Molecular insights into farm animal and zoonotic Salmonella infections.

Salmonella enterica is a facultative intracellular pathogen of worldwide importance. Infections may present in a variety of ways, from asymptomatic colonization to inflammatory diarrhoea or typhoid fever depending on serovar- and host-specific factors. Human diarrhoeal infections are frequently acquired via the food chain and farm environment by virtue of the ability of selected non-typhoidal serovars to colonize the intestines of food-producing animals and contaminate the avian reproductive tract and egg. Colonization of reservoir hosts often occurs in the absence of clinical symptoms; howeve

Virulence of invasive Salmonella Typhimurium ST313 in animal models of infection.

Salmonella Typhimurium sequence type (ST) 313 produces septicemia in infants in sub-Saharan Africa. Although there are known genetic and phenotypic differences between ST313 strains and gastroenteritis-associated ST19 strains, conflicting data about the in vivo virulence of ST313 strains have been reported. To resolve these differences, we tested clinical Salmonella Typhimurium ST313 and ST19 strains in murine and rhesus macaque infection models. The 50% lethal dose (LD50) was determined for three Salmonella Typhimurium ST19 and ST313 strains in mice. For dissemination studies, bacterial burde

Association between precipitation events, drought, and animal operations with Salmonella infections in the Southwest US, 2009-2021.

BACKGROUND: Temperature and precipitation have previously been associated with Salmonella infections. The association between salmonellosis and precipitation might be explained by antecedent drought conditions; however, few studies have explored this effect. METHODS: Using an ecological study design with public health surveillance, meteorological (total precipitation [inches], temperature [average °F], Palmer Drought Severity Index [PDSI, category]), and livestock data we explored the association between precipitation and Salmonella infections reported in 127/141 counties from 2009 to 2021 in

Antimicrobial resistance in multistate outbreaks of nontyphoidal Salmonella infections linked to animal contact-United States, 2015-2018.

Animal contact is an established risk factor for nontyphoidal Salmonella infections and outbreaks. During 2015-2018, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other U.S. public health laboratories began implementing whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of Salmonella isolates. WGS was used to supplement the traditional methods of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for isolate subtyping, outbreak detection, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for the detection of resistance. We characterized the epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of multistate salmonellosis out

Infection, colonization and shedding of Campylobacter and Salmonella in animals and their contribution to human disease: A review.

Livestock meat and offal contribute significantly to human nutrition as sources of high-quality protein and micronutrients. Livestock products are increasingly in demand, particularly in low- and middle-income settings where economies are growing and meat is increasingly seen as an affordable and desirable food item. Demand is also driving intensification of livestock keeping and processing. An unintended consequence of intensification is increased exposure to zoonotic agents, and a contemporary emerging problem is infection with Campylobacter and Salmonella spp. from livestock (avian and mamm

Multidrug-resistant Salmonella strains from food animals as a potential source for human infection in Iran.

This study aimed to determine the frequency and characterization of Salmonella isolates from food-producing animals and human diarrheal samples in Shiraz, Iran. Overall, 105 Salmonella isolates were obtained from chicken meat (70/100, 70.0%), beef (19/100, 19.0%), lamb (11/100, 11.0%), and human stool (5/295, 1.7%). S. Infantis (40.9%), S. Enteritidis (29.5%), and S. Paratyphi B (8.6%) were the most prevalent serotypes. Totally 59.1% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant. High resistance to nalidixic acid (67.6%), tetracycline (62.9%), and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (42.3%) were observed

Influence of a probiotic strain of Enterococcus faecium on Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104 infection in a porcine animal infection model.

The beneficial effects of probiotic Enterococcus spp. in different hosts, such as mice and humans, have previously been reported in several studies. However, studies of large domestic animals, as well as challenge studies with pathogenic microorganisms, are very rare. Here, we investigated the influence of oral treatment of pigs with the probiotic bacterium Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415 on Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104 infections in weaning piglets. Clinical symptoms, fecal excretion, the organ distribution of Salmonella, and the humoral immune response (immunoglobulin G [Ig

Differentiation of Salmonella vaccinated and infected animals by serological detection of antibody to T3SS effector SsaK in an indirect ELISA.

The differentiation of animals that are vaccinated and those that are naturally infected with Salmonella is difficult by conventional serological tests. We have shown here an indirect Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detection of Salmonella infection based on the presence of a Type III secretory effector SsaK in the sera.

The role of exposures to animals and other risk factors in sporadic, non-typhoidal Salmonella infections in Michigan children.

Salmonellosis is largely a major foodborne disease. However, contact with animals particularly reptiles, has been increasingly recognized as a risk factor for Salmonella infection among children. The major risk factors for salmonellosis in Michigan children have not been assessed. Therefore, we have evaluated the association between Salmonella infections and contact with animals among Michigan children aged ≤ 10 years by conducting a population-based case-control study. A total of 123 children with laboratory-confirmed Salmonella infections and 139 control children, who had not experienced sym

Outbreaks of Salmonella enterica infections linked to animal contact: Demographic and outbreak characteristics and comparison to foodborne outbreaks-United States, 2009-2014.

In the United States, multistate Salmonella outbreaks are most commonly linked to a food source; however, contact with live animals can also result in outbreaks of human illness. To characterize Salmonella outbreaks linked to animal contact and examine differences compared to foodborne outbreaks, we analysed data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS) from 2009 to 2014 with a primary mode of transmission listed as "animal contact" or "food." Four hundred and eighty-four outbreaks with animal contact or foodborne transmis

Salmonella types isolated from the gulf of Aarhus compared with types from infected human beings, animals, and feed products in Denmark.

A 2-year examination for Salmonella was conducted in the gulf of Aarhus, which receives waste water from local industries and from about 100,000 inhabitants. An approximately rectilinear relationship is shown between the most probable number of Escherichia coli and species of Salmonella. Salmonella species can be demonstrated with the same frequency in inlets and outlets of the treatment plants. Data on the distribution of Salmonella types in the gulf of Aarhus and in Oeresound outside Copenhagen (1 million inhabitants) in 1966 and 1968 and the distribution in man, animals, and feeding stuff d

Salmonella infections in white ibis nestlings in urban areas as a result of environmental contamination reveal a potential health risk to humans and animals.

Salmonella is an important zoonotic pathogen of wildlife and humans. Adult white ibis (Eudocimus albus), an abundant bird in urbanized landscapes in Florida, have a high Salmonella prevalence (26%). Salmonella surveillance of nestlings improves our understanding of transmission and infection dynamics and disease risks. To determine Salmonella epidemiology in ibis nestlings, 2 studies were conducted. First, 24 free-living ibis chicks were captured for an experimental infection trial to evaluate susceptibility and clinical outcome. Most (58%) were shedding Salmonella at capture, but prevalence d

Natural medicine can substitute antibiotics in animal husbandry: protective effects and mechanisms of rosewood essential oil against Salmonella infection.

Aniba rosaeodora essential oil (RO) has been traditionally used in natural medicine as a substitute for antibiotics due to its notable antidepressant and antibacterial properties. Salmonella, a prevalent pathogen in foodborne illnesses, presents a major challenge to current antibiotic treatments. However, the antibacterial efficacy and mechanisms of action of RO against Salmonella spp. remain underexplored. This study aims to elucidate the chemical composition of RO, evaluate its antibacterial activity and mechanisms against Salmonella in vitro, and further delineate its anti-inflammatory mech

Evaluation of the Protective Immune Response Induced by an rfbG-Deficient Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis Strain as a Live Attenuated DIVA (Differentiation of Infected and Vaccinated Animals) Vaccine in Chickens.

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis), one of the zoonotic pathogens, not only results in significant financial losses for the global poultry industry but also has the potential to spread to humans through poultry and poultry products. Vaccination is an effective method to prevent Salmonella infections. In this study, we constructed a live attenuated DIVA (differentiation of infected and vaccinated animals) vaccine candidate, Z11ΔrfbG, and evaluated its protective effectiveness and DIVA potential in chickens. Compared to that of the virulent wild-type strain, the 50% lethal

Salmonella in Swine: Prevalence, Multidrug Resistance, and Vaccination Strategies.

An estimated 1.3 million Salmonella infections and 420 deaths occur annually in the United States, with an estimated economic burden of $3.7 billion. More than 50% of US swine operations test positive for Salmonella according to the National Animal Health Monitoring System, and 20% of Salmonella from swine are multidrug resistant (resistant to ≥3 antimicrobial classes) as reported by the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System. This review on Salmonella in swine addresses the current status of these topics by discussing antimicrobial resistance and metal tolerance in Salmonella and

Analysis of Salmonella enterica Adhesion to Leaves of Corn Salad or Lettuce.

Human infections by gastrointestinal bacterial pathogens are commonly associated with the consumption of contaminated food of animal origin (e.g., chicken, fish, eggs) or contaminated water. However, further contamination sources must be considered since number of Salmonella enterica infections associated with the consumption of food of non-animal origin (e.g., vegetables, fruits, nuts) are increasing. This gives raise to interest in understanding the interaction of S. enterica with leafy produce, such as various salads. Especially adhesion as initial step of contamination of salad by S. enter
