Morphological, Morphometrical and Radiological Features of the Pelvic Limb Skeleton in African Green Monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) from Saint Kitts and Nevis Islands.

The paper presents a detailed gross anatomical description of the elements of the pelvic limb in the African green monkey and provides comparative and differential elements on pelvic limb monkey osteology. The osteometric investigation adds value to the gross morphological and radiological investigation, adjoining metric data to the gross descriptive data set. The main methodology used was the gross morphological investigation, doubled by regular osteometrical and radiographical assessments. For each of the elements, several morphological aspects are described, pointing to the specific and dif

Morphological and Radiologic Features of the Skull of a Juvenile Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas, Linnaeus, 1758) from Saint Kitts and Nevis, West Indies.

The skull of a juvenile Chelonia mydas from the beaches of Saint Kitts and Nevis is described using high-resolution photographs and multi-angle radiographs to document the main cranial structures. Standard veterinary anatomical terminology was used, and osteometric measurements were obtained and compared with published data on adult individuals. The investigated juvenile green turtle skull comprises three main regions: the neurocranium, splanchnocranium, and mandible. Noteworthy features include a paired premaxilla at the snout tip, a prominent L-shaped maxilla forming much of the upper jaw, a

Extraintestinal Acanthocephalan Oncicola venezuelensis (Oligacanthorhynchidae) in Small Indian Mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) and African Green Monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus).

We identified multiple extraintestinal cystacanths during routine postmortem examination of 3 small Indian mongooses and 2 African green monkeys from the Caribbean island of St. Kitts. In mongooses, cystacanths were encysted or free in the subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscle, or peritoneal or pericardial cavities, whereas in the monkeys, they were in the cavity and parietal layer of the, tunica vaginalis, skeletal muscle, and peritoneal cavity. Morphological, histological, and molecular characterization identified these cystacanths as Oncicola venezuelensis (Acanthocephala: Oligacanthorhynchi

Canine babesiosis: A literature review of prevalence, distribution, and diagnosis in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease with worldwide distribution and global significance. Traditionally, canine babesiosis was caused by B. canis (large Babesia) and B. gibsoni (small Babesia) based on cytological examination of stained blood smears. Currently, molecular techniques have demonstrated that several Babesia species infect dogs: B. canis, B. vogeli, and B. rossi (large forms) and B. gibsoni, B. conradae, and B. vulpes (small forms). In this study, we compiled and reviewed currently available data on Babesia infections in dogs in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as on d

Molecular and morphologic characterization of Trichuris trichiura infecting free-roaming African vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) on the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts.

Human trichuriasis is an important disease caused by the soil-transmitted helminth Trichuris trichiura, which typically affects human populations in low socioeconomic situations. Natural hosts of T. trichiura include humans and certain non-human primates (NHPs), giving rise to concerns that NHPs could serve as zoonotic reservoirs of T. trichiura in locations where humans and NHPs exist in proximity. Free-roaming vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus), introduced from Africa to the Caribbean island of St. Kitts represent cause for concern given their propensity to roam within urban environments

Identification of Schistosoma mansoni Infection in a Nonhuman Primate from St. Kitts More than 50 Years after Interruption of Human Transmission.

Transmission of Schistosoma mansoni was interrupted on St. Kitts, a Caribbean island, in the 1950s. With no reported cases since that time and most Biomphalaria spp. snail populations eliminated based on surveys in the 1970s, S. mansoni has been considered eliminated on St. Kitts. In 2019, S. mansoni eggs were found in an African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) that originated from St. Kitts. Nonhuman primate (NHP) infections have been considered incidental to human infections, with infections in NHPs resolving with the elimination of S. mansoni in the human population. An NHP with

First report of Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in wild-caught Caribbean African green monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite capable of infecting all warm-blooded animals. Humans can become infected by ingesting infective oocysts from the environment or contaminated food or water, or by ingesting tissue cysts in undercooked infected meat or by handling infected meat. Caribbean African green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) are present in large numbers on the island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean, and it is not uncommon for these animals to be trapped and eaten by islanders. The aim of this study was to determine T. gondii infection in Caribbean African green monkeys.

First report of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in St. Kitts.

A 4-month-old intact male domestic shorthair kitten living in St Kitts, West Indies presented with respiratory distress, cachexia, and mucopurulent nasal discharge. Thoracic radiographs revealed a diaphragmatic hernia. The diaphragmatic hernia as well as subpleural pulmonary nodules suspicious for verminous pneumonia were identified during a postmortem examination. Histology showed multifocal to coalescing pyogranulomatous and eosinophilic pneumonia centered on larvae and morulated eggs. The lesion and nematode morphology were consistent with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus. Although Aelurostrongyl

High Leptospira seroprevalence in captive and wild-caught vervet monkeys ( Chlorocebus sabeus) on the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of global importance. Very little information is available on Leptospira infection in nonhuman primates. We report herein a high seroprevalence (49.4%; 95% confidence interval: 41.6-57.2%) to Leptospira serovars in vervet monkeys ( Chlorocebus sabeus) on the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts. Monkeys bred in captivity ( n = 81) had a significantly higher seroprevalence compared to wild-caught monkeys ( n = 81; p < 0.05). Seroprevalence to serovar Bataviae was significantly higher in monkeys bred in captivity and was higher to serovar Bratislava in wild-caught

Biosecurity assessment and seroprevalence of relevant poultry diseases in Saint Kitts commercial poultry premises.

Saint Kitts (St. Kitts) and Nevis is a federation of two islands located within the West Indies. St. Kitts is anecdotally known to have commercial egg production, but disease prevalence and biosecurity practices of these farms have not previously been studied. In this study, we evaluated biosecurity practices of 11 commercial farms through a biosecurity questionnaire given to the farmers and collected blood and oropharyngeal swab samples from birds at each farm to evaluate disease prevalence. All surveyed egg-layer farms had deficiencies in conceptual, structural, and procedural biosecurity. F

Dengue in the campus community of an overseas American university: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: After a large outbreak of dengue virus (DENV) serotype-3 in Saint Kitts and Nevis (SKN) in 2008, we performed a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of anti-DENV immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in expatriate and local persons affiliated with an American veterinary school there. METHODOLOGY: This campus community comprised mostly expatriate students and faculty and Kittitian administrative staff. In 2009, a stratified random sample of students, faculty and staff was invited to complete an electronic survey to assess risk factors for DENV and provide blood for testi

Hemosiderosis in St. Kitts African green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus).

Hepatic hemosiderosis has not been systematically studied in African green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus). We aimed to determine the prevalence of histologic hepatic hemosiderosis in this species, demographic predictors of its presence and severity, and the quantitative relationship between histological grade and hepatic iron concentration. We evaluated liver samples of 155 African green monkeys from a research colony in St. Kitts (24 juveniles, 89 adults, 42 geriatrics) using histology (hematoxylin and eosin, Perls Prussian blue) to semiquantitatively grade (0-4) hemosiderin deposits. The tip of the iceberg: high-risk contacts for hemorrhagic fevers of swine in the Caribbean.

There are major gaps in understanding the transmission risk of hemorrhagic fevers of swine, such as African swine fever (ASF) and classical swine fever (CSF), in the Caribbean because animal-trade data are limited and fragmented. To address this gap, we reconstructed country-level directed trade networks from United Nations Comtrade data for 2022-2024 merged with participant input and analyzed them using social network analysis; nodes represent Caribbean jurisdictions with at least one trade tie, and edges represent reported movements of live pigs or pork products. Using these baselines, we co

Foot care knowledge, attitudes and practices among patients with diabetic foot and amputation in St. Kitts and Nevis.

About one-third of admissions to the surgical unit annually are diabetes foot infections in need of amputation In St. Kitts and Nevis. However, the risk factors related to diabetes foot and amputation remain unknown. This study investigated factors associated with diabetic foot and amputation (DFA). Retrospective case control study design, and purposive and quota sampling method was used to recruit the participants. Patients with and without DFA were interviewed at two main hospitals, several primary health centres, and a private doctor's office during July and August 2018. Self-development qu

Radiography for the diagnosis of spirocercosis in apparently healthy dogs, St. Kitts, West Indies.

Fifty apparently healthy island dogs presenting to the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM), St. Kitts, West Indies for neutering were used in this prospective study. Twelve of the dogs (24%) were diagnosed with spirocercosis based on a positive fecal analysis and characteristic lesions seen during esophagoscopy. Routine thoracic survey radiographs revealed changes previously reported with spirocercosis in 10/12 (sensitivity=83%) infected dogs, but in none of the uninfected dogs (38/38; specificity=100%). The most common radiographic changes were an increased fluid density wit
