We present a case of submandibular duct calculi diagnosed using transoral sonography. Sonography is the first-line imaging modality of salivary gland calculi. However, it is performed via a transcutaneous approach, which is limited in identifying small salivary duct calculi. Using an intraoral transducer, transoral sonography can visualize the submandibular duct and detect the presence of small calculi, thus overcoming the limitations of transcutaneous sonography.

BACKGROUND: The effort to use minimally invasive strategies in the treatment of human sialolithiasis in principle seems to allow the clinical application of pneumatic lithotripsy because of the small diameters of the probes involved. While this kind of therapy is already used successfully in urology, we investigated the method during in vitro and animal experiments.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The treatment of stones and tissue utilized the pneumatic lithotripter "Lithoclast". This system works with ballistic energy and is similar to a biologic "pneumatic hammer". Thirty salivary calculi were trea

Salivary gland calculi account for the most common disease of the salivary glands. Most of the salivary calculi are small in size. Some calculi that reach several centimeters are reported as megaliths or giant calculi in the literature. They may occur in any of the salivary gland ducts but are most common in Wharton's duct and in the submandibular gland. This report presents clinical and radiographical sign of an unusually large sialolith. A patient came with pain in the floor of mouth. There was a swelling on floor of mouth on the left side. Radiographical examination revealed large irregular

Salivary calculi are frequently formed in the submandibular duct. The most common sites are where the duct turns round the distal edge of the mylohyoid, where the duct crosses the lingual nerve, and just distal to the duct orifice. Untreated calculi can cause obstruction and glandular atrophy, and then may exfoliate through the floor of the mouth. An unusual case of cutaneous exfoliation of a salivary gland stone is presented. The importance of early diagnosis and treatment of sialolithiasis are discussed.

Sialolithiasis occurs due to the calculous concretion in salivary ducts or glands, but it is rare in childhood. In this paper, a case of sialolithiasis with a submandibular duct calculus observed in a 2-year-old girl is reported. This case is one of the youngest, based on a review of the literature regarding sialolithiasis found in Japan. The retrospective survey was made in 30 cases of sialolithiasis in children under 10 years of age which were reported in the Japanese literature with clear descriptions of age, sex and location. The summaries are as follows: 1) Sex difference: The difference

Sialolithiasis is the most common disease of salivary glands. It is a condition characterized by the obstruction of a salivary gland or its excretory duct due to the formation of calcareous concretions, resulting in salivary ectasia and even determining the subsequent dilatation of the salivary gland. The sialolith usually measure from 1 mm to less than 10 mm. They rarely measure more than 15 mm. Infrequently giant salivary gland calculi (GSGC) >15 mm have been reported in the literature. The submandibular gland and its duct appear to be the sites most susceptible to this disease.THE AIMS OF TH

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic fragmentation and removal of artificial calculi in a live porcine model employing intracorporeal pneumatic lithotripsy. In this experimental study, 7 submandibular ducts were accessed and artificial calculi placed. A salivary pneumatic lithotripter probe was inserted through an interventional sialendoscope to fragment the calculi. A salivary duct catheter was then used to flush stone fragments, followed by endoscopy to assess complete fragmentation and ductal trauma. Ultimately, 7 artificial stones (3-10 mm, 4F/5F) were succes

OBJECTIVES: Salivary duct disorders are the second most common cause of obstruction after calculi. Magnetic resonance sialography has been recently proposed as a means of diagnosing a heterogeneous group of salivary disorders, and so we compared it with sialoendoscopy in evaluating stenoses and sialectasia in 24 patients with obstructive symptoms and ultrasonographic results negative for calculi or masses.
METHODS: All of the patients (19 of whom had recurrent unilateral or bilateral swollen parotid glands and 5 of whom also had recurrent swollen submandibular glands) underwent dynamic color

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that acute submaxillitis involves salivary duct obstruction. Obstacle characteristics and treatment were analyzed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients presenting with an episode of acute submaxillitis between 2009 and 2015 were retrospectively included. All underwent salivary duct imaging and/or sialendoscopy, with pathologic examination if the salivary gland was removed for etiologic diagnosis. For etiological treatment, if the causal lesion could not be treated by isolated sialendoscopy, surgery used a direct approach assi

The presence of multiple sialoliths (calculi) in parotid duct is considered extremely rare. Parotid duct sialoliths are usually small and single. Multiple calculi formation, in any case, is an uncommon finding in the salivary glands. Salivary lithiasis is comparatively common in the Wharton's duct due to its tortuous ascending course and chemical composition of saliva of submandibular gland. The mechanism of sialolith formation in Down's syndrome patients is not completely known, and there are seldom cases reported in the literature available. The present case report is a very rare combination

Salivary gland calculi account for the most common disease of the salivary glands. The majority of sialoliths occur in the submandibular gland or its duct and are a common cause of acute and chronic infections. This case report describes a patient presenting with an unusually large submandibular gland sialolith, the subsequent patient management, the aetiology, diagnosis and various treatment modalities available for management of salivary gland calculi depending on their site and size.

Sialolithiasis is a major cause of salivary gland dysfunction. Chronic sialadenitis promotes stone formation. Conversely the presence of calculi causes chronic sialadenitis. It is clear that the genesis of calculi lies in relative stagnation of a calcium rich saliva. The submandibular gland is a more common site than the parotid, sublingual and other minor salivary glands for calculi formation. This case is presented here because of its unusual size of the wharton's duct stone for its clinical interest.

Three phleboliths and ten salivary calculi in the submandibular duct were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and computer aided microanalyser (CMA). The surface of the phleboliths was rather even with some irregularity. According to their surface structure the salivary calculi were divided into three types: the rock-like type, the granular type, and the globular type. The phleboliths were classified into two types according to their cut surface: the calcified-core type, and the uncalcified-core type. The core structure was similar to the surface structure in the calcified-core typ

PURPOSE: To prospectively investigate the efficacy of a wire basket extractor in the retrieval of salivary calculi and establish selection criteria for suitable cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients (14 male, 11 female; age range, 13-69 years) with salivary calculi (20 submandibular, five parotid) were treated by using a commercially available wire basket extractor with intermittent fluoroscopic guidance.
RESULTS: Elimination of calculi was accomplished in 10 (40%) cases. In an additional seven (28%) cases, either part of the calculus was removed or whole calculi wer

Salivary calculi, preponderating in the submaxillary duct, produce distension of the ductile system, as well as pain and fever, when they enlarge sufficiently to obstruct salivary flow. Although calculi may pass spontaneously by eroding into the oral cavity, they must usually be removed surgically under local anesthesia. The device presented simplifies extraction of multiple sialoliths. Soft tissue trauma is minimized, and patient comfort is significantly increased.

The submandibular gland is the most common major salivary gland vulnerable to sialadenitis secondary to sialolithiasis. We report a case of submandibular steinstrasse causing sialadenitis in a 45-year-old male and describe the appearances on high-resolution ultrasonography. Endoscopic-assisted excision of calculi was done. Post-operative recovery was uneventful and the patient was discharged after one week. The patient has been on follow-up for six months with no complaints of recurrence. Multiple stacked calculi within the Wharton's duct is an exceedingly rare occurrence. Steinstrasse creates

Sialolithiasis is one of the most common diseases of salivary glands. More than 80% of the sialoliths occur in the submandibular gland. While most of the calculi are less than 10 mm in size, 7.6% are larger than 15 mm and are classified as giant sialoliths. We demonstrate a rare case of asymptomatic giant sialolith in the left Wharton's duct with a total atrophy of the left submandibular salivary gland. A 48-year-old female patient presented with lumping sensation for 1 month. A left mouth floor mass was found accidentally during examination and was later revealed to be a painless sialolithias
