Diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis in a hooded capuchin (Sapajus apella).

Spontaneous endometriosis is common in women, great apes and Old World monkeys, but rare in New World monkeys. We report on the clinical diagnosis and successful combination of surgical and medical treatment in a case of spontaneous endometriosis in a diabetic hooded capuchin. Addressing this painful condition had a positive welfare impact.

Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) prefer larger sooner sequence payouts.

The peak-end effect, in which evaluations of experiences are disproportionately influenced by their most intense, most recent, or final moments, is seen consistently in humans but inconsistently in nonhuman primates. Understanding in what species and contexts these biases appear can help us better understand the evolution of these decision-making biases. Previous evidence in monkeys is contradictory, likely due to differences in experimental procedures. Thus, to assess whether capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) exhibit such biases, we tested 14 individuals in a manual two-item food sequ

Morphological Tools for Describing the Male External Genitalia of Sapajus apella.

Sapajus apella is a wild monkey of South America distributed across almost all of Brazil. This species adapts to domesticated life and reproduces easily. The present study describes the macro- and microscopic morphology of male genital organs (penis, penis bone, glans penis, prepuce, bulb of penis, and urethra) of Sapajus apella. Four male monkeys were used in this study. For macroscopic description, the genitals were dissected, examined and photographed. For microscopic analysis, samples were stained by HE and Tricom Masson and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Th

Clinical and histopathological investigation of symmetrical alopecia with associated chronic pruritus in tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella apella).

BACKGROUND: Symmetrical alopecia is a common symptom of endocrine and autoimmune diseases, which are rarely manifested with pruritus. Increased levels of stress in primates have been presented with increased levels of pruritus and alopecia appearance. METHODS: A pruritic and alopecic disease was investigated in a group of tufted capuchin monkeys (N = 12), but due to ethical reasons, four random animals were further investigated by numerous diagnostic methods. The impact of food and enclosure enrichment was assessed and observed over a 2-year period. RESULTS: Histopathology of four random tuf

Bilateral Leydig Cell Tumor in a Capuchin Monkey (Sapajus apella): Case Report.

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) are uncommon in nonhuman primates (NHPs). A bilateral LCT was identified in a 20-year-old male capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella) maintained under human care. Ultrasonography revealed a right testicular nodule, while necropsy identified bilateral testicular masses. Histopathology confirmed bilateral LCT. This case documents bilateral LCT in S. apella, a rare finding in NHPs.

Personality in Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus apella): Comparison of Assessment Methods and Constructs.

Understanding personality in nonhuman primates is critical for advancing theories of individual differences, yet methodological variation remains a major challenge. We examined whether three commonly used approaches-questionnaire ratings, behavioral observations, and experimental tests-capture stable and overlapping personality constructs in 26 captive tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella). Using Bayesian multivariate mixed models, we retained individual variability to assess temporal stability, cross-context consistency, and inter-method convergence. Behavioral observations revealed concep

Morphological and Morphometric Description of Female Reproductive Tract of Sapajus apella (Capuchin monkey).

Forest destruction has progressively hampered the survival of many species, and this is why it is so important to study of the lives of primates in captivity. This study aimed to describe the morphological aspects of the female reproductive tract of Sapajus apella. We used five animals obtained from the National Primate Center, Ananindeua - PA. The ovaries were paired, compact and symmetrical and had a smooth surface. The uterine tubes were bilateral and convoluted in adult animals and straight in young individuals. The uterus was simple and located in the pelvic region. The vagina was a long

Behavioral and genetic color vision evaluation of an albino male capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella).

Albinism is a rare phenotype that affects the pigmentation in eyes, hair, and skin. The effects of albinism in color vision are still unclear. Our study aimed to evaluate the color vision phenotype and genotype of an albino capuchin monkey. An adult albino male capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella) had the L and M opsin gene analyzed, and was trained in a behavioral task of color discrimination. Color discrimination thresholds were determined along 20 chromatic axes around the background chromaticity. A color discrimination ellipse was drawn by interpolation among these thresholds. The albino monke

A novel nonsense mutation in the tyrosinase gene is related to the albinism in a capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella).

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA) is an autosomal recessive inherited condition that affects the pigmentation of eyes, hair and skin. The OCA phenotype may be caused by mutations in the tyrosinase gene (TYR), which expresses the tyrosinase enzyme and has an important role in the synthesis of melanin pigment. The aim of this study was to identify the genetic mutation responsible for the albinism in a captive capuchin monkey, and to describe the TYR gene of normal phenotype individuals. In addition, we identified the subject's species. RESULTS: A homozygous nonsense mutation was identif

Evaluation of the main disorders and microbiota of the oral cavity of capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) under human care.

BACKGROUND: Although critical to the overall condition of animals under human care, there is still limited information about oral health in neotropical primates. METHODS: We analyzed the main oral conditions and microbiota using mass spectrometry from 13 capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) under human care. The findings were registered on odontograms following the Triadan system. RESULTS: The most prevalent conditions were dental fractures (n = 9), mainly enamel fractures, and periodontal disease (n = 8), mainly grade 1 calculi. When exanimating teeth, alterations were identified in 90 out of

Cranio-Dental Anomalies in Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus spp. and Sapajus apella) From the Northern Andes and Central America.

Morphological variation comprises differences among individuals of the same species, but when such variation is rare or unusual, it is considered an anomaly. We examined 280 adult specimens (208 Cebus spp. and 72 Sapajus apella), finding cranio-dental anomalies in 24.5% of Cebus spp. and 19.4% of Sapajus apella, with higher frequencies in males. The specimens represent 10 species (C. albifrons, C. capucinus, C. cesarae, C. cuscinus, C. imitator, C. leucocephalus, C. malitiosus, C. versicolor, C. yuracus, and S. apella) across eight countries in Central and South America. Grasping primate development: Ontogeny of intrinsic hand and foot proportions in capuchin monkeys (Cebus albifrons and Sapajus apella).

Young primates have relatively large hands and feet for their body size, perhaps enhancing grasping ability. We test the hypothesis that selection for improved grasping ability is responsible for these scaling trends by examining the ontogeny of intrinsic hand and foot proportions in capuchin monkeys (Cebus albifrons and Sapajus apella). If selection for improved grasping ability is responsible for the observed patterns of hand and foot growth in primates, we predicted that fingers and toes would be longer early in life and proportionally decline with age. We measured the lengths of manual and

Is economic risk proneness in young children (Homo sapiens) driven by exploratory behavior? A comparison with capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella).

Economic risk proneness is displayed by human children and some nonhuman primate species. To explore the role of attraction toward the unknown and the unexpected in economic choices, 2.5-year-old children and capuchin monkeys were presented in Experiment 1 with a gambling task in which participants had to choose between 2 options, a secure option and a risky option characterized by an unexpected event. In contrast to capuchins, toddlers showed a strong preference for the risky option over the safe option. In Experiment 2, toddlers maintained their risky choices despite the increased salience o

Tissue expression of antigens of ABH blood groups in species of New World Monkeys (Aotus infulatus, Callithrix jacchus, Sapajus apella and Saimiri sciureus).

ABH antigens are histo-antigens, but were first described on the surface of human erythrocytes. They are found in those cells only in great apes and humans, while in more primitive animals they are found in tissues and body fluids. ABH antigens are mainly distributed in tissues that are in contact with the external environment and may serve as ligands for pathogens in tissues or block their connection. Description of the distribution of these molecules in non-human primate tissues is restricted to a few tissues and species. This paper describes the expression of human A, B and H type antigens

Monkeys (Sapajus apella and Macaca tonkeana) and great apes (Gorilla gorilla, Pongo abelii, Pan paniscus, and Pan troglodytes) play for the highest bid.

Many studies investigate the decisions made by animals by focusing on their attitudes toward risk, that is, risk-seeking, risk neutrality, or risk aversion. However, little attention has been paid to the extent to which individuals understand the different odds of outcomes. In a previous gambling task involving 18 different lotteries (Pelé, Broihanne, Thierry, Call, & Dufour, 2014), nonhuman primates used probabilities of gains and losses to make their decision. Although the use of complex mathematical calculation for decision-making seemed unlikely, we applied a gradual decrease in the chance

A Case Series Evaluating the Correlation Between Glycosuria Measurement and Serum Fructosamine in Two Diabetic De Brazza's Monkeys (Cercopithecus neglectus) and a Diabetic Tufted Capuchin (Sapajus apella).

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common condition affecting non-human primates (NHPs). The use of serum fructosamine in NHPs is a useful monitoring tool. Data does not exist to show whether there is any correlation between glycosuria and serum fructosamine. The purpose of this case series was to evaluate if there is a correlation between these two measurements to inform future monitoring of diabetic NHPs. METHODS: Two De Brazza's monkeys (Cercopithecus neglectus) and one tufted capuchin (Sapajus apella) previously diagnosed with DM underwent daily urinalysis monitoring. The average of
