Retinal projections in European Salamandridae.

The retinal projections to the brain were studied in three species of European Salamandridae using anterograde transport of horseradish peroxidase and autoradiography. The results obtained were basically identical for all species and confirmed earlir findings on the fiber supply to the preoptic nucleus and the basal optic neuropil. In the anterior thalamus projections to three distinct terminal fields are clearly visible: (i) the diffusely stained corpus geniculatum thalamicum, (ii) the neuropil of Bellonci, pars lateralis, and (iii) a dorsomedial terminal field, the neuropil of Bellonci, pars

A New Species of Pachytriton (Amphibia: Caudata: Salamandridae) from Anhui, China.

China is a global hotspot for amphibian biodiversity, yet under-explored montane regions harbor undiscovered cryptic species. Using integrative taxonomy, we describe a new salamandrid species, Pachytriton cheni sp. nov., from Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve, Anhui. Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial (ND2, cytb) and nuclear (RAG1, POMC) genes strongly support it as a monophyletic sister lineage to P. granulosus, with significant mitochondrial p-distances (4.39-10.22%) and unique nuclear haplotypes. Bayes factor species delimitation under the multispecies coalescent model (MSC) decisively rejec

Sperm transport after insemination in the Alpine newt (Triturus alpestris, Caudata, Salamandridae).

The goal of this study was to test if sperm transport to the spermathecae in the Alpine newt (Triturus alpestris) requires active co-operation of the female. Artificial insemination of anaesthetised female newts was conducted using spermatophores collected from courting males and with sperm duct contents collected from sacrificed males. Sperm was present in the spermathecae of 9 out of 10 females inseminated with the spermatophores but in only 1 out of 8 females inseminated with sperm duct contents. The females of both groups laid some eggs after insemination, and a portion of these eggs in gr

Salamandra salamandra (Amphibia: Caudata: Salamandridae) in Portugal: not all black and yellow.

The fire salamander complex is quite diverse in the Iberian Peninsula where nine subspecies of Salamandra salamandra are currently recognized. Here, we analysed the geographical distribution of the subspecies S. s. gallaica and S. s. crespoi using partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of 168 individuals from 12 locations in Portugal. Our results support the existence of a deep lineage divergence between the two subspecies, with non-overlapping geographical distributions except in two contact zones: one in Sesimbra on the western coast, and another in Alcoutim on the southeas

Normal table of embryonic development in the Chinhai Spiny Newt Echinotriton chinhaiensis (Salamandridae).

Following standardized vertebrate embryonic staging criteria, this study establishes a normal developmental staging table for the critically endangered Chinhai Spiny Newt, Echinotriton chinhaiensis, a narrowly distributed salamandrid species endemic to Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, eastern China. At a constant temperature of 20 °C, the entire embryonic period from oviposition to hatching lasted approximately 31.4 days, and the full developmental process was subdivided into 36 sequential stages. Stages 1-17 encompassed cleavage and neurulation, whereas Stages 18-36 corresponded to organogenesis-in

Ossification and development of vertebrae in the Balkan crested newt Triturus ivanbureschi (Salamandridae, Caudata).

Vertebral morphology, development, and evolution have been investigated for many decades, especially in the recent evo-devo era. Nevertheless, comparative data on development and ossification modes within the major tetrapod groups are scarce and frequently suffer from the use of a simplistic approach, resulting in simplistic generalizations about the formation of tetrapod vertebrae. Here, we describe the development and ossification of trunk vertebrae in Triturus ivanbureschi (Salamandridae, Caudata) and compare the results with published data on other related taxa. In so doing, we focus on th

Influence of Artificial Light at Night on Thyroid Gland Histology in Triturus Newts (Urodela, Salamandridae).

Artificial light provides many benefits to humankind, allowing fundamental activities to continue during night; however, it also poses multiple risks to humans and wildlife and is recognized as a significant driver of global environmental change. Changes in natural light/darkness cycles caused by artificial light at night (ALAN) can affect amphibians, the most threatened vertebrate group globally. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of long-term exposure to constant nighttime light on the morphology of the thyroid glands of Triturus ivanbureschi metamorphosed juveniles using his

Regionalization and morphological integration in the vertebral column of Eurasian small-bodied newts (Salamandridae: Lissotriton).

Serially homologous structures may have complex patterns of regionalization and morphological integration, influenced by developmental Hox gene expression and functional constraints. The vertebral column, consisting of a number of repeated, developmentally constrained, and highly integrated units-vertebrae-is such a complex serially homologous structure. Functional diversification increases regionalization and modularity of the vertebral column, particularly in mammals. For salamanders, three concepts of regionalization of the vertebral column have been proposed, recognizing one, two, or three

Morphological and taxonomic reexamination on a crocodile newt recently described from Japan (Urodela, Salamandridae, Echinotriton).

A crocodile newt, Echinotriton raffaellii, recently described from the Amami islands in the Ryukyu archipelago, western Japan has been regarded as Amami lineage of E. andersoni from the Okinawa islands, to which it is morphologically very similar, but genetically divergent. In the original description of E. raffaellii, only two specimens, including one born in captivity, were examined and only limited morphological comparisons with E. andersoni were made. Here we examined the morphological characteristics of E. raffaellii with an ample set of specimens, compared them with those of E. andersoni

Characterization, Comparison of Two New Mitogenomes of Crocodile Newts Tylototriton (Caudata: Salamandridae), and Phylogenetic Implications.

Mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) are valuable resources in molecular and evolutionary studies, such as phylogeny and population genetics. The complete mitogenomes of two crocodile newts, Tylototriton broadoridgus and Tylototriton gaowangjienensis, were sequenced, assembled, and annotated for the first time using next-generation sequencing. The complete mitogenomes of T. broadoridgus and T. gaowangjienensis were 16,265 bp and 16,259 bp in lengths, which both composed of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 1 control region. The two mitogenomes had high A + T conte

Effect of photoperiod on testicular function in blinded and non-blinded marbled newts, Triturus marmoratus (caudata, salamandridae).

Adult male marbled newts (Triturus marmoratus) were collected at the beginning of the spermatogenetic period and exposed to different photoperiods (natural photoperiod with progressively increasing daylengths, total darkness, 8L:16D, 12L:12D, 16L:8D, and continuous light) for 3 months at 20°C. To evaluate the effect of photoperiodic input via pineal gland photoreceptors, two additional groups of newts were blinded by a non-aggressive method (an elastic rubber cap was adjusted to the head to cover the eyes but not the pineal photoreceptors). These animals were exposed either to the natural phot

Skull development in the Iberian newt, Pleurodeles waltl (Salamandridae: Caudata: Amphibia): timing, sequence, variations, and thyroid hormone mediation of bone appearance.

The cranial ossification sequence in Pleurodeles waltl is widely used in phylogenetic analyses of amphibian origin and evolution. However, the patterns published to date are far from completely resolved and contain certain discrepancies. Based on a large sample of P. waltl specimens ranging from early post-hatching larvae to post-metamorphic newts, we determined the most common cranial ossification sequence and revealed its intraspecific variations. Since thyroid hormones (THs) are involved in the mediation of skull development in salamanders, we studied the role of THs in the cranial developm

New fossil evidence from the Late Cretaceous of Europe (southern France) deepens the origin of Salamandridae (Urodela) and refines the biogeography of the family.

Salamandrids are today the most diverse family of salamanders of the Palearctic, including 146 species and 22 genera. The oldest fossil occurrences of the group are so far dated to the Paleocene (around 60 Myr ago), except for an isolated vertebra in the late Maastrichtian of Spain, although molecular studies place the origin of the group earlier, in the Late Cretaceous. New findings from the Upper Cretaceous of France fill this stratigraphic gap, significantly predating the previous oldest fossil occurrence of the group by 10 Ma. The material includes isolated vertebrae from four localities w

First decoding and characterization of the mitogenomes of the crocodile newts Tylototriton anguliceps and T. ngoclinhensis (Caudata, Salamandridae) from Vietnam and a phylogenetic assessment of the genus Tylototriton.

Tylototriton anguliceps and T. ngoclinhensis are two species of crocodile newts native to Vietnam. In this study, we assemble and describe for the first time the complete mitochondrial genomes of T. anguliceps (16,720 bp) and T. ngoclinhensis (16,260 bp). Both genomes consist of 37 genes, which is consistent with most other vertebrates, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs). The arrangements of these mitochondrial genes are the same in T. anguliceps and T. ngoclinhensis, but some genes have slight differences in their lengths, start

Step-by-step protocol for alternative injury models in newt cardiac regeneration.

Although the heart is one of the most important organs for animal survival, its regenerative capacity varies among animal species. Notably, adult mammals cannot regenerate their hearts after damage such as acute myocardial infarction. In contrast, some vertebrate animals can regenerate the heart throughout their lives. Cross-species comparative studies are important to understand the full picture of cardiac regeneration in vertebrates. Among the animal species able to regenerate the heart, some urodele amphibians, such as newts, possess a remarkable capacity for this process. Standardized meth

Cryo-injury procedure-induced cardiac regeneration shows unique gene expression profiles in the newt Pleurodeles waltl.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac regeneration in the adult mouse is not substantial. Some vertebrates, such as newts and zebrafish, regenerate the heart throughout their lives. To understand how regenerative abilities differ among animal species, comparative research has been conducted in animals like mouse, zebrafish, and newt. For those purposes, cryo-injury is suitable as an experimental model for the pathological condition of human myocardial infarction. In fact, cryo-injury procedures are common in mouse and zebrafish. RESULTS: In the present study, we induced cryo-damage on the ventricle in Iberian

Chemical Ecology of the North American Newt Genera Taricha and Notophthalmus.

The North American newt genera Taricha and Notophthalmus (order Caudata) are well known for the combination of potent toxicity, aposematic coloration, and striking defense postures that protects these animals from predation. This suite of traits is centered around the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin, which causes paralysis and death in metazoans by disrupting the initiation and propagation of electrical signals in the nerves and muscles. Tetrodotoxin defends newts from predation across multiple life history stages and its role in generating arms-race coevolution between Taricha newts and garter snake

Evidence for the use of a high-resolution magnetic map by a short-distance migrant, the Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris).

Newts can use spatial variation in the magnetic field (MF) to derive geographic position, but it is unclear how they detect the 'spatial signal', which, over the distances that newts move in a day, is an order of magnitude lower than temporal variation in the MF. Previous work has shown that newts take map readings using their light-dependent magnetic compass to align a magnetite-based 'map detector' relative to the MF. In this study, time of day, location and light exposure (required by the magnetic compass) were varied to determine when newts obtain map information. Newts were displaced from
