Salivary Alpha-Amylase Reactivity in Breast Cancer Survivors.

The two main components of the stress system are the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and sympathetic-adrenal-medullary (SAM) axes. While cortisol has been commonly used as a biomarker of HPA functioning, much less attention has been paid to the role of the SAM in this context. Studies have shown that long-term breast cancer survivors display abnormal reactive cortisol patterns, suggesting a dysregulation of their HPA axis. To fully understand the integrity of the stress response in this population, this paper explored the diurnal and acute alpha-amylase profiles of 22 breast cancer surviv

Characterization of salivary alpha-amylase binding to Streptococcus sanguis.

The purpose of this study was to identify the major salivary components which interact with oral bacteria and to determine the mechanism(s) responsible for their binding to the bacterial surface. Strains of Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, and Actinomyces viscosus were incubated for 2 h in freshly collected human submandibular-sublingual saliva (HSMSL) or parotid saliva (HPS), and bound salivary components were eluted with 2% sodium dodecyl sulfate. By sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western transfer, alpha-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) was

Altered Salivary Alpha-Amylase Secretion in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis.

PURPOSE: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) frequently present with psychological disturbances as well as dysfunctions of autonomic nervous system (ANS). Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) secretion is predominantly controlled by sympathetic nervous activity, while salivary fluid secretion is by parasympathetic nervous activity. Thus, it is speculated that alterations of salivary secretion may be addressed in UC populations. METHODS: Thirty-five UC patients as well as 32 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Saliva samples before and after citric acid stimulation were collected fr

Trends in waking salivary alpha-amylase levels following healing lucid dreams.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) is considered a marker of autonomic nervous system activity in stress research, and atypical waking sAA responses have been reported for traumatized individuals. Lucid dreams, characterized by a dreamer's awareness of their dream state while remaining asleep, have shown promising preliminary evidence of their potential to enhance mental health. This study's objective was to evaluate sAA in relation to healing lucid dreams. METHODS: Participants experiencing PTSD symptoms attended a six-day workshop delivered via live video designed to teach technique

Salivary flow and alpha-amylase: collection technique, duration, and oral fluid type.

There has been renewed interest in salivary alpha-amylase (sAA), a surrogate marker of autonomic/sympathetic activity, in biosocial research on stress vulnerability, reactivity, and recovery. This study explored the impact of saliva flow rate on sAA measurement by examining the influence of (1) the technique used to collect oral fluid-synthetic swab, cotton pledget, hydrocellulose microsponge, or passive drool; (2) collection point duration--the length of time the technique is employed (1-5min); and (3) oral fluid type--whole unstimulated saliva (not absorbed by any material) or oral fluid sam

Salivary alpha-amylase and hormones levels of young adults with different body composition.

The aim of this study was to assess the differences in salivary biomarker levels of young adults classified according to body fat accumulation. One hundred and thirty-four volunteers were evaluated (mean age 21 ± 2 years). Body composition was calculated through skinfold thickness: supra-iliac, biceps, and triceps, sub-scapular. Body fat percentage (BF%) was used to classify subjects according to fat tissue accumulation: normal-weight (n = 37, 19 females, 18 males), overweight (n = 42, 30 females, 12 males), and obese (n = 55, 42 females, 13 males). Saliva samples were collected 30 min after a

Salivary alpha-amylase and noradrenaline responses to corticotropin-releasing hormone administration in humans.

Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) is a digestive enzyme mainly responsible for the hydrolysis of starch and glycogen in the oral cavity. Since the secretion of sAA is largely under the control of the sympathetic nervous system, sAA activity is also considered to be a non-invasive marker of sympathetic activation. However, the direct association between sAA activity and other sympathetic parameters remains questionable. Therefore, we employed the corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) stimulation test to pharmacologically activate the sympathetic nervous system and to analyze plasma noradrenaline res

Characteristics of salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase as psychobiological study outcomes in palliative care research.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial interventions are rapidly emerging in palliative care. However, randomized trials often fail to provide evidence for their effectiveness with regard to patient-reported outcomes. Stress biomarkers could complement self-report data, but little is known about their feasibility, acceptance, and interpretability. METHODS: Therefore, we designed a randomized crossover trial in which 42 patients in a palliative care unit participated in both a brief mindfulness intervention (MI) and a resting state control condition (CC) on two consecutive afternoons. On each day, we collec

Salivary Alpha-Amylase Activity Levels in Catatonic Schizophrenia Decrease after Electroconvulsive Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in schizophrenia has been detected by electrophysiological methods, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Several studies have suggested that measuring salivary alpha-amylase activity levels is useful for evaluating the ANS activity and that sAA levels increase in schizophrenia and correlate with Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) scores. However, no study has examined the relationship between sAA activity levels and symptoms of schizophrenia with catatonic state. METHODS: We present the case of a 59-year-old female with

Salivary cortisol, alpha-amylase and heart rate variation in response to dental treatment in children.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and stress are usually related to the dental treatment situation. The objective was to investigate salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase levels (salivary biomarkers) and heart rate in children undergoing a minor dental procedure (dental prophylaxis). STUDY DESIGN: In total, 31 children (range 84-95 months) of both genders without caries or history of dental treatment/pain/trauma were selected. Three saliva samples were gathered: one prior to dental prophylaxis, one immediately after and one ten minutes later. Weight and height were assessed, and heart rate was evaluated prior

The salivary alpha amylase over cortisol ratio as a marker to assess dysregulations of the stress systems.

Different factors have been associated with changes in the regulation of the two major stress response systems of the human body, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Changes in these systems have been associated with various (psycho)pathologies across adulthood, and are thus frequently assessed within the context of allostatic load. Early Life Adversity (ELA) has been identified as one such factor. Individuals with histories of ELA show evidence of elevated basal and reactive salivary alpha amylase (sAA) levels (a marker of SNS activity), blu

Serum alpha-amylase isozymes in mumps: estimation of salivary and pancreatic isozymes by isoelectric focusing.

Serum alpha-amylase isozymes were separated into three major isozymes by thin-layer gel isoelectric focusing and detected by a starch-iodine zymogram procedure. Of the three groups of isozymes, one (S isozyme) corresponded to a salivary specific form, one (P isozyme) to a pancreatic specific form and the third (SP isozyme) to isozymes of similar isoelectric point common to both secretions. The levels of total alpha-amylase and of these three isozymes were estimated in the sera of 54 patients with mumps. Total alpha-amylase and salivary isozyme concentrations were greatly increased in the sera

Psychologically aggressive parenting and later aggression: Salivary alpha-amylase reactivity and sex as moderators.

Psychologically aggressive parenting (PAP) exposure negatively affects children's development of aggression. Nevertheless, not all children exposed to PAP display aggressive behaviors. Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity may influence the impact of early adversity on aggression. This study examines whether SNS reactivity and sex moderate the link between psychologically aggressive parenting (PAP) during childhood and later aggression. Emerging adults (N = 182, mean age = 19.03 years, 53 % female) retrospectively reported on their childhood PAP and current aggression. Salivary alpha-amyla

Sexual orientation and salivary alpha-amylase diurnal rhythms in a cohort of U.S. young adults.

Sexual minorities in the United States are at elevated risk of prejudice, discrimination, and violence victimization due to stigma associated with their sexual orientation. These stressors may contribute to physiological stress responses and changes in the regulation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). To date, no studies have examined the associations among minority sexual orientation, recent stressful events, and diurnal salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) patterns. The present study included 1663 young adults ages 18-32 years (31% men, 69% women) from the Growing Up Today Study, a prospective

Salivary alpha-amylase activity and cortisol in horses with acute abdominal disease: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate salivary alpha-amylase (sAA), considered a non-invasive biomarker for sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, and salivary cortisol as possible pain-induced stress biomarker, in horses with acute abdominal disease. Therefore, a prospective observational study was performed in which both biomarkers were analyzed in a group of horses with acute abdomen syndrome, and compared with a group of healthy control horses by an unpaired Student's t-test. In addition, the possible relationship between both biomarkers, the score in Equine Acute Abdominal

Salivary alpha-amylase response following repeated psychosocial stress in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined autonomic responses (salivary alpha-amylase, sAA; heart rate, HR) to repeated psychosocial stress as a candidate mechanism linking autonomic hyper-arousal and sensitization to the occurrence of panic disorder (PD). METHODS: Thirty-three patients with PD and 34 healthy controls were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) twice on consecutive days. RESULTS: sAA changes were comparable between PD and controls on both testing days with overall decreasing sAA responses (delta) on day two. In contrast, HR delta increased on day two in both groups. The diurnal course of salivary alpha-amylase in nurses: an investigation of potential confounders and associations with stress.

In psychoneuroendocrinology research, salivary measures have become increasingly important. While several studies focus on determinants of salivary cortisol such as age, gender, and gynaecological variables, less research has focused on confounding variables of salivary alpha-amylase (sAA). In a large sample of nurses (N=215) we analyzed the impact of age, gender, intake of oral contraceptives, smoking, coffee consumption as well as psychological parameters, such as work stress and burnout, on basal diurnal sAA release. Saliva was collected at 07:00 h, 11:30 h, 17:30 h, and 20:00 h on a workin
