Gross anatomy of the longitudinal fascicle of Sapajus sp.

Opposing genetic and cultural-social explanations for the origin of language are currently the focus of much discussion. One of the functions linked to the longitudinal fascicle is language, which links Wernicke's area and Broca's area in the brain, and its size should indicate the brain increase in the evolution. Sapajus is a New World primate genus with high cognition and advanced tool use similar to that of chimpanzees. A study of the gross anatomy of the longitudinal fascicle of Sapajus using Kingler's method found it to differ from other studied primates, such as macaques and chimpanzees,

Ontogenetic biomechanics of tufted (Sapajus) and untufted (Cebus) capuchin mandibles.

OBJECTIVES: Cortical bone geometry is commonly used to investigate biomechanical properties of primate mandibles. However, the ontogeny of these properties is less understood. Here we investigate changes in cortical bone cross-sectional properties throughout capuchin ontogeny and compare captive versus wild, semi-provisioned groups. Tufted capuchins (Sapajus spp.) are known to consume relatively hard/tough foods, while untufted capuchins (Cebus spp.) exploit less mechanically challenging foods. Previous research indicates dietary differences are present early in development and adult Sapajus m

Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm in Bacteria from Rehabilitated Sapajus libidinosus.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in natural environments and wildlife is an escalating threat to global health and biodiversity conservation. Neotropical primates of the genus Sapajus may act as reservoirs and ecological sentinels of resistant bacteria. The absence of systematic microbiological screening in wildlife rehabilitation centers, coupled with empirical antimicrobial use, can facilitate resistance spread in vulnerable ecosystems. This study characterized phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles and biofilm-forming ability of Staphylococcus spp. and Mammaliicoccus sciuri isolated fro

Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) prefer larger sooner sequence payouts.

The peak-end effect, in which evaluations of experiences are disproportionately influenced by their most intense, most recent, or final moments, is seen consistently in humans but inconsistently in nonhuman primates. Understanding in what species and contexts these biases appear can help us better understand the evolution of these decision-making biases. Previous evidence in monkeys is contradictory, likely due to differences in experimental procedures. Thus, to assess whether capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) exhibit such biases, we tested 14 individuals in a manual two-item food sequ

First observation of a leucistic bearded capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus).

Leucism, a pigmentation disorder resulting in partial loss of coloration, is rare in neotropical primates. This manuscript presents the first report of a leucistic robust capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus), observed at Ubajara National Park, Brazil. Our findings contribute to the sparse literature on leucism in New World monkeys, emphasizing the importance of long-term studies for monitoring such rare anomalies.

Detection of Mycobacterium bovis in Free-Ranging Sapajus nigritus, Argentina.

Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis are the most relevant among pathogenic mycobacteria, both belonging to the M. tuberculosis complex (MTC). Samples of blood, liver, spleen, kidneys, lungs and caseous tubercles were collected from a free-ranging juvenile black capuchin monkey (Sapajus nigritus) showing non-specific signs of illness. Macroscopic findings included emaciation, a caseous lesion in a tooth and gingiva, disseminated nodules in both lungs and left kidney parenchyma and caseous nodules on the pleura and mesentery. The lesions suggested MTC infection, a diagnosis subseq

Morphological Tools for Describing the Male External Genitalia of Sapajus apella.

Sapajus apella is a wild monkey of South America distributed across almost all of Brazil. This species adapts to domesticated life and reproduces easily. The present study describes the macro- and microscopic morphology of male genital organs (penis, penis bone, glans penis, prepuce, bulb of penis, and urethra) of Sapajus apella. Four male monkeys were used in this study. For macroscopic description, the genitals were dissected, examined and photographed. For microscopic analysis, samples were stained by HE and Tricom Masson and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Th

Bilateral Leydig Cell Tumor in a Capuchin Monkey (Sapajus apella): Case Report.

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) are uncommon in nonhuman primates (NHPs). A bilateral LCT was identified in a 20-year-old male capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella) maintained under human care. Ultrasonography revealed a right testicular nodule, while necropsy identified bilateral testicular masses. Histopathology confirmed bilateral LCT. This case documents bilateral LCT in S. apella, a rare finding in NHPs.

Personality in Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus apella): Comparison of Assessment Methods and Constructs.

Understanding personality in nonhuman primates is critical for advancing theories of individual differences, yet methodological variation remains a major challenge. We examined whether three commonly used approaches-questionnaire ratings, behavioral observations, and experimental tests-capture stable and overlapping personality constructs in 26 captive tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella). Using Bayesian multivariate mixed models, we retained individual variability to assess temporal stability, cross-context consistency, and inter-method convergence. Behavioral observations revealed concep

Spontaneous juggling behavior in a wild urban capuchin monkey (Sapajus nigritus cucullatus).

Juggling, defined as the repeated and rhythmic throwing and catching of an object, is a rare and complex form of object manipulation among non-human animals. While object play has been described in several taxa, true juggling behavior, intentional, successive aerial manipulation of the same object, has only been formally documented in a few species such as otters, dolphins, corvids, and, more recently, in gibbons and macaques. In this study, we report the first known case of juggling behavior in a wild free-ranging Platyrrhini, a juvenile black-horned capuchin monkey (Sapajus nigritus cucullat

Female bearded capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) use objects to solicit the sexual partner.

Female wild bearded capuchins (Sapajus libidinosus) living at Serra da Capivara National Park (SCNP) that use stone and stick tools during foraging occasionally toss or throw stones at the male during courtship. We report similar behaviors in a different population that uses stones as tools in foraging. We video-recorded the sexual behavior of four females (27 days during nine proceptive periods) belonging to a group of wild capuchins living in Fazenda Boa Vista (FBV), 320 km from SCNP. Three females used stones or branches when they solicited the alpha male (79 episodes). The female that did

Morphological and Morphometric Description of Female Reproductive Tract of Sapajus apella (Capuchin monkey).

Forest destruction has progressively hampered the survival of many species, and this is why it is so important to study of the lives of primates in captivity. This study aimed to describe the morphological aspects of the female reproductive tract of Sapajus apella. We used five animals obtained from the National Primate Center, Ananindeua - PA. The ovaries were paired, compact and symmetrical and had a smooth surface. The uterine tubes were bilateral and convoluted in adult animals and straight in young individuals. The uterus was simple and located in the pelvic region. The vagina was a long
