The results of 107 pairwise examinations of joint segregation of biochemical and skin color loci in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, are presented. Three examinations revealed significant nonrandom assortment: Idh-3 with Me-2, Ada-1 with G3p-3, and Mdh-3, with Mdh-4. We believe the first two instances to be cases of classical linkage and the latter instance to reflect pseudolinkage based on similar findings in Salvelinus. All known salmonid linkage associations are reviewed. The results of this summary indicate a high degree of genome conservatism among genera within the Salmonidae, which would

The chromaffin cells of the adrenal homologue of Salmo gairdneri R. have been studied by light and electron microscopy. The chromaffin tissue was localised in the head kidney adjacent to the wall of the proximal part of the cardinal veins and their main branches. Specific histochemical techniques failed to demonstrate different types of chromaffin cells. With the electron microscope two different types of chromaffin cells were observed. The first type, characterised by numerous dense cytoplasmic granules of average diameter 90 nm, was interpreted as a noradrenalin cell; the second type was cha

The ontogenetic development of caudal vertebrae and associated skeletal elements of salmonids provides information about sequence of ossification and origin of bones that can be considered as a model for other teleosts. The ossification of elements forming the caudal skeleton follows the same sequence, independent of size and age at first appearance. Dermal bones like principal caudal rays ossify earlier than chondral bones; among dermal bones, the middle principal caudal rays ossify before the ventral and dorsal ones. Among chondral bones, the ventral hypural 1 and parhypural ossify first, fo

The evolutionary potential of natural populations to adapt to anthropogenic threats critically depends on whether there exists additive genetic variation for tolerance to the threat. A major problem for water-dwelling organisms is chemical pollution, and among the most common pollutants is 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), the synthetic estrogen that is used in oral contraceptives and that can affect fish at various developmental stages, including embryogenesis. We tested whether there is variation in the tolerance to EE2 within Alpine whitefish. We sampled spawners from two species of different lak

The abundance of parasites of public health significance in pen-reared salmon and wild-caught salmon was compared. Two hundred eighty-seven salmon from Puget Sound, Washington, were examined for third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex. Of these fish, 237 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) were reared in commercial salmon pens and 50 sockeye salmon (O. nerka) were caught during their spawning migration. All wild-caught salmon were found to be infected with larval A. simplex; conversely, all pen-reared fishes lacked such infection

Global warming and environmental pollution trigger the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) opportunistic pathogens in the aquatic microflora. This study aimed to determine the characterization and AMR profile of the opportunistic pathogen Kocuria rhizophila isolated from the tissues of Salmo munzuricus (Munzur trout), an endemic species. Samples collected from the Munzur River were identified using morphological and molecular (16S rDNA) methods; bacterial isolates were characterized by MALDI-TOF and sequencing. The resistance status against 11 different antibiotics was analyzed with the

Hybridization and introgression are very common among freshwater fishes due to the dynamic nature of hydrological landscapes. Cyclic patterns of allopatry and secondary contact provide numerous opportunities for interspecific gene flow, which can lead to discordant paths of evolution for mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. Here, we used double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) to obtain a genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) dataset comprehensive for allThymallus (Salmonidae)species to infer phylogenetic relationships and evaluate potential recent and hist

This study aimed to examine the ultrastructure of spermatogenic stages and mature spermatozoa in the European grayling, Thymallus thymallus. The testes were examined microscopically with a transmission electron microscope to find out details of the structure and morphology of the grayling germ cells, spermatozoa and some somatic cells. The grayling testis has a tubular shape, with cysts or clusters of germ cells within seminiferous lobules. The spermatogenic cells, including spermatogonia, spermatocytes, and spermatids, can be found along seminiferous tubules. There are electron-dense bodies i

Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the scolex morphology of 3 morphotypes of metacestodes of the order Phyllobothriidea (Cestoda) from the spiral intestine of the North Sea rabbitfish Chimaera monstrosa and the intestine and gall bladder of the pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha. Transmission electron microscopy allowed a detailed examination of the ultrastructure of the tegument, unicellular gland cells, muscle cells, and calcareous corpuscles of metacestodes of different sizes from chimaeras. Based on our morphological data, we propose that the studied intestinal metacestodes fro

The tongue-bite apparatus (TBA) of salmonids represents an impressive novel feeding mechanism. The TBA consists of a set of well-developed teeth on the dorsal surface of the anterior hyoid (basihyal) and an opposing set of teeth on the roof of the mouth (vomer). A kinematic analysis of behaviors associated with the TBA in the brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis was performed using high-speed video (250 frames s(-1)). Two distinct behaviors were identified, raking and open-mouth chewing. Univariate analysis demonstrated that these behaviors were significantly different from one another. The power

Hematology is a simple but reliable method to determine the influence of environmental stressors on the physiology and performance of teleost fish. Understanding the detailed impacts of elevated temperature on the hematology of fish can help us to evaluate fish responses to climate change. Therefore, cellular and biochemical changes in peripheral blood were investigated in diploid (2n) and triploid (3n) brook trout and in 2n rainbow trout exposed to 20 °C for 32 days in comparison to fish acclimated to 9 °C. Additionally, survival and growth rates and the relative mRNA expression of heat-shock

Bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD), caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, results in significant losses among multiple salmonid (family Salmonidae) species. Molecular epidemiology and serotyping studies have suggested that some variants are host specific; however, these associations have not been evaluated by cross-challenging fish species with putatively host-associated F. psychrophilum isolates via more natural (i.e. immersion) exposure routes. To this end, F. psychrophilum isolates US19-COS, US62-ATS and US87-RBT, each originally recovered from diseased coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch),

Furunculosis, which is caused by Aeromonas salmonicida, can induce septicemia, leading to the rapid death of fishes belonging to Salmonidae, Cyprinidae, and Fuscheridae, and lamprey. Targeting A. salmonicida, five DNAzyme sequences with the highest enrichment rates were selected through the Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX). The enrichment rates were 34.78, 23.60, 8.91, 2.89, and 2.34%, respectively. The DNAzyme with the highest activity, named D-AS-2, showed specificity and sensitivity. D-AS-2 was combined with carboxyl-functionalized graphene to construct a bi

Organisms use changes in photoperiod for seasonal reproduction to maximize the survival of their offspring. Birds have sophisticated seasonal mechanisms and are therefore excellent models for studying these phenomena. Birds perceive light via deep-brain photoreceptors and long day-induced thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, thyrotropin) in the pars tuberalis of the pituitary gland (PT), which cause local thyroid hormone activation within the mediobasal hypothalamus. The local bioactive thyroid hormone controls seasonal gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion and subsequent gonadotropin secretio

This paper describes for the first time various forms of conjoined twins in the common whitefish Coregonus maraena originating from the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. The occurrence of conjoined twins was observed during the hatching of whitefish under controlled conditions. Two types of twins were identified: symmetric (parapagus) and asymmetric (parasitic form). The percentage of conjoined twins among the whitefish did not exceed 0.01% of the hatched larvae. The forms of twins observed in this study were similar to conjoined twins occurring among humans. One main type, parapagus, was ide

Animals make use of changes in photoperiod to adapt their physiology to the forthcoming breeding season. Comparative studies have contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms of seasonal reproduction in vertebrates. Birds are excellent models for studying these phenomena because of their rapid and dramatic responses to changes in photoperiod. Deep brain photoreceptors in birds perceive and transmit light information to the pars tuberalis (PT) in the pituitary gland, where the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced. This PT-TSH locally increases the level of the bioactive thyroid h

Tapeworms of the genus Proteocephalus Weinland, 1858 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) are common and widespread intestinal parasites of whitefish (Coregonus spp., Salmonidae: Coregoninae). Previous taxonomic studies, based solely on morphology and inconsistently fixed specimens, concluded that all salmoniform fish, including whitefish, are parasitised by a single euryxenous and highly polymorphic species, Proteocephalus longicollis (Zeder, 1800). However, recent molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed the existence of several species specific to individual genera or even species of salmonifor

Host tissues represent diverse resources or barriers for pathogen replicative fitness. We tested whether viruses in specialist, generalist, and non-specialist interactions replicate differently in local entry tissue (fin), and systemic target tissue (kidney) using infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) and three salmonid fish hosts. Virus tissue replication was host specific, but one feature was shared by specialists and the generalist which was uncommon in the non-specialist interactions: high host entry and replication capacity in the local tissue after contact. Moreover, specialists
