Salmon lice--impact on wild salmonids and salmon aquaculture.

Salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, are naturally occurring parasites of salmon in sea water. Intensive salmon farming provides better conditions for parasite growth and transmission compared with natural conditions, creating problems for both the salmon farming industry and, under certain conditions, wild salmonids. Salmon lice originating from farms negatively impact wild stocks of salmonids, although the extent of the impact is a matter of debate. Estimates from Ireland and Norway indicate an odds ratio of 1.1:1-1.2:1 for sea lice treated Atlantic salmon smolt to survive sea migration com

Differential Effects of Adult Salmon Lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis on Physiological Responses of Sockeye Salmon and Atlantic Salmon.

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis, a type of sea lice (family Caligidae), is enzootic in marine waters of British Columbia and poses a health risk to both farmed Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar and wild Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. At the adult stage, sea lice infections can often result in severe cutaneous lesions in their salmonid hosts. To evaluate and compare the physiological consequences of adult L. salmonis infections, smolts of Atlantic Salmon and Sockeye Salmon O. nerka were exposed to 2 (low), 6 (medium), or 10 (high) adult female lice/fish. Mean lice abundance decreased over

Salmon lice from aquaculture reduce marine survival of Atlantic salmon.

Salmon lice from marine salmon aquaculture have been shown to impact the survival of wild salmon migrating through aquaculture areas, but quantifying the level of impact has proven difficult. This difficulty has led to the use of randomised control trials. These trials comprise paired releases of typically hatchery-origin groups of untreated salmon smolts and those with a prophylactic treatment against salmon lice, to provide an estimate of the level of increased marine survival due to the treatment, as a proxy to inform such effects on wild salmon. Here, we use data from previously published

Infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV) mucosal infection in Atlantic salmon.

All viruses infecting fish must cross the surface mucosal barrier to successfully enter a host. Infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV), the causative agent of the economically important infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., has been shown to use the gills as its entry point. However, other entry ports have not been investigated despite the expression of virus receptors on the surface of epithelial cells in the skin, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the conjunctiva. Here we investigate the ISAV mucosal infection in Atlantic salmon after experimental immersion (b

Declining wild salmon populations in relation to parasites from farm salmon.

Rather than benefiting wild fish, industrial aquaculture may contribute to declines in ocean fisheries and ecosystems. Farm salmon are commonly infected with salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), which are native ectoparasitic copepods. We show that recurrent louse infestations of wild juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), all associated with salmon farms, have depressed wild pink salmon populations and placed them on a trajectory toward rapid local extinction. The louse-induced mortality of pink salmon is commonly over 80% and exceeds previous fishing mortality. If outbreaks continu

Organophosphate poisoning of Atlantic salmon in connection with treatment against salmon lice.

Three incidents with high mortality in Atlantic salmon after trichlorfon treatment against salmon lice are described. All 3 incidents occurred at water temperatures of 12 degrees C or higher. The mean brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of dead fish was less than 20% of normal activity, while survivors showed mean activities of 22-61% of normal levels. Dichlorvos residues in muscular and liver tissues ranged from nondetectable levels to 0.2 micrograms/g tissue. The strongest inhibition of brain AChE was found in association with the highest dichlorvos residues. Substantial AChE-inhibiti

Atlantic salmon infected with salmon lice are more susceptible to new lice infections.

Aggregation is commonly observed for macroparasites, but its adaptive value remains unclear. Heavy infestations intensities may lead to a decrease in some fitness-related traits of parasites (e.g. parasite fecundity or survival). However, to a dioecious parasite, increased aggregation could also increase the chance of finding individuals of the opposite sex. In a laboratory experiment, we tested if previous experience with salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) affected susceptibility of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to later exposure to the same parasite species. We found that currently infect

Comment on "Declining wild salmon populations in relation to parasites from farm salmon".

Krkosek et al. (Reports, 14 December 2007, p. 1772) claimed that sea lice spread from salmon farms placed wild pink salmon populations "on a trajectory toward rapid local extinction." Their prediction is inconsistent with observed pink salmon returns and overstates the risks from sea lice and salmon farming.

Ocular Manifestations of Infectious Salmon Anaemia Virus Infection in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar).

Eyes are essential sensory organs needed by teleost Atlantic salmon for high visual acuity and survival in both the wild and in aquaculture settings. In this work, we assessed the ocular manifestations of Infectious Salmon Anaemia Virus (ISAV) infection in Atlantic salmon by a cohabitation-mediated infection assay and histological and immunohistochemical approaches. The findings reveal that Atlantic salmon with a systemic ISAV infection displayed ISAV antigen accumulation in specific ocular tissues and significant ocular morphological changes that could compromise visual acuity. Modelling salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, reproduction on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

The aim of this study was to model sea lice levels and the effect on reproduction by a stochastic simulation model and to evaluate the uncertainty of lice estimates based upon counts. Two empirical data sets were examined to parameterize the models. An overall fit of the data to the Poisson distribution was found and thus was used as the base of the stochastic models. In the model, salmon lice reproduction is not linear with the number of adult females and at low lice loads a smaller proportion of the adult female lice will reproduce. Depending on the variance structure, it was estimated that

Effects of laboratory salmon louse infection on osmoregulation, growth and survival in Atlantic salmon.

Anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) rely on long ocean migrations to build energy stores for maturation and spawning. In seawater, wild Atlantic salmon are threatened by high salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation levels resulting from intensive salmonid sea-cage aquaculture. Salmon lice infection can cause a stress response and an osmotic imbalance in the host. The lice infection intensity threshold values for these responses, however, remain to be identified in Atlantic salmon. In order to define this under laboratory conditions, individually tagged F1 wild origin Atlantic po

Diurnal changes in salmon GnRH secretion in the brain of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou).

The day-night changes of salmon GnRH (sGnRH), which is secreted from various brain regions, were analyzed in maturing and matured masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou). In maturing males, the levels of sGnRH secreted from the olfactory bulb (OB), terminal nerve (TN), and ventral telencephalon and preoptic area (VT+POA) were all significantly higher during midnight than daytime. However, the contents of sGnRH in the pituitary gland during midnight were not higher than those during daytime. In maturing females, the levels of sGnRH secreted from the VT+POA were higher during midnight than daytime, and

Ontogenic origin of salmon GnRH neurons in the ventral telencephalon and the preoptic area in masu salmon.

During the ontogeny of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou, neurons producing the salmon type of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (sGnRH) were first detected in the olfactory epithelium of the eyed egg and, subsequently, in the brain, suggesting a migration of these cells. Among sGnRH neurons distributed from the olfactory nerve (ON) through the preoptic area (POA), those in the ventral telencephalon (VT) and the POA are indicated to regulate gonadotropin secretion. Thus, it is of interest to know whether all the sGnRH neurons originate from the olfactory epithelium. In the present study, we examined

Two differing salmon GnRH precursor mRNAs are co-expressed in the brain of sockeye salmon.

The localization of two salmon-type gonadotropin-releasing hormone (sGnRH) precursors, pro-sGnRH-I (short type) and pro-sGnRH-II (long type), was investigated by using in situ hybridization techniques in the brain of the landlocked sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka. We used 30-mer oligonucleotide probes complementary to pro-sGnRH-I and pro-sGnRH-II cDNA. No significant differences were observed in the localization of sGnRH neurons expressing pro-sGnRH-I and pro-sGnRH-II mRNAs; both were expressed in the olfactory nerve, the olfactory bulbs, the regions between the olfactory bulb and telenceph

A salmon lice prediction model.

Salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are parasites on salmonid fish and a density-dependent constraint to the sustainable farming of salmonids in open net pens. To control the parasites, fish farmers in Norway are required to count the number of salmon lice in different developmental stages on a subset of the fish each week. Furthermore, they must ensure that the number of adult female lice per fish does not increase beyond a specified threshold level. Here we present a model that may assist farmers in the salmon lice management. The model can predict the numbers of salmon lice in different d

[Salmon patch: a descriptive study].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: salmon patch is a congenital venous malformation that usually affects the midline. Although it is very common, few studies have analyzed its prevalence or predisposing factors. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of salmon patch in a group of newborn infants from a health care area in northwest Spain and to assess its association with neonatal and maternal variables. PATIENTS AND METHODS: a descriptive study was undertaken of live newborn children seen in the neonatal unit of the Department of Pediatrics at Hospital Arq

Haff disease after eating salmon.

While fish consumption is considered a component of a heart-healthy diet, many illnesses have been associated with eating contaminated fish. The authors describe two cases of muscle weakness and rhabdomyolysis that occurred after eating salmon. Cases of rhabdomyolysis and muscle weakness after consumption of fresh water fish have rarely been reported in the United States but have been frequently reported from the Baltic region. This illness is known as Haff disease. While the etiology is unknown, it is felt to be a toxin. Palytoxin, found in marine fish, has been associated with rhabdomyolysis

Salmon caviar-induced anaphylactic shock.

Foods, particularly shellfish and nuts, are commonly implicated as causes of anaphylaxis. Salmon caviar, to our knowledge, is an exceedingly rare cause of anaphylactic shock. This study describes a patient who experienced anaphylactic shock on her initial ingestion of caviar. Skin testing and inhibition assays using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were performed. On the percutaneous test, the patient had a 7 x 9 mm/15 x 55 mm wheal/ erythema reaction to caviar liquid. Caviar liquid caused 68, 73, and 73% inhibition of immunoglobulin E (IgE) binding at concentrations of 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0

ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF HOMING SALMON.

When adult spawning salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 0. kisutch) arrive at the "home" pond, most regions of the brain are electrically inactive, but the olfactory bulbs and posterior cerebellum are relatively highly active. Infusion of various natural waters from nearby sources other than the home pond into the olfactory sac produces little or no change in spontaneous electroencephalographic patterns recorded from the olfactory bulbs. Water from the home pond, however, produces a vigorous response of high amplitude. These findings suggest that olfaction is an important factor in guidance duri
