Experimental study on the sand discharge characteristics of a swirling sand dredging device in a reservoir area with multiple mud and sand rivers.

Reservoir sedimentation is a globalized challenge. Existing methods for reservoir desilting have certain limitations and often fail to meet the requirements for sand discharge fully. To address this issue, a swirling sediment dredging device has been developed. Through hydraulic model testing, the characteristics of sand removal, erosion, and deposition patterns were examined under various conditions, including flow velocity, water depth, sand depth, and sand gradation. The experimental results demonstrated that the sand discharge efficiency of the swirling device varies significantly with san

The "sand watch" mandible.

The lingual surface of the mandible's body is commonly indicated as presenting the submandibular and sublingual fossae, which are separated by the mylohyoid line. The mylohyoid line attaches to the mylohyoid muscle (MM). Less attention has been paid to the 'mylohyoid boutonnières', which allow the 'sublingual buttons' to pass through the mylohyoid muscle in the submandibular space. The cone-beam computed tomography files of patients were routinely examined for anatomical studies. Two cases were found with unexpected morphologies of the mandible's body - the mylohyoid lines were incomplete ante

Developing natural based biodegradable sand barriers for mitigation of aeolian sands.

Wind erosion sediments pose significant environmental challenges, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Over recent decades, various methods have been developed to stabilize sand dunes. Current research emphasizes wind profile assessment for sand stabilization, focusing on material properties, ease of implementation, and sand tarping potential. This study evaluated biodegradable materials based on indices such as sand prevention efficiency, sand flux, concave surface development, and erosion-deposition rates in central Iran's arid environment. Measurements were conducted over a year using

Physiology and the future of animals in shifting-sand deserts: living, moving and thermoregulating in the sand.

The conservation of the animals of the shifting-sand deserts requires a thorough understanding of the physiological mechanisms that not only enable them to function in the desert, but also may buffer them against future change. The animals there contend with little water and poor food resources. The animals of shifting-sand deserts also must move on and in loose sand and cannot construct unsupported burrows. Most are invertebrates, but the deserts also are home to many vertebrate species, mainly lizards. We describe the biomechanics of their locomotion on and in the sand. Some are quiescent bu

What's eating you? sand flies.

As thousands of Americans descended upon Brazil for the Olympic games in the summer of 2016, the mosquito-borne Zika virus became a source of great concern among the countless athletes and travelers in Rio. As is often the case, the media frenzy that ensued drew travelers' attention away from a lesser known flying vector that often carries with it grave consequences. The Phlebotominae, commonly known as sand flies, are biting insects known for their ability to transmit the protozoa Leishmania as well as a number of other viruses and bacteria. As the impact of sand flies continues to grow in th

Sand hazards on tourist beaches.

Visiting the beach is a popular tourist activity worldwide. Unfortunately, the beach environment is abundant with hazards and potential danger to the unsuspecting tourist. While the traditional focus of beach safety has been water safety oriented, there is growing concern about the risks posed by the sand environment on beaches. This study reports on the death and near death experience of eight tourists in the collapse of sand holes, sand dunes, and sand tunnels. Each incident occurred suddenly and the complete burial in sand directly contributed to the victims injury or death in each case rep

Wormlions prefer both fine and deep sand but only deep sand leads to better performance.

Wormlions are small fly larvae that dig pits in loose soil to trap their prey. Similar to other trap-building predators, like spiders and antlions, they depend on the habitat structure for successful trap construction and prey catch. We examined whether sites at which wormlions are present differ in sand depth and particle size from nearby sites, at which wormlions are absent. Next, in the laboratory we manipulated both sand depth and type (fine vs. coarse) to determine their joint effect on microhabitat preference, the size of the constructed pit, wormlion movement, and their latency to respo

A systematic review on the use of waste foundry sand as a partial replacement of common sand in mortars.

The scarcity of natural resources worldwide has encouraged the reuse of industrial waste in cementitious materials. In this context, waste foundry sand (WFS) is a promising material for replacing common sand (CS) in non-structural mortars. This study reviews the literature on mortars containing WFS through a structured search and selection process. The review evaluates the mechanical properties of mortars considering WFS characteristics, mix proportions, specimen geometry, and workability conditions, while also discussing sustainability, circular economy benefits, and potential environmental r

Ulcerative Colitis: Shifting Sands.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease associated with considerable disease burden. We review some current misconceptions about UC in adults with the aim of optimizing care for patients. Although UC and Crohn's disease (CD) are considered discrete diseases, distinctions between them are not always clear-cut and phenotypes may change over time. Patient management should take into account disease manifestations, disease severity and extent, and response to prior treatments. Although disease extent often defines severity, distal UC is not always less disabling than extens

Fatal outcome of a sand aspiration.

Although extensive deep aspiration of sand, gravel, or dirt is a very rare incident, its consequences may be severe ranging from the necessity of immediate intensive care to death. Cases reported so far were due to external causes such as cave-ins, near drowning, or being buried under sand masses. We report a case of a 2 1/2-year-old boy who ingested sand while playing in a sandbox with his older brother. Despite early resuscitation and endotracheal intubation efforts, he died subsequently showing clinical signs of asphyxia due to airway obstruction. Autopsy revealed sand masses obstructing th

Sanded nuclei in delta patients.

Sanded nuclei are nuclei with eosinophilic inclusions identified by light microscopy in cases of chronic hepatitis B virus infection. In hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections, these inclusions have an almost homogeneous, finely granular texture giving a sandy appearance. They have been related to excess hepatitis B core antigen formation. We have studied liver biopsies from two HBsAg positive immunosuppressed patients with numerous sanded nuclei, morphologically identical to those previously described in hepatitis B. Immunohistochemically, sanded nuclei showed a strong nuclear positivity for

Environmental Impact of the Reclaimed Sand Addition to Molding Sand with Furan and Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin-A Comparison.

Increasingly strict regulations, as well as an increased public awareness, are forcing industry, including the foundry industry, to develop new binders for molding sands, which, while being more environmentally friendly, would simultaneously ensure a high quality of castings. Until recently, binders based on synthetic resins were considered to be such binders. However, more accurate investigations indicated that such molding sands subjected to high temperatures of liquid metal generated several harmful, even dangerous substances (carcinogenic and/or mutagenic) from the benzene, toluene, ethylb

Pharmacotherapy for social anxiety disorder (SAnD).

BACKGROUND: Recognition is growing that social anxiety disorder (SAnD) is a chronic and disabling disorder, and data from early trials demonstrate that medication may be effective in its treatment. This systematic review is an update of an earlier review of pharmacotherapy of SAnD. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of pharmacotherapy for social anxiety disorder in adults and identify which factors (methodological or clinical) predict response to treatment. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Common Mental Disorders Controlled Trials Register (CCMDCTR-Studies and CCMDCTR-References) to 1

Accidental fatal asphyxiation by sand inhalation.

A 36 year old laborer was pronounced dead by the casualty doctor on arrival to the hospital. To avoid blame, witnesses and fellow workers fabricated a scenario that resulted in the doctor certify death as due to myocardial infarction. The body was then taken to the mortuary of the Department of Forensic Medicine as a routine procedure to furnish a medico-legal report, which is a pre-requisite for bodies to be taken out of the country. No external injuries were found by the authors who noted deposition of sand all over the clothed body of the deceased. Some sand was also seen inside eyes, mouth

[Model experiments on breathing under sand].

Remarkable autopsy findings in persons who had suffocated as a result of closure of the mouth and nose by sand (without the body being buried) induced us to investigate some aspects of this situation by means of a simple experiment. A barrel (diameter 36.7 cm) with a mouthpiece in the bottom was filled with sand to a depth of 15, 30, 60, or 90 cm. The subject tried to breathe as long as possible through the sand, while the amount of sand inspired was measured. Pressure and volume of the breath, as well as the O2 and CO2 content were also measured. A respiratory volume of up to 31 was possible,

Dynamic Disulfide Bond-Functionalized Self-Healing Resin Coatings for Surface Modification of Quartz Sand toward Sand Stabilization.

Coating failure of conventional resin-coated sand under harsh formation conditions can induce formation sand backflow, shorten the service life of sand-control systems, and ultimately impair oil and gas well productivity. In this study, a self-healing epoxy resin with a dynamically reversible disulfide-bond network was synthesized and applied as a surface coating to prepare self-healing resin-coated sand for fracture-packing sand control. The self-healing epoxy resin exhibits excellent self-healing capability, achieving up to 86.15% healing efficiency within the temperature range of 80-100 °C.

Depth and distribution of colonic sand accumulation in a desert population of horses and its association with diagnosis of sand colic.

OBJECTIVE: To describe patient and management characteristics associated with radiographic sand accumulation in a desert population of horses, as well as identify factors independently associated with a diagnosis of sand colic and need for surgical intervention. METHODS: Horses were prospectively allocated into 3 groups: control horses, horses with sand colic, and horses with non-sand-associated colic. Signalment, radiographs, and management outcomes were compared between groups. RESULTS: Median depth of sand was significantly greater in horses diagnosed with sand colic compared to other gro

Determination of sand fly fauna and molecular detection of Leishmania in sand flies in Antalya Province, Southern Turkey.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) are diseases transmitted by infected female sand flies. Since the eradication of malaria in Turkey, CL is the main vector-borne disease in the country, with more than 2000 cases per year, making it a significant public health problem. The aims of this study were to carry out an entomological survey in Antalya Province, an endemic area for CL in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey, to identify sand fly fauna and to screen female specimens for the presence of Leishmania parasites (Leishmania infantum, L. tropica, L. major, and L. donova
