Increased sagittal abdominal diameter is associated with a higher risk of kidney stones.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the relationship between sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), a measure of abdominal obesity, and kidney stone disease (KSD) in the U.S. population. Additionally, it explores potential underlying mechanisms and evaluates the clinical utility of a predictive model. METHODS: Data were collected from 11,671 participants, including 1,136 cases of KSD. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, dose-response curves, and mediation effect assessments were employed to examine the association between SAD and KSD. A predictive model was developed and val

The sagittal abdominal diameter: Role in predicting severe liver disease in the general population.

The role of the sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) as a predictor of incident liver disease is unknown. 6626 individuals from the Finnish population-based Health 2000 Study were linked with national registers for liver-related admissions, mortality and cancer. SAD predicted incident liver disease (HR 1.32, 95% CI 1.06-1.65) when adjusted for age and sex, but the association was weaker than for waist-hip ratio (HR 1.86, 95% CI 1.35-2.55), waist circumference (HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.12-1.81), and waist-height ratio (HR 1.44, 95% CI 1.12-1.87); BMI was non-significant. In conclusion, SAD provided no ad

Sagittal abdominal diameter and waist circumference appear to be equally good as identifiers of cardiometabolic risk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are commonly used markers of cardiometabolic risk. However, sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) has been proposed as a possibly more sensitive marker of intra-abdominal obesity. We investigated differences in how SAD, WC, and BMI were correlated with cardiometabolic risk markers. METHODS AND RESULTS: This cross-sectional study investigated anthropometric and metabolic baseline measurements of individuals from six trials. Multiple linear regression and (partial) correlation coefficients were used to investigate associations

Sagittal abdominal diameter and abdominal aortic calcification are associated with incident major adverse cardiovascular events: The Manitoba Bone Density Registry.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), a measure of visceral adiposity, has been linked to major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). However, the relationship between SAD and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), a marker of subclinical vascular disease, and whether they independently and jointly predict MACE remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether weight-normalized SAD and AAC scored using a validated machine learning algorithm (ML-AAC24) are independently and jointly associated with incident MACE. METHODS: SAD and ML-AAC24 were measured from dual-energy X-ray absorptio

Development of a Parsimonious Sagittal Abdominal Diameter-Based Model for Estimating Visceral Fat Area in Central Obesity Assessment.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Visceral fat area (VFA) is a key marker of central obesity and metabolic risk, but its assessment still depends largely on imaging. Existing VFA estimation equations often rely on conventional anthropometric or laboratory indices, and their increasing complexity may compromise model stability, generalizability, and practical implementation. We aimed to develop a parsimonious sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD)-based model for estimating VFA and to evaluate its performance in two independent cohorts. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analysed two independent cohorts

The impact of using sagittal abdominal diameter to predict major cardiovascular events in European patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity is associated with diabetes type 2 and one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. We explored if sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) is a better predictor of major cardiovascular events than waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) in type 2 diabetes. METHODS AND RESULTS: The CARDIPP study consists of a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes. In this study we used data from 635 participants with no previous myocardial infarction or stroke, with a mean follow-up time of 7.1 years. SAD, WC and BMI were measured at baseline and the en

Association of dynapenic obesity defined by sagittal abdominal diameter and relative grip strength with all-cause mortality: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dynapenic obesity is associated with increased mortality, but definitions based on BMI, waist circumference, or absolute grip strength may misclassify adiposity and muscle weakness. We examined whether sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) combined with relative grip strength identifies a high-risk phenotype and explored potential explanatory pathways. METHODS: This prospective cohort included 5674 US adults followed for a median of 6.75 years. Participants were classified as Normal, Abdominal Obesity, Dynapenia, or Dynapenic Obesity based on SAD and relative grip strength. Survey-wei

Sagittal abdominal diameter: A novel and potentially superior indicator than waist circumference for diagnosis of central obesity, based on evidence from multiple data sources.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Our previous research reported a visceral fat area (VFA) estimation equation primarily based on sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), demonstrating favorable performance compared to traditional Waist Circumference (WC)-based equations. While WC is widely used for central obesity measurement, its accuracy needs improvement. This study aims to investigate whether SAD has advantages over WC in diagnosing central obesity and to determine the optimal cut-off values for diagnosis. METHODS: This cross-sectional, retrospective cohort study analyzed 6762 individuals from NHANES (2011

Positive and non-linear association of sagittal abdominal diameter-to-height ratio with stress urinary incontinence in US women: evidence from NHANES 2011-2016.

BACKGROUND: Central obesity represents a well-established risk factor for stress urinary incontinence (SUI), with sagittal abdominal diameter-to-height ratio (SADHtR) recognized as a superior anthropometric indicator of visceral adiposity. However, the evidence between the SADHtR and SUI remains scarce. This study aimed to elucidate the association between SADHtR and SUI of adult women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study incorporated 4,846 women ≥20 years from the 2011-2016 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Refining Osteoarthritis Risk Prediction: Average Sagittal Abdominal Diameter Complements and Enhances Body Mass Index With Sex-Specific Insights From National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA), the most prevalent joint disease and a leading cause of disability globally, has its disease burden inadequately captured by body mass index (BMI). As the sole quantified risk factor in current Global Burden of Disease estimates, BMI accounted for only 20% of OA burden. A critical limitation of BMI is its inability to distinguish fat distribution patterns, particularly abdominal adiposity, which is increasingly recognized as a key driver of metabolic and musculoskeletal pathologies. Herein, we hypothesize that anthropometric indicators reflecting central adipos

Sagittal abdominal diameter is a more independent measure compared with waist circumference to predict arterial stiffness in subjects with type 2 diabetes--a prospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Anthropometric measurements are useful in clinical practice since they are non-invasive and cheap. Previous studies suggest that sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) may be a better measure of visceral fat depots. The aim of this study was to prospectively explore and compare how laboratory and anthropometric risk markers predicted subclinical organ damage in 255 patients, with type 2 diabetes, after four years. METHODS: Baseline investigations were performed in 2006 and were repeated at follow-up in 2010. Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was evaluated by ultrasonography and aort

Proposed cut-off points for anthropometric and bioelectrical measures based on overweight and obesity criteria in Spanish institutionalised elderly people.

The increasing prevalence of obesity among the institutionalised elderly population and its severe consequences on health requires an early and accurate diagnosis that can be easily achieved in any clinical setting. This study aimed to determine new cut-off values for anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance measures that are superior to body mass index criteria for overweight and obesity status in a sample of Spanish institutionalised elderly population. A total of 211 institutionalised older adults (132 women, aged 84.3±7.3 years; 79 men, aged 81.5±7.3 years) were enrolled in the current c

Visceral fat mass prediction from spine DXA scans.

INTRODUCTION: Body mass index (BMI) does not account for weight distribution. Visceral fat mass obtained from total body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular risk than BMI. Sagittal abdominal diameter, the distance from the small of the back to the anterior surface of the abdomen, can be accurately measured from lumbar spine DXA scans. We hypothesized that sagittal abdominal diameter from spine DXA, alone and in conjunction with other measures, can be used to predict visceral fat mass from total body DXA. METHODOLOGY: The study utilized data from th

Ultrasonographic measurement of the adrenal gland-to-abdominal aortic ratio as a valuable method of estimating normal adrenal size in rabbits.

A wide range has been reported for the ultrasonographic measurements of the normal adrenal gland in rabbits. Therefore, having sufficient information about the normal measurements of the adrenal gland and their relationship with indicators such as weight, sex and the diameter of the internal abdominal aorta will be of great help in diagnosing diseases of the adrenal gland. In the present study, 21 healthy adult intact rabbits were selected. The abdominal cavity of the animals was examined using ultrasound; adrenal gland parameters such as length, width, height, circumference and area on the ri
