Why Saints?

A Saint is a person who is recognized as having an exceptional degree of Holiness, likeness, or closeness to the Godhead. Many religions use similar concepts, albeit different terminologies, to venerate persons worthy of some honor. Saints across various cultures and religions have the following family resemblances: exemplary model, extraordinary teacher, wonder worker or source of benevolent power, intercessor, life often refusing material attachments or comforts, and possession of a special and revelatory relation to the Holy. From the beginning of civilization, man has placed importance on

[Patron saints of anesthesia].

Patron saints act as facilitators between God and humans. Humans appeal to patron saints for support in devastating, often futile situations in life. Patron saints may intercede for trade and professional guilds, every so often they hold a protective hand over objects. Saint Barbara is venerated as the patron saint of surgeons. In anesthesia she also oversees barbiturates, protects anesthetized patients, anesthetists and anesthesia nursing personnel. Within the Anglo-American language area Saint René is venerated by anesthetists and anesthesia nursing personnel. During anesthesia or critical c

[Witches saints and other diseases].

Salem, was the site at which Massachusetts was established in 1632, however, it is more famous for the witch-hunt that took place there 60 years later by some riotous puritans. Several teenaged girls that were struck by delirious fits and seizures captured the center of the stage. The local physicians, who could not come up with a medical solution, explained the strange phenomenon as witchcraft. The new world's moral code was brought to trial along with 20 innocent men who were accused, convicted and executed for the crime of practicing witchcraft. In this article we will try to acquit these m

[Urology in medieval medicine explained through the saints].

The Middle Ages were a period influenced by the Christian faith. In medicine the saints were venerated as intercessory figures in the cure of diseases. Particularly, urology has 6 saints that stand out: firstly, the couple of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian, venerated for healing diseases related to the urinary tract and kidney stones. There is also Saint Margaret of Antioch, who is represented with a belt that surrounds the kidneys, which is why she is associated as the protector of nephrology. St. Liborius of Le Mans healed an archbishop from "the disease of stones," which made him the patron

Plague, policy, saints and terrorists: a historical survey.

Plague is an infectious disease of humans and animals caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. During the Middle Ages millions of people in Europe died from plague, whose current mortality-if untreated-ranges from 50% to 90%. The plague has been a great protagonist in history because it has often been grimly present in the collective events of humans. Its plurisecular history, tied to the whole chain of ecological balance, has had a strong influence on the collective imagination on account of its sudden occurrence and unavoidable mortality. In the past, the passage from contagion to illness en

Holy Medicine: Patron Saints of Wounds Due to Animal Bites.

The cult of saints in Western Europe developed during the late period of antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Their importance to European society was undeniable; holy medicine was the only hope for people, because there were no doctors. The number of saints had increased over the years, and people sought medical help from them through prayer and other religious practices. Some of the saints became "specialized" in treating various wounds and dermatologic diseases. During our research, we tried to determine whether the cult of saints led to the develop-ment of hospitals that treated skin disea

Holy medicine: Patron saints of wounds due to animal bites.

The cult (system of religious beliefs and rituals) of saints in Western Europe appeared in the 3rd century CE and gained momentum from the 4th to the 6th centuries. Its importance for European society in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages was undeniable; holy medicine was the only hope for sick people because the number of physicians was insufficient, and usually physicians were helpless in the face of most of the ailments that plagued society at that time. Three saints with deformed extremities in an Italian Renaissance altarpiece.

A fifteenth-century Florentine altarpiece painted by the Pollaiuolo brothers, Antonio (1433-1498) and Piero (1443-1496), shows three saints with evident deformities of the hands and feet. The pathologies concerned are tentatively identified, and various rationales for their presence in the painting are discussed. Of particular importance is the location of the altarpiece in a chapel which houses the tomb of the Cardinal of Portugal, Prince James of Lusitania (1433-1459). It is argued that both the artistic style of the day and the religious symbolism of the Cardinal's funeral chapel contribute

[The Saint syndrome].

In connection with two cases authors review our current body of knowledge on Saint's triad that means the concomitant occurrence of cholelithiasis, hiatus hernia and colonic diverticulosis. Though each component of this syndrome is fairly common, the Saint's triad is relatively seldom encountered. It does happen so because not all the components are likely to cause clinical symptoms. Consequently diagnosis and subsequent therapy are targeted at the dominating symptoms. On the other hand, the existence of the syndrome is also not sufficiently known in clinical practice. Authors stress that in t

The postcranial dimensions of the La Chapelle-aux-saints 1 Neandertal.

The La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1 Neandertal has figured prominently in considerations of Neandertal body size and proportions. In this context, a reassessment of its major long bones and a reassembly of its principal pelvic elements (sacrum and right ilium) was undertaken. There are secure measurements for its humeral and radial lengths and its femoral head diameter, but the femoral and tibial lengths were almost certainly greater than previous values. The resultant humeral, femoral and tibial lengths are similar to those of other male Neandertals, its femoral head diameter is among the largest kn

Pathology and the posture of the La Chapelle-aux-Saints Neandertal.

The depiction of the Neandertals as incompletely erect was based primarily on Boule's (1911, 1912a, 1913) analysis of the La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1 partial skeleton. The inaccurate aspects of Boule's postural reconstruction were corrected during the 1950s. However, it has come to be believed, following Straus and Cave (1957), that Boule's errors of reconstruction were due to the diseased condition of the La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1 remains, rather than to Boule's misinterpretation of morphology. The abnormalities on the La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1 postcranium include: lower cervical, upper thoracic,

Saint Lucia revisited.

The eastern Caribbean island of Saint Lucia is now famous in parasitological history as the setting for a major programme of schistosomiasis control'. Perhaps less well-known are the island's effective control of many intestinal parasites, and elimination of malaria, such that the current patterns of mortality and other demographic indicators now resemble those of industrialized countries. More recently, the island has become the focus for another community-based health programme as the Caribbean region again comes to grips with Aedes aegypti and its recently imported relative, Aedes albopictu

Ergotism and Saint Anthony's fire.

It has been widely accepted that ergot is a fungal disease caused by infection with the parasitic Claviceps purpurea leading to the development of typical black kernels n the plant. Ingestion of infected rye grains containing ergot alkaloids-usually in the form of contaminated rye bread-causes poisoning, also known as ergotism. The negative impacts of ergot contamination of grain on the health of humans and animals were first documented in ancient times. The history of ergotism shows the influence of food on human health. Although ergot has been known for ages, until the 18th century, its natu

[The Museum of the Hôpital Saint-Louis].

In 1866, Alphonse Devergie, physician supported by Armand Husson, manager of the Assistance publique created a permanent exhibition of teaching images of skin diseases at the Hôpital Saint-Louis (Paris). Twenty-five years later the initiative was made concrete by the inauguration of a building housing a museum, a medical library and rooms for outpatients. Enriched by the works of dermatologists, moulageurs - mainly Jules Baretta -, painters and photographs the museum became worldwide renown exhibiting the largest wax moulages collection of the world. Today the didactic value of the moulages is
