group, also the occurrence of anticipatory and express saccades was more important in dyslexic than in non dyslexic children. The gain and the mean velocity values

Inherited ataxia with slow saccades.

Ataxia is a symptom of cerebellar dysfunction. Slowly progressive ataxia, dysarthria in an adult with a positive family history suggests an inherited cerebellar ataxia. We present an adult with gradually progressive ataxia and slow saccades. There was history of similar illness in his son. Genetic testing for spinocerebellar ataxia 2 was positive. We discuss the various inherited ataxias, causes of acute, progressive ataxia syndromes, episodic ataxias and ataxia associated with other neurological signs like peripheral neuropathy, pyramidal features, movement disorders and cognitive decline.

Maladaptive anticipatory saccades in schizophrenia.

We compared the saccades made by 8 neuroleptic-treated and 7 drug-free schizophrenic inpatients with those made by 11 normal controls during two eye movement tasks. The first task was designed to elicit visually guided but not internally guided saccades. The second task was designed so that optimal performance required saccades be guided on the basis of an internal representation of target behavior. During the first task, schizophrenics made visually guided saccades that were as accurate as those made by control, but both drug-free and neuroleptic-treated schizophrenics made intrusive saccades

Mechanisms of saccade suppression revealed in the anti-saccade task.

The anti-saccade task has emerged as an important tool for investigating the complex nature of voluntary behaviour. In this task, participants are instructed to suppress the natural response to look at a peripheral visual stimulus and look in the opposite direction instead. Analysis of saccadic reaction times (SRT: the time from stimulus appearance to the first saccade) and the frequency of direction errors (i.e. looking toward the stimulus) provide insight into saccade suppression mechanisms in the brain. Some direction errors are reflexive responses with very short SRTs (express latency sacc

Oblique saccades in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Oblique saccades often display component stretching, in which the shorter vector in one cardinal direction is slowed so that its duration matches that of the longer vector in the orthogonal direction, resulting in a straighter trajectory. In internuclear ophthalmoplegia, adducting saccades are typically slowed while vertical saccades are unaffected. It is not known whether these slowed adducting movements are accompanied by adaptive component stretching of the vertical vector during oblique saccades. This was a cross-sectional study. We recorded the saccadic eye movement in 5 patients with rig

Initiation of visual-guided random saccades and remembered saccades in parkinsonian patients with severe motor-fluctuations.

We studied the initiation of saccades to visual-guided random time and remembered targets in a group of nine Parkinsonian patients with severe motor fluctuations and in 9 age matched control subjects. In contrast to a marked skeletomotor improvement during the "on" condition, saccadic latencies for both visual-guided random saccades and remembered saccades were increased in the patients during the "on" condition compared to the "off" condition. This result of dissociation between skeletomotor and oculomotor function indicates that common concepts of saccadic initiation in parkinsonian patients

Impairment of voluntary saccades and facilitation of reflexive saccades do not co-occur in Parkinson's disease.

Reflexive saccades (fast eye movements) and voluntary saccades activate overlapping parts of the oculomotor system. It is assumed that striatal dopamine depletion in Parkinson's disease (PD) only affects the voluntary saccadic system and that the often-reported facilitation of the reflexive saccadic system in PD is secondary to impairment of the voluntary saccadic system. If this assumption is correct, facilitation of reflexive saccades should co-occur with impaired performance of voluntary saccades in patients with PD. We measured reflexive and voluntary saccades in a group of patients with P

Do brainstem omnipause neurons terminate saccades?

Saccade-generating burst neurons (BN) are inhibited by omnipause neurons (OPN), except during saccades. OPN activity pauses before saccade onset and resumes at the saccade end. Microstimulation of OPN stops saccades in mid-flight, which shows that OPN can end saccades. However, OPN pause duration does not correlate well with saccade duration, and saccades are normometric after OPN lesions. We tested whether OPN were responsible for stopping saccades both in late-onset Tay-Sachs, which causes premature saccadic termination, and in individuals with cerebellar hypermetria. We studied gaze shifts

Parietal representation of object-based saccades.

When monkeys make saccadic eye movements to simple visual targets, neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) display a retinotopic, or eye-centered, coding of the target location. However natural saccadic eye movements are often directed at objects or parts of objects in the visual scene. In this paper we investigate whether LIP represents saccadic eye movements differently when the target is specified as part of a visually displayed object. Monkeys were trained to perform an object-based saccade task that required them to make saccades to previously cued parts of an abstract object afte

Vertical saccades and the "rider artifact".

Quantitative studies of vertical saccades are sparse, due to a lack of reliable recording techniques. In this study, electro-oculographic (EOG) and photo-electronystagmographic (PENG) techniques showed that up-directed saccades were faster than down-directed ones. In the EOG recording, however, the velocity of the up-directed saccade was correlated to the size of an artifact caused by movement of the upper eye lid. Further investigations are needed to analyse the characteristics of vertical eye movements.

Saccadic omission revisited: What saccade-induced smear looks like.

During active visual exploration, saccadic eye movements rapidly shift the visual image across the human retina. Although these high-speed shifts occur at a high rate and introduce considerable amounts of motion smear during natural vision, our perceptual experience is oblivious to it-a phenomenon known as saccadic omission. Using tachistoscopic displays of natural scenes, we rendered saccade-induced smear highly conspicuous. By manipulating perisaccadic display durations, we studied the dynamics of smear in a time-resolved manner, assessing discrimination performance of smeared scenes, as wel

Brainstem Circuits Triggering Saccades and Fixation.

Omnipause neurons (OPNs) in the nucleus raphe interpositus have tonic activity while the eyes are stationary ("fixation") but stop firing immediately before and during saccades. To locate the source of suppression, we analyzed synaptic inputs from the rostral and caudal superior colliculi (SCs) to OPNs by using intracellular recording and staining, and investigated pathways transmitting the inputs in anesthetized cats of both sexes. Electrophysiologically or morphologically identified OPNs received monosynaptic excitation from the rostral SCs with contralateral dominance, and received disynapt

Accuracy and precision of small saccades.

Despite recent advances on the mechanisms and purposes of fine oculomotor behavior, a rigorous assessment of the precision and accuracy of the smallest saccades is still lacking. Yet knowledge of how effectively these movements shift gaze is necessary for understanding their functions and is helpful in further elucidating their motor underpinnings. Using a combination of high-resolution eye-tracking and gaze-contingent control, here we examined the accuracy and precision of saccades aimed toward targets ranging from [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text] eccentricity. We show that even sma

Premature saccades: A detailed physiological analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Premature saccades (PSs) are those made with latencies too short for the direction and amplitude to be specifically programmed. We sought to determine the minimum latency needed to establish accurate direction and amplitude, and observed what occurs when saccades are launched before this minimum latency. METHODS: In Experiment 1, 249 normal subjects performed the gap saccade task with horizontal targets. In Experiment 2, 28 normal subjects performed the gap saccade task with the targets placed in eight directions. In Experiment 3, 38 normal subjects, 49 patients with Parkinson's di
