Plastome variation and phylogenetic relationships of Salsola species in China.

The genus Salsola (Amaranthaceae) comprises approximately 130 species distributed across Asia, Africa, and Europe, many of which possess important medicinal, horticultural, and ecological significance. Known for its remarkable ecological plasticity, Salsola species thrive in arid, semi-arid, and saline-alkaline environments, serving as key components of desert plant communities. However, extreme environmental pressures have driven convergent evolution, resulting in morphological similarities that obscure phylogenetic relationships. While this structural complexity offers significant horticultu

Evaluation of the halophyte Salsola soda as an alternative crop for saline soils high in selenium and boron.

Urbanization, industrial development, and intensive agriculture have caused soil contamination and land degradation in many areas of the world. Salinization is one important factor contributing to land degradation and it affects agricultural production and environmental quality. When salinization is combined with soil pollution by trace elements, as it occurs in many arid and semi-arid regions around the world, strategies to phyto-manage pollutants and sustain crop production need to be implemented. In this study, we present the case of saline soils in the West side of Central California which

Production of low-molecular weight thiols as a response to cadmium uptake by tumbleweed (Salsola kali).

Tumbleweed (Salsola kali) is a desert plant species that has shown to be a potential Cd hyperaccumulator. In this study, the production of low-molecular weight thiols (LMWT) as a response to cadmium stress was determined in hydroponically grown seedlings exposed to 0, 45, 89, and 178 microM Cd(2+). The treatment of 89 microM Cd(2+) was tested alone and supplemented with an equimolar concentration of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to determine the effect of this chelating agent on Cd uptake and thiols production. After 6 days of growth, the Cd concentration in plant tissues was determin

Bioassay-Guided Isolation and Structure Elucidation of Fungicidal and Herbicidal Compounds from Ambrosia salsola (Asteraceae).

The discovery of potent natural and ecofriendly pesticides is one of the focuses of the agrochemical industry, and plant species are a source of many potentially active compounds. We describe the bioassay-guided isolation of antifungal and phytotoxic compounds from the ethyl acetate extract of Ambrosia salsola twigs and leaves. With this methodology, we isolated and identified twelve compounds (four chalcones, six flavonols and two pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene lactones). Three new chalcones were elucidated as (S)-β-Hydroxy-2',3,4,6'-tetrahydroxy-5-methoxydihydrochalcone (salsolol A), (S)-β-

Tolerance of the eriophyid mite Aceria salsolae to UV-A light and implications for biological control of Russian thistle.

Aceria salsolae (Acari: Eriophyidae) is being evaluated as a candidate biological control agent of Russian thistle (Salsola tragus, Chenopodiaceae), a major invasive weed of rangelands and dryland crops in the western USA. Prior laboratory host range testing under artificial lighting indicated reproduction on non-native Bassia hyssopifolia and on a native plant, Suaeda calceoliformis. However, in field tests in the native range, mite populations released on these 'nontarget' plants remained low. We hypothesized that UV-A light, which can affect behavior of tetranychid mites, would affect popul

Seed Germination Response and Tolerance to Different Abiotic Stresses of Four Salsola Species Growing in an Arid Environment.

Land degradation caused by soil salinization and wind erosion is the major obstruction to sustainable agriculture in the arid region. Salsola species have the potential to prevent land degradation. However, there is limited information about seed germination requirements and tolerance to salinity and drought for representative Salsola species. This study aimed to assess the effects of the winged perianth (seed structural features) and abiotic factors (light, temperature, salinity, and drought) on the seed germination of these species. These Salsola species varied considerably in seed germinati

A recombinant Sal k 1 isoform as an alternative to the polymorphic allergen from Salsola kali pollen for allergy diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Amaranthaceae pollen allergy has increased due to the desertification occurring in many countries. In some regions of Spain, Salsola kali is the main cause of pollinosis, at almost the same level as olive and grass pollen. Sal k 1 - the sensitization marker of S. kali pollinosis - is used in clinical diagnosis, but is purified at a low yield from pollen. We aimed to produce a recombinant (r)Sal k 1 able to span the structural and immunological properties of the natural isoforms from pollen, and validate its potential use for diagnosis. METHODS: Specific cDNA was a
