The use of waters with a low saline content (oligomineral waters) in the feeding of babies.

The problem of the dilution of foodstuffs for early infancy is discussed, with particular reference to artificial milks. The authors briefly consider the influence of calcium salts in the course of curdling, both for milks enriched with such salts and in diluted milks, as well as the importance of a correct well-dosed saline content in the diet for the early stages of infancy. They then control experimentally, using scalar dilutions (1:100; 1:1000; 1:5000) of pepsin at a known titre, the coagulation of commercial powdered milk and of fresh cow's milk, diluted with various types of mineral wate

Ecological peculiarities of Eurasian inland saline and alkaline soda waters.

Inland permanently alkaline soda waters (ASW) are characterized by the dominance of Na+, HCO3- and/or CO32-, whereas non-permanently alkaline saline waters (SW) are typically dominated by Na+, Cl- and/or SO42- ions. Eurasian ASW and SW constitute unique ecosystems characterized by various ecological peculiarities, where the combination of shallow water depth, intermittent hydrological cycle, high diurnal water temperature fluctuations, high inorganic turbidity, a wide salinity range, alkaline pH, high concentrations of coloured dissolved organic carbon, and hypertrophic conditions creates comp

Lanthanum modified bentonite behaviour and efficiency in adsorbing phosphate in saline waters.

Lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB, commercially called Phoslock®) has been widely applied in freshwater systems to manage eutrophication. Little is known, however, about its behaviour and efficiency in binding filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP) in saline environments. We assessed if LMB would adsorb phosphate over a range of salinities (0-32 ppth) comparing the behaviour in seawater salts and equivalent concentrations of NaCl. Lanthanum release from the bentonite matrix was measured and the La species prevailing in saline environments were evaluated through chemical equilibrium modelling. We

Naegleria fowleri in saline waters: emerging threat of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in Karachi.

Naegleria fowleri, the "brain-eating amoeba," causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rapidly fatal central nervous system infection acquired mainly through nasal exposure to contaminated water. This thermophilic protozoan thrives in warm freshwater and has been increasingly reported in Karachi, Pakistan, where cases now exceed US totals over the past five decades. A recent fatality in February 2025 involved a 36-year-old woman with no recreational water exposure aside from domestic ablution, highlighting the organism's persistence in saline municipal water. The type-2 genotype in P

The effect of pumping saline groundwater for desalination on the fresh-saline water interface dynamics.

Over the past few decades, seawater desalination has become a necessity for freshwater supply in many countries worldwide, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. One potentially high-quality feed water for desalination is saline groundwater (SGW) from coastal aquifers, which has lower fouling propensity than seawater. This study examines the effect of pumping SGW from a phreatic coastal aquifer on fresh groundwater, particularly on the dynamics of the fresh-saline water interface (FSI). Initially, we constructed a 3D finite-element model of a phreatic coastal aquifer by using the FEFLOW s

Effects of botulism on ducks drinking saline water.

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) ducklings (2 wk old) were given water from natural saline wetlands or fresh water as drinking water for 1 or 2 wk prior to, and after, receiving material containing Clostridium botulinum type C toxin. Water with conductivity ranging from 3,460 to 6,690 mu mhos/cm had no detectable effect on the occurrence or severity of clinical signs of botulism. Ducks drinking water with conductivity of 7,130 mu mhos/cm for 1 wk prior to receiving toxin had more severe clinical signs and greater mortality than did birds drinking fresh water. Ducks given the same water for 2 wk pr

Microbiological Investigation of Persistent Mortalities in Litopenaeus vannamei Grown in Low Saline Waters in India.

Abstract Microbial diseases are a serious hindrance to successful shrimp aquaculture. The Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei is an exotic species recently introduced in India to supplement the failing aquaculture of the Asian tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon due to viral diseases. However, after a brief initial success, the aquaculture of L. vannamei is also experiencing serious problems due to microbial diseases. In this study, we conducted a microbiological investigation into the problem of persistent mortalities in selected L. vannamei farms on the southeastern coast of India. The infect

Rivers of salt: the extent of salinization in European running waters.

Freshwater salinization is emerging as a widespread but poorly documented challenge across Europe. Using random forest models applied to river-reach scale data, this study provides a continent-wide quantification of salinization and identifies its key drivers. Of the 35 countries with available data, we demonstrate that 28 contained rivers where salinity more than doubled relative to baseline, with increases reaching up to 11,377 µS/cm. Across the European river network, 14% showed salinity increases of up to 100% and a further 26% up to 50%. The analysis revealed previously underreported hots

Proton-driven sodium secretion in a saline water animal.

Aquatic animals residing in saline habitats either allow extracellular sodium concentration to conform to environmental values or regulate sodium to lower levels. The latter strategy requires an energy-driven process to move sodium against a large concentration gradient to eliminate excess sodium that diffuses into the animal. Previous studies of invertebrate and vertebrate species indicate a sodium pump, Na+/K+ ATPase, powers sodium secretion. We provide the first functional evidence of a saline-water animal, Aedes taeniorhynchus mosquito larva, utilizing a proton pump to power this process.

Salinity and Water-Related Disease Risk in Coastal Bangladesh.

An increase in surface and ground-water salinity due to climate change is reported to have become a great threat to the health of coastal inhabitants in Bangladesh. However, little is known about how much such salinity affects the risk of water-related diseases and how such risk can be mitigated in the field. This research examines the association between water-related diseases and coastal salinity along with sociodemographic and anthropometric factors. We conduct questionnaire surveys with 527 households: 273 subjects from the non-salinity and 254 subjects from the salinity rural coastal area

Soil and river water salinity dynamics in coastal Bangladesh.

Changes in soil and water salinity pose critical challenges to agriculture, water management, and livelihoods in deltaic environments globally, and particularly in the densely populated Asian mega-deltas. Using observations from 24 stations over nearly two decades (2004-2022) in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta of Bangladesh, our scientific study examined the influences of seasonal weather and climate conditions, tropical cyclones, and hydrology on the seasonal variability in soil and river water salinity. We applied statistical analyses including cross-correlation, seasonal-trend decomposi

Ultrapure Water Production by a Saline Industrial Effluent Treatment.

A membrane system was applied for ultrapure water production from the treatment of saline effluent from the canned food industry. The industrial effluent presented a high saline concentration, including sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfates, and magnesium. The effluent was treated using a system of reverse osmosis (RO) and a post-treatment process consisting of ion exchange resins (IEXRs). The RO was accompanied by the addition of a hexametaphosphate dose (2, 6, and 10 mg/L) as an antiscalant to avoid the RO membrane scaling by minerals. In turn, IEXRs were used for water deioni

Autophagy-mediated regulation of psoriasis biomarkers by Dead Sea and magnetized saline waters: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Dysregulated autophagy is linked to abnormal keratinocyte differentiation and persistent psoriatic inflammation. Smart fluids, such as Dead Sea Water (DSW) and saline magnetized water (MW), have emerged as potential non-pharmacological autophagy activators. This study evaluates their effects on psoriasis-like keratinocytes, focusing on calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a neuropeptide involved in pruritus and inflammation, and secreted frizzled-related protein 4 (SFRP4), whose reduced expression contributes to epidermal hyperplasia. The role of autophagy in mediating these eff

Impact of salinities, metals and organic compounds found in saline oil & gas produced water on microalgae and cyanobacteria.

This work evaluates the impact of salinity and the toxicity of some metals and organic compounds commonly found in produced waters on the growth of model photosynthetic organisms. Five strains of marine microalgae and one cyanobacteria (i.e. Dunaliella salina, Nannochloropsis oceanica, Tetraselmis suecica, Picochlorum costavermella, Coccomyxa simplex and Synechococcus rubescens) were tested in microplates as well as the freshwater Chlorella vulgaris selected as reference. Results revealed that D.salina was able to growth at high salinity (up to 135 g·L-1). Copper was the most toxic metal for a

Hypertonic saline, isotonic saline, water restriction, long loops diuretics, urea or vaptans to treat hyponatremia.

Introduction: Hyponatremia is the most common fluid and electrolyte abnormality. It is associated with much higher morbidity and mortality rates than found in non hyponatremic patients.Areas covered: When the physician is faced to a hyponatremic patient he first has to confirm that hyponatremia is associated with hypoosmolality. Then he must answer to a series of questions: What is its origin? Is it acute or chronic? Which treatment is the most appropriate? We will discuss the various options for the treatment of hypotonic hyponatremia. For a better comprehensive approach of the treatment we w

Sterile water or saline solution for inflating the balloon of pediatric catheters.

BACKGROUND: Urethral catheterization is a standard clinical procedure, but pediatric data on balloon-related complications remain scarce. Balloon failure during removal may be associated with the type of inflation media and the size of the catheter lumen. Adult findings may not apply to pediatric catheters due to structural differences. OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of sterile water and 0.9 % saline solution as inflation media in pediatric Foley catheters and evaluate balloon deflation and crystalline deposits under controlled in vitro conditions. METHODS: Foley catheters (8Fr, 10Fr,
