For decades, salinity research has sought to identify the molecular determinants of salt tolerance by comparing plants under non-saline and saline conditions. This strategy has profoundly advanced our understanding of stress sensing, signalling, and physiological responses. However, the persistent gap between the discovery of salt-responsive genes and the development of crops with improved field performance suggests a need to reconsider how stress responses are interpreted in relation to tolerance. I argue that salinity does not activate a single "tolerance programme". Rather, salt tolerance i

The effect of 'stress' on salt and water balance is largely determined by intrinsic renal factors supported by a series of inter-related neuro-humoral mechanisms which serve to enhance salt and water reabsorption and to maintain arterial pressure. As shown by acute hypovolaemic stress, the hormone response is characterized by increased renin-angiotensin production and associated hyperaldosteronism, which is further augmented by states of Na+ depletion. As well as increasing aldosterone secretion, angiotensin II has a direct renal effect to increase Na+ retention, and may stimulate both thirst

Salt stress severely limits the productivity of crop plants worldwide and its detrimental effects are aggravated by climate change. Due to a significant world population growth, agriculture has expanded to marginal and salinized regions, which usually render low crop yield. In this context, finding methods and strategies to improve plant tolerance against salt stress is of utmost importance to fulfill food security challenges under the scenario of the ever-increasing human population. Plant priming, at different stages of plant development, such as seed or seedling, has gained significant atte

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress limiting rice growth and grain productivity worldwide. Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors serve as central regulators of plant environmental stress responses, yet the biological function and molecular regulatory mechanism of rice OsbZIP60 (LOC_Os07g44950) underlying salinity tolerance remain largely uncharacterized. In this study, we systematically characterized the salt-stress regulatory function of OsbZIP60 in rice. Tissue expression profiling revealed that OsbZIP60 was ubiquitously transcribed across all examined rice tissues, and its e

Salt stress severely limits crop productivity by affecting plant growth and development. Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) shows considerable adaptability to saline environments; however, the molecular basis of root responses to salt stress remains largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological, hormonal, and transcriptional responses of rapeseed roots under salt stress. Salt treatment altered root system architecture by inhibiting hypocotyl elongation and lateral root development while promoting primary root elongation. Targeted hormone metabolomic analysis revealed extensive ch

Soil salinization is a major constraint on global agricultural productivity and food security, largely because excess salts disrupt osmotic balance, nutrient acquisition, ion homeostasis, and redox stability in plants. Halophilic and salt-tolerant microorganisms, including plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, endophytes, and fungi, have emerged as promising biological tools for improving crop performance in saline environments. This review synthesizes current evidence on how these microorganisms mitigate salt stress and promote plant growth across diverse crop systems. The major mechanisms in

Outbreaks of listeriosis caused by the ingestion of Listeria-contaminated ready-to-eat foods have been reported worldwide. Many ready-to-eat foods, such as deli meat products, contain high amounts of salt, which can disrupt the maintenance of osmotic balance within bacterial cells. To understand how Listeria monocytogenes adapts to salt stress, we examined the growth and global gene expression profiles of L. monocytogenes strain F2365 under salt stress using oligonucleotide probe-based DNA array and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analyses. The growth of L. monocytogenes in brain heart in

Hypertension is a risk factor for the development of end-stage renal disease. The mechanisms underlying hypertensive nephropathy are poorly understood. There is evidence, however, that in hypertension there is an accumulation of partially reduced oxygen and its derivatives, known collectively as reactive oxygen species, which may contribute to progressive renal dysfunction. In the present study, we assess the contribution of oxidative stress in the development of salt-dependent hypertensive nephrosclerosis. Going beyond previous end point studies, which inferred renal function either indirectl

BACKGROUND: As an important salt-alkali-tolerant crop, quinoa can respond to salt stress through various pathways. However, the response mechanisms of the rhizosphere microenvironment to salt stress require further exploration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of salt stress on the metabolic profile of quinoa rhizosphere soil and to explore its salt tolerance mechanisms at the metabolic level.
RESULTS: Using Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS)based untargeted metabolomics, combined with multivariate s

Salinity is a major abiotic constraint on plant growth, productivity, and global food security. It disrupts cellular protein homeostasis (proteostasis) at every step, from synthesis to degradation. Plant survival under salt stress therefore depends on the coordinated regulation of protein synthesis, folding, post-translational modification, trafficking, quality control, and turnover. The individual contributions of the nucleus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and Golgi apparatus to salinity responses are increasingly well described, but how these compartments communicate remains far les

Salt stress has become one of the major abiotic stress factors limiting sustainable crop production worldwide, and potato, as the fourth largest food crop globally, is particularly severely affected by saline and other environmental stresses in terms of its growth, development, yield, and quality. StBIN2 belongs to the GSK3 family of proteins, and numerous studies have confirmed that GSK3 family members widely regulate diverse abiotic stress responses and developmental processes in plants. However, the specific function and underlying mechanism of StBIN2 in the salt stress response of potato r

Excess consumption of dietary sodium during pregnancy has been shown to impair offspring cardiovascular function and enhance salt preference in adulthood, but little is known regarding the long-term impact of this nutritional surplus on offspring brain morphology and behavior. Using a combination of cellular and behavioral approaches, we examined the impact of maternal salt intake during the perinatal period on structural plasticity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) in weanling and adult offspring as well as reward- and stress-driven behaviors in adult offspring. We fo

UNLABELLED: Of the 13 serotypes, 4b serotype strains are responsible for the majority of recorded invasive listeriosis outbreaks, although some recent listeriosis outbreaks have been attributed to strains of serotypes 1/2a and 1/2b. Virulence and response to osmotic stress in 41 Listeria monocytogenes strains representing serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b was investigated. It was found that serotype 4b and 1/2b strains exhibited highest invasion efficiency and formed largest plaques in HT-29 cell monolayer. Invasiveness in response to 10-min exposure to 0·3 mol l⁻¹ NaCl was the highest in serotype 4

Infection with Aspergillus fumigatus polymycovirus 1 (AfuPmV-1) weakens the resistance of biofilms of common A. fumigatus reference strain Af293 in intermicrobial competition with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and sensitizes A. fumigatus for antifungal effects of nikkomycin Z. We compared the sensitivity of two virus-infected (VI) and one virus-free (VF) Af293 strains to hypertonic salt. Salt stress impairs the growth of VI and VF at all times; VF control growth always exceeds VI, and VF growth in salt always exceeds VI. Since VF growth exceeds VI in the presence and absence of salt, we also examine

Transcriptomic analysis was conducted in leaves of Arabidopsis T-DNA insertion ERF109-knocked out (KO) mutant or plants overexpressing (OE) the gene to detect its role in driving expression of programmed cell death- (PCD-) or growth-related genes under high salt (200 mM NaCl) stress. The analysis yielded ~22-24 million reads, of which 90% mapped to the Arabidopsis reference nuclear genome. Hierarchical cluster analysis of gene expression and principal component analysis (PCA) successfully separated transcriptomes of the two stress time points. Analysis indicated the occurrence of 65 clusters o

BACKGROUND: Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonists attenuate renal injury in salt-sensitive hypertensive rats with low plasma aldosterone levels. We hypothesized that oxidative stress causes MR activation in high-salt-fed Dahl salt-sensitive rats. Furthermore, we determined if MR activation persisted and induced renal injury, even after switching from a high- to a normal-salt diet.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: High-salt feeding for 4 weeks increased dihydroethidium fluorescence (DHE, an oxidant production marker), p22phox (a NADPH oxidase subunit) and serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase-1

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is involved in the regulation of plant salt stress as a potential signaling molecule. This work investigated the effect of H2S on cucumber growth, photosynthesis, antioxidation, ion balance, and other salt tolerance pathways. The plant height, stem diameter, leaf area and photosynthesis of cucumber seedlings were significantly inhibited by 50 mmol·L-1 NaCl. Moreover, NaCl treatment induced superoxide anion (O2·-) and Na+ accumulation and affected the absorption of other mineral ions. On the contrary, exogenous spraying of 200 μmol·L-1 sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) maintaine

Ni-based structural alloys in molten salt environments often experience simultaneous mechanical loading and corrosive attack, yet the mechanisms governing stress-corrosion interactions remain unclear. Prior studies largely emphasize tensile stress, while the role of compressive stress has received limited attention. Here, reactive molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the coupled effects of applied strain and corrosion in Ni0.75Cr0.25 exposed to molten FLiNaK at 800 °C. A Σ5(210) grain boundary model is subjected to tensile (+4%) to compressive (-4%) uniaxial strains, and corr

Understanding how bacteria respond to complex environmental stresses is essential for addressing antibiotic resistance. In the natural environment, bacteria can experience salt stress, for instance, due to spontaneous water evaporation. Here, we present a microfluidic platform that enables long-term culture of Mycobacterium smegmatis, a fast-growing, non-pathogenic model for mycobacteria. Using a microfluidic gradient generator, we established stable salt and antibiotic concentration profiles across growth chambers and monitored bacterial proliferation over multiple generations. When exposed t

Salinity compromises seed germination and early seedling growth, highlighting the need to identify tolerant cultivars and effective management strategies. This study aimed to evaluate tolerance to salt stress, antioxidant activity, and the effectiveness of seed-applied stress attenuators in pumpkin cultivars. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, six cultivars (Tetsukabuto, Soberana, Kin, Bahiana Tropical, Sergipana, and Adele) were subjected to three levels of osmotic potential induced by NaCl (0.0, -0.2, and -0.4 MPa). Germination, growth, and biochemical variables we
