Samarium Diiodide/Samarium-Mediated Deoxygenative Hydrosilylation of Ketones.

The first deoxygenative hydrosilylation of ketones promoted by samarium diiodide and samarium has been reported. In this approach, secondary alkyl silanes are synthesized from unactivated ketones and chlorosilanes in one step. The carbonyl group of ketones is activated by SmI2-mediated single-electron transfer process, which follows a deoxygenative elimination of O=Sm. Broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance has been demonstrated.

Photochemical strategies in divalent samarium catalysis.

Divalent samarium reagents, particularly samarium diiodide (SmI2), have long been recognized as the most powerful and versatile single-electron reductants in organic synthesis. Several catalytic strategies have been developed for Sm(II) chemistry over the past three decades, including approaches based on metal co-reductants, electrochemical reduction, and radical relay mechanisms. Photochemical strategies have recently emerged as new platforms for catalytic Sm(II) chemistry, leading to the development of a broad range of reductive transformations. This review highlights the recent progress in

Selective reductive transformations using samarium diiodide-water.

Samarium diiodide (SmI(2)) is one of the most important reductive electron transfer reagents available in the laboratory. Key to the popularity of SmI(2) is the ability of additives and co-solvents to tune the properties of the reagent. Over the last decade water has emerged as a particularly valuable additive, opening up new chemical space and leading to the discovery of unprecedented selectivity and new reactions promoted by SmI(2). In this Feature Article we review recent progress in the application of SmI(2)-H(2)O systems, with an emphasis on mechanistic considerations and the development

Synthesis of Nitrogen Heterocycles Using Samarium(II) Iodide.

Nitrogen heterocycles represent vital structural motifs in biologically-active natural products and pharmaceuticals. As a result, the development of new, convenient and more efficient processes to N-heterocycles is of great interest to synthetic chemists. Samarium(II) iodide (SmI₂, Kagan's reagent) has been widely used to forge challenging C-C bonds through reductive coupling reactions. Historically, the use of SmI₂ in organic synthesis has been focused on the construction of carbocycles and oxygen-containing motifs. Recently, significant advances have taken place in the use of SmI₂ for the sy

Preparation and pharmacokinetics of samarium(III)-153-labeled DTPA-bis-biotin. Characterization and theoretical studies of the samarium(III)-152 conjugate.

The complex(153)Sm(III)DTPA-bis-biotin was prepared with a 99% radiochemical purity and a specific activity of 370 MBq/mg employing a molar ratio of DTPA-bis-biotin/Sm from 2 to 4 at pH 8.0. In vitro studies demonstrated that the complex is stable after dilution in saline and in human serum. Avidity of labeled biotin for avidin was not affected by the labeling procedure. Pharmacokinetic data of (153)Sm(III)DTPA-bis-biotin in normal mice showed that blood clearance is biexponential during the time interval from 0 to 24 h and that 3 h postinjection 92 +/- 4.32% of the dose is eliminated in the u

Toxicological and pharmacological effects of gadolinium and samarium chlorides.

A study has been made of the toxicology and pharmacology of gadolinium and samarium chlorides. The symptoms of acute toxicity following intraperitoneal injection are described. The chronic oral ingestion of both chemicals for 12 weeks produced no effects on growth or the blood picture, and only the male rats receiving gadolinium chloride showed liver damage. The pharmacological responses to both chemicals were mainly depressant on all systems studied, and death was associated with cardiovascular collapse coupled with respiratory paralysis. The greatest damage seen was on abraded skin, where no

Visible-Light-Antenna Ligand-Enabled Samarium-Catalyzed Reductive Transformations.

Although divalent Sm reagents are some of the most important single-electron transfer reagents for reductive transformations, their catalytic applications are challenging. In this study, a bidentate phosphine oxide ligand substituted with 9,10-diphenylanthracene as a visible-light antenna was designed for Sm-catalyzed reduction reactions under mild reaction conditions. Pinacol coupling of aryl ketones and aldehydes was developed with 1 mol % of Sm catalyst and organic amine (DIPEA) as a sacrificial mild reductant. Mechanistic studies suggest that the visible-light-antenna ligand coordinates to

Reductive samarium (electro)catalysis enabled by SmIII-alkoxide protonolysis.

Samarium diiodide (SmI2) is a privileged, single-electron reductant deployed in diverse synthetic settings. However, generalizable methods for catalytic turnover remain elusive because of the well-known challenge associated with cleaving strong SmIII-O bonds. Prior efforts have focused on the use of highly reactive oxophiles to enable catalyst turnover. However, such approaches give rise to complex catalyst speciation and intrinsically limit the synthetic scope. Herein, we leveraged a mild and selective protonolysis strategy to achieve samarium-catalyzed, intermolecular reductive cross-couplin

Cerium- and samarium-nitrate interaction and accumulation on human dentin.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the accumulation of cerium-nitrate and samarium-nitrate on dentin without or with smear-layer and to test their antibacterial activity. DESIGN: 24 dentin-enamel slices were cut from 24 extracted molars. 12 slices underwent smear-layer creation (320 grit, 200 g, 5 s), the other 12 smear-layer removal (20 % EDTA, 300 s). Slices were halved to 48 semilunar-shaped specimens. One specimen per tooth was treated with either Ce(NO3)3 (50 wt% aqueous solution; pH = 1.29; n = 6) or Sm(NO3)3 (50 wt% aqueous solution; pH = 1.88; n = 6). The other specimen served as control (A. d

Synthesis and theoretical analysis of samarium nanoparticles: perspectives in nuclear medicine.

The use of lanthanides as radionuclides in nuclear medicine is well-known, because they can be used for detecting and treating cancerous tumors. Due to the fact that the doses are directly related to the number of unstable atoms involved, the possibility of obtaining controlled-size lanthanide nanoparticles opens a wide scope for their application in nuclear medicine. In this work, we report the synthesis of anew samarium nanoparticle by using the bioreduction method, where the pH conditions play an important role in the size control of the produced clusters. The nanoparticles were characteriz

Ab initio investigations of circularly polarised luminescence in Samarium(III)-based complexes.

The present study aims to gain insight into the circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) of lanthanide complexes through the angle of one of their elements, namely Samarium. The simulation of luminescent properties of Samarium(III) complexes remains a challenge for computational chemistry, considering the multiconfigurational character of the electronic structure, the importance of the spin-orbit coupling and the fact that its emissive level is high in energy and preceded by numerous states of various multiplicity. Herein, a methodology based on CASSCF/RASSI-SO calculations is exposed and appli

Visible and near-infrared emission by samarium(III)-containing ionic liquid mixtures.

Highly luminescent anionic samarium(III) beta-diketonate and dipicolinate complexes were dissolved in the imidazolium ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(6)mim][Tf(2)N]. The solubility of the complexes in the ionic liquid was ensured by a careful choice of the countercation of the samarium(III) complex. The samarium(III) complexes that were considered are [C(6)mim][Sm(tta)(4)], where tta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate; [C(6)mim][Sm(nta)(4)], where nta is 2-naphthoyltrifluoroacetonate; [C(6)mim][Sm(hfa)(4)], where hfa is hexafluoroacetylacetonate; and
