Dark septate endophytes (DSEs) can improve plant adaptation to saline environments, but their strain-specific role in salt-secreting woody halophytes remains unclear. In this study, three DSE strains, Paraphaeosphaeria hydei (Ph), Chaetomium cervicicola (Cc) and Curvularia platzii (Cp), were inoculated into Tamarix ramosissima seedlings under four NaCl concentrations. The growth, root architecture, Na⁺ accumulation and secretion, oxidative injury, antioxidant enzyme activities, osmotic adjustment, water status, chlorophyll fluorescence, pigment contents and anatomical traits were systematicall

The tall wheatgrass Thinopyrum ponticum has excellent saline-alkali tolerance and great potential for restoring saline-alkali land to enhance productivity. This study used the Thinopyrum ponticum cv. "Orbit" variety, which is widely planted in saline-alkali pastures, as the material and artificially simulated salt stress using 150 mM NaCl and 150 mM Na2SO4, respectively. The growth and physiological indexes of the leaves and roots of seedlings were measured after various treatment durations, and the transcriptomes of untreated and Na2SO4-treated leaves and roots were also analyzed after 24 h o

Soil salinization poses a significant challenge to soybean production, yet the regulatory mechanisms underlying root responses to salt stress remain incompletely understood. In this study, we analyzed the expression patterns, subcellular localization, and functions of overexpressed GmJAZ5 in soybean roots. Under salt stress, GmJAZ5 expression was consistently downregulated in leaves, whereas roots exhibited initial suppression followed by a recovery phase. The GmJAZ5 protein was localized to the nucleus. GmJAZ5 overexpression markedly attenuated salt-induced growth inhibition and enhanced the

Salt stress severely limits the productivity of crop plants worldwide and its detrimental effects are aggravated by climate change. Due to a significant world population growth, agriculture has expanded to marginal and salinized regions, which usually render low crop yield. In this context, finding methods and strategies to improve plant tolerance against salt stress is of utmost importance to fulfill food security challenges under the scenario of the ever-increasing human population. Plant priming, at different stages of plant development, such as seed or seedling, has gained significant atte

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress limiting rice growth and grain productivity worldwide. Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors serve as central regulators of plant environmental stress responses, yet the biological function and molecular regulatory mechanism of rice OsbZIP60 (LOC_Os07g44950) underlying salinity tolerance remain largely uncharacterized. In this study, we systematically characterized the salt-stress regulatory function of OsbZIP60 in rice. Tissue expression profiling revealed that OsbZIP60 was ubiquitously transcribed across all examined rice tissues, and its e

PREMISE: Surviving the effects of oceanic salt spray is critical for plants in coastal ecosystems, yet the mechanisms of coastal plant resilience to salt spray are not well understood. We investigated mechanisms of salt spray adaptation by comparing five latitudinal pairs of yellow monkeyflower accessions locally adapted to coastal and inland habitats.
METHODS: We measured sodium levels in coastal and inland leaves exposed to experimental salt spray in the laboratory and compared leaf surface traits that may contribute to differences in sodium uptake between ecotypes. We assayed tissue tolera

Salt stress severely limits crop productivity by affecting plant growth and development. Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) shows considerable adaptability to saline environments; however, the molecular basis of root responses to salt stress remains largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological, hormonal, and transcriptional responses of rapeseed roots under salt stress. Salt treatment altered root system architecture by inhibiting hypocotyl elongation and lateral root development while promoting primary root elongation. Targeted hormone metabolomic analysis revealed extensive ch

Salt stress has become one of the major abiotic stress factors limiting sustainable crop production worldwide, and potato, as the fourth largest food crop globally, is particularly severely affected by saline and other environmental stresses in terms of its growth, development, yield, and quality. StBIN2 belongs to the GSK3 family of proteins, and numerous studies have confirmed that GSK3 family members widely regulate diverse abiotic stress responses and developmental processes in plants. However, the specific function and underlying mechanism of StBIN2 in the salt stress response of potato r

Plasmodesmata (PD)-mediated intercellular communication is critical for plant stress adaptation, yet its dynamic regulation by the actin cytoskeleton under abiotic stress remains poorly characterised. Here, we show that rice OsFH14 modulates salt-induced PD permeability to enhance salt tolerance. Through CRISPR-Cas9 mutagenesis and subcellular localisation analyses, we first demonstrate that OsFH14 specifically localises to PD and is strictly required for salt stress-induced increases in PD permeability. Osfh14 mutants exhibit reduced PD permeability and enhanced sensitivity to NaCl treatment.

Comparative evidence across halophyte species reveals distinct B tolerance and accumulation strategies, supporting their targeted selection for phytoremediation and advancing the understanding of salinity-associated B resilience. High boron (B) stress has become a critical environmental concern, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. It poses a crucial threat to agricultural productivity. The remediation of B-contaminated soils is an urgent scientific challenge that necessitates innovative solutions. Halophytes, plants uniquely adapted to thrive in saline environments, have emerged as pro

For decades, salinity research has sought to identify the molecular determinants of salt tolerance by comparing plants under non-saline and saline conditions. This strategy has profoundly advanced our understanding of stress sensing, signalling, and physiological responses. However, the persistent gap between the discovery of salt-responsive genes and the development of crops with improved field performance suggests a need to reconsider how stress responses are interpreted in relation to tolerance. I argue that salinity does not activate a single "tolerance programme". Rather, salt tolerance i

Soil salinization threatens sustainable agriculture by reducing crop growth and yield. Stress priming, in which seedlings experience mild salt treatment followed by recovery before re-exposure, can enhance tolerance, but its molecular basis in legumes is unclear. Here, we used mung bean (Vigna radiata) to compare primed and non-primed plants under subsequent salt stress. Primed plants rapidly accumulated proline, activated antioxidant enzymes, and maintained lower Na⁺/K⁺ ratios at early stages. During intermediate stress, defense- and hormone-related transcripts remained elevated, sustaining p

BACKGROUND: As an important salt-alkali-tolerant crop, quinoa can respond to salt stress through various pathways. However, the response mechanisms of the rhizosphere microenvironment to salt stress require further exploration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of salt stress on the metabolic profile of quinoa rhizosphere soil and to explore its salt tolerance mechanisms at the metabolic level.
RESULTS: Using Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS)based untargeted metabolomics, combined with multivariate s

Vigna luteola, a wild legume species, shows remarkable variation in salinity tolerance across its natural habitats, with coastal populations exhibiting high tolerance and riverbank populations being sensitive. This intraspecific variation provides a valuable system for investigating the genetic basis of salt tolerance. A major QTL for salt tolerance was previously identified by crossing salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive accessions, but the responsible genes remain unknown. In this study, grafting experiments between the two accessions revealed that the root plays a primary role in salt toleranc

Against the background of global climate change, soil salinization has emerged as a major abiotic stressor constraining agroforestry productivity worldwide. Root-recruited microbes enhance plant stress resilience, and host-microbe interactions depend on plant root metabolism. Stress-tolerant plant genotypes exhibit a marked capacity to enrich beneficial root-associated microbes through specialized metabolic responses, thereby facilitating phenotypic plasticity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these plant-microbe interactions remain unclear. In this study, we compared salt toleranc

Salt stress induces ABI5 → ALKBH10B transcription; the demethylase removes m6A from RAP2.6 mRNA, accelerating its decay and attenuating salt-responsive genes, thus linking ABA signaling to reversible m6A control of Arabidopsis salt tolerance. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent internal modification of RNA and plays an important role in regulating RNA metabolism that governs development and environmental adaptation of plants. Here we dissect how the Arabidopsis m6A demethylase ALKBH10B is integrated into abscisic-acid (ABA)-mediated salt-stress signaling. Under salt treatment, loss

Soil salinization is one of the main issues in the worldwide crop cultivation, which causes inhibition of plant growth, even resulting in a severe reduction in crop yield. Our previous study revealed that CaSIZ1, a putative E3 ligase, is required for pepper SUMOylation and contributes to the salt tolerance. Although an interaction between CaSIZ1 and CaABI5 was detected in the nucleus, it remains elusive how the CaSIZ1-CaABI5 interaction is involved in response to salt stress. In this study, CaABI5 was characterized to play an essential role in pepper salt tolerance. CaABI5 could be significant

Soil salinization is a major constraint on wheat production, as seedling-stage stress strongly constrains early growth and potential yield. However, the mechanisms by which the rhizosphere microbiome mediates varietal differences in salt tolerance remain poorly understood. Here, we compared a salt-tolerant wheat cultivar (Jimai60, JM60) and a salt-sensitive cultivar (Guomai301, GM301) grown in saline-alkali soil. Integrating soil physicochemical, enzymatic analyses and 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagenomic sequencing, we investigated rhizosphere microbiome assembly, network structure, and func

Understanding how bacteria respond to complex environmental stresses is essential for addressing antibiotic resistance. In the natural environment, bacteria can experience salt stress, for instance, due to spontaneous water evaporation. Here, we present a microfluidic platform that enables long-term culture of Mycobacterium smegmatis, a fast-growing, non-pathogenic model for mycobacteria. Using a microfluidic gradient generator, we established stable salt and antibiotic concentration profiles across growth chambers and monitored bacterial proliferation over multiple generations. When exposed t

It is mandatory to assess the allergenic potential of genetically modified (GM) crops before their commercialization. Recently, a transgene [Calcineurin B-like (CBL) protein] has been introduced into tobacco plant to make the crop salt resistance. Therefore, it was felt necessary to assess the allergenic potential of the cbl gene product, which was introduced and expressed in Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) plant and compared the allergenic effects with the wild-type (WT) counterpart. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that there was no significant sequence homology with known allergens. Also, no dif
