Saint Lucia revisited.

The eastern Caribbean island of Saint Lucia is now famous in parasitological history as the setting for a major programme of schistosomiasis control'. Perhaps less well-known are the island's effective control of many intestinal parasites, and elimination of malaria, such that the current patterns of mortality and other demographic indicators now resemble those of industrialized countries. More recently, the island has become the focus for another community-based health programme as the Caribbean region again comes to grips with Aedes aegypti and its recently imported relative, Aedes albopictu

Multisectoral action to prevent noncommunicable diseases in Saint Lucia.

OBJECTIVE: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for approximately 80% of annual mortality in Saint Lucia, with the results of national World Health Organization (WHO) STEPwise approach to NCD risk factor surveillance surveys in 2012 and 2020 indicating increasing prevalences of hypertension, obesity and physical inactivity. In response, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition launched the St. Lucia Moves Initiative in 2022, aligned with the Caribbean Moves framework and WHO's Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2013-2030. This study aimed to

Survey of Schistosomiasis in Saint Lucia: Evidence for Interruption of Transmission.

Saint Lucia at one time had levels of schistosomiasis prevalence and morbidity as high as many countries in Africa. However, as a result of control efforts and economic development, including more widespread access to sanitation and safe water, schistosomiasis on the island has practically disappeared. To evaluate the current status of schistosomiasis in Saint Lucia, we conducted a nationally representative school-based survey of 8-11-year-old children for prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infections using circulating antigen and specific antibody detection methods. We also conducted a questio

Risk behaviours and healthcare needs of homeless drug users in Saint Lucia and Trinidad.

In the Caribbean AIDS has become the leading cause of death among those aged 15-45. The homeless are at high risk due to the nexus of mobility, psychiatric disorders and substance use, particularly crack. Seventy-four homeless, out-of-treatment drug users were recruited in Saint Lucia and Trinidad to assess risk behaviour and healthcare needs. Information was collected in several domains: medical, mental health, substance use, sexual risk, and barriers to care. Ninety-five percent of the sample reported crack cocaine use within the previous 30 days. Approximately 35% of the sample had ever bee

Suicidal Behaviour among School-Going Adolescents in Saint Lucia: Analysis of Prevalence and Associated Factors.

Suicide poses a debilitating threat to adolescents' lives worldwide. Although suicide prevention efforts are evident globally, there is limited evidence on the prevalence and correlations of suicidal behaviour among school-going adolescents in Saint Lucia. We used a dataset from the 2018 Global School-based Student Health Survey to examine the prevalence and associated factors of suicidal behaviour among 1864 students from schools in Saint Lucia. Prevalence rates of 25.5%, 22.1%, and 17.5% were found for suicidal ideation, suicide plan, and suicide attempt, respectively. After adjusting for ot

Analysis of demographics, examination findings and the social circumstances of paediatric sexual assault cases at a public hospital in Saint Lucia.

INTRODUCTION: Child sexual assault (CSA) complainants face profound emotional pain. Sexual assault (SA) is often underreported for several reasons. Furthermore, delays in the reporting increase the difficulty in confirming its occurrence. CSA profiles are affected by demographics, social culture and institutional factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence, demographics, examination and social circumstances of CSA cases referred at a public hospital in Saint Lucia. METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted which examined the demographics, examination findings and socia

An Examination of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Intentions Related to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Among Undergraduate Students in Saint Lucia.

OBJECTIVE: In the Caribbean, cancer ranks as the second leading cause of mortality. Without interventions, the incidence is predicted to increase by 66% within the next decade, with over 56,000 women being diagnosed with cervical cancer annually and more than 28,000 succumbing to the disease. However, lifesaving prevention and treatment measures are available. This research sought to explore potential differences in knowledge, attitudes, and willingness to receive human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations among male and female undergraduate students at a chosen Community College in St. Lucia. Detection of Cell-Fusing Agent virus across ecologically diverse populations of Aedes aegypti on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia.

Background. Outbreaks of mosquito-borne arboviral diseases including dengue virus (DENV), Zika virus (ZIKV), yellow fever virus (YFV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) have recently occurred in the Caribbean. The geographical range of the principal vectors responsible for transmission, Aedes (Ae.) aegypti and Ae. albopictus are increasing and greater mosquito surveillance is needed in the Caribbean given international tourism is so prominent. The island of Saint Lucia has seen outbreaks of DENV and CHIKV in the past five years but vector surveillance has been limited with the last studies dating b

Update on the Geographic Distribution of the Intermediate Host Snails of Schistosoma mansoni on St. Lucia: A Step Toward Confirming the Interruption of Transmission of Human Schistosomiasis.

To provide information to guide considerations of declaring interruption of transmission of human schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma mansoni on St. Lucia, we undertook an island-wide survey in June-July 2022 to determine the presence of Biomphalaria snails, the intermediate hosts of S. mansoni, and their infection status. Snail surveys were carried out at 58 habitats to determine presence of Biomphalaria snails followed by examination of the collected snails for evidence of infection with S. mansoni. Furthermore, water samples were collected at the snail habitats and screened for presence of S

Parasitic infection with Trichuris trichiura influences plasma levels of soluble HLA class I.

High levels of sHLA-I (soluble HLA--class I) have been correlated with rejection episodes in solid organ transplant recipients and with graft versus host disease in bone marrow recipients. Studies of human infection with parasitic worms of the gut have suggested that certain individuals may be genetically predisposed to intense infection. In this study, the influence of parasitic helminth infection on levels of sHLA-I in plasma was investigated in 155 HLA typed individuals from St. Lucia, exposed to the gut parasite Trichuris trichiura. The results confirmed previous findings showing increased
