BACKGROUND: A suture material producing least tissue reaction is considered as ideal. Other characteristics like tensile strength, capacity to sustain sterilization process enhance its acceptability. In the present situation there is a need to reascertain the relevance and utility of these materials. Among the suture materials mentioned by Sushrutacharya, Moorva (Sansevieria roxburghiana) and Shana (Crotalaria pallida) have been showed insignificant tissue reaction in operated cases of inguinal hernia. An experimental study to confirm the extent of tissue reaction in deeper planes is needed be

OBJECTIVES: Capsules are pharmaceutical preparations that are enclosed in hard or soft capsule shells made of gelatin. Because gelatin is typically generated from non-halal materials, there is a need for alternative raw materials for making capsule shells, one of which is carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC), which is synthesized from cellulose.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study aims to find alternative raw materials for the manufacture of capsule shells from cellulose-containing Sansevieria trifasciata leaves. Then, the isolated cellulose was treated with sodium Na-CMC using the alkalization and

The ability of an aqueous extract of the rhizomes of Sansevieria liberica to protect against carbon tetrachloride induced liver injury was investigated in Wistar albino rats. The carbon tetrachloride was prepared 1:5 (v:v) in olive oil, and administered subcutaneously at 1 mL/kg body weight. The extract was administered to both normal and carbon tetrachloride treated rats at 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg. On gas chromatographic analysis of the extract, twenty nine known flavonoids were detected, consisting mainly of 31.94 % apigenin, 20.66 % quercetin, 11.28 % kaempferol, 5.99 % naringenin, 5.83 % (-

Indoor air pollutants comprise both polar and non-polar volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Indoor potted plants are well known for their innate ability to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) by detoxification of indoor air pollutants. In this study, a combination of two different plant species comprising a C3 plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) and a crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) was used to remove polar and non-polar VOCs and minimize CO2 emission from the chamber. Z. zamiifolia and S. trifasciata, when combined, were able to remove more than 95% of pollutants wit

INTRODUCTION: Adequate closure of the surgical wound is one of the most important aspects of surgery; improper suturing techniques or improper suturing materials sometimes compromise the success of surgery. Many synthetic materials have replaced the natural materials, which were once used for suturing in the ancient era, and Murva is one of them. There are references of Murva (Sansevieria roxburghiana Schult. and Schult.f.) at various contexts of "Sushruta Samhita" where it has been used as a suture material. It is a xerophytic herbaceous plant occurring abundantly in the eastern coastal regio

Plant-based removal of indoor formaldehyde is a widely studied method, yet little is known about the dynamic changes in this process. In this study, potted Sansevieria trifasciata Prain plants were exposed to 5-ppm formaldehyde gas concentration for 7 days. The results showed that formaldehyde exposure led to plant stress, affected photosynthesis, and damaged membrane lipids, as evidenced by a decrease in chlorophyll content, an increase in Chl a/b ratio and malondialdehyde content. However, the formaldehyde removal ability of the plants increased over the first 5 days, peaking at 18.02 mg h-1

Considerable effort has been devoted to analytical determinations of sugar and amino acid constituents of plant nectars, with the primary aim of understanding their ecological roles, yet few studies have reported more exhaustive organic compound inventories of plant nectars or extrafoliar nectars. This work evaluated the efficacy of four solvents (ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, toluene and hexane) to extract the greatest number of organic compound classes and unique compounds from extrafoliar nectar drops produced by Sansevieria spp. Aggregation of the results from each solvent revealed that

Botanical biofilters can effectively remove indoor air pollution. However, to apply botanical biofilters in situ, the distance of botanical biofilter to the pollutants and airflow pattern can be important factors impacting efficiency. This study examined the removal efficiency of particulate matters (PMs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cigarette smoke, such as formaldehyde and acetone, at various distances (100 cm, 175 cm, 240 cm, and 315 cm) using a Sansevieria trifasciata botanical biofilter. The botanical biofilter was placed inside a testing room (24 m3) and exposed to cigarett

Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) occurs due to over-response to androgens causing severe hair loss on the scalp, and requires the development of new and efficient drugs to treat this condition. This study explores and identifies secondary metabolites from Sansevieriatrifasciata Prain using the LC-MS/MS and in-silico method. The inhibitory activity of bioactive compounds from S. trifasciata Prain against androgen receptors (PDB ID: 4K7A) was evaluated molecularly using docking and dynamics studies by comparing their binding energies, interactions, and stability with minoxidil. The results of the LC-

The ability of indoor plants to purify benzene pollution is the basic basis for the selection of plants for ecological remediation of indoor benzene pollution. In this study, the purification rate and the purification amount per unit leaf area of 13 test plants at three benzene concentrations were determined by indoor fumigation experiments, and the benzene absorption and purification abilityability of indoor plants were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that (1) there was a significant correlation between benzene concentration and purification rate and purification amount per unit

Uptake and in-plant transport of formaldehyde by six plants with or without soil microorganisms were investigated. The capabilities of fresh and boiled leaf extracts to dissipate added formaldehyde were also measured to evaluate formaldehyde metabolism in plant tissues. Results show that when the initial formaldehyde level in air was 0.56 ± 0.04 mg·m-3, the removal rate in the plant-only systems varied from 1.91 to 31.8 μg·h-1·g-1 FW (fresh weight). The removal rate of plants in the plant-only systems were ordered as Helianthus annuus Linn > Lycopersicon esculentum Miller > Oryza sativa > Sans
