Drug-related sarcopenia as a secondary sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia has a significant impact on falls, physical function, activities of daily living, and quality of life in older adults, and its prevention and treatment are becoming increasingly important as the global population ages. In addition to primary age-related sarcopenia, activity-related sarcopenia, disease-related sarcopenia, and nutrition-related sarcopenia have been proposed as secondary sarcopenia. Polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medication based on multiple diseases cause health problems in older patients. In some cases, drugs used for therapeutic or preventive purposes ac

Sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is the accelerated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function commonly, but not exclusively, associated with advancing age. It is observed across many species including humans in whom it can lead to decline in physical function and mobility as well as to increased risk of adverse outcomes including falls, fractures and premature mortality. Although prevalence estimates vary because sarcopenia has been defined in different ways, even using a conservative approach, the prevalence is between 5% and 10% in the general population. A life course framework has been proposed for understandin

[Sarcopenia].

The term sarcopenia stands for the age-related loss of muscle mass and is pahophysiologically closely linked to the "frailty syndrome". The search for sarcopenia - the combination of both a muscle loss and a reduced muscle function or strength - is nowadays part of the comprehensive geriatric assessment in Geriatric Medicine. From a pahophysiological point of view, different factors are involved as in all geriatric snydromes, but a low-grade inflammatory state is a cornerstone in all of them. Differentiation to cachexia is important, as the latter is not as amenable to treatment strategies. Ma

Sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is defined as a combination of low muscle mass with low muscle function. The term was first used to designate the loss of muscle mass and performance associated with aging. Now, recognized causes of sarcopenia also include chronic disease, a physically inactive lifestyle, loss of mobility, and malnutrition. Sarcopenia should be differentiated from cachexia, which is characterized not only by low muscle mass but also by weight loss and anorexia. Sarcopenia results from complex and interdependent pathophysiological mechanisms that include aging, physical inactivity, neuromuscular comp

[Aging-related frailty and sarcopenia. Frailty, sarcopenia and dysphagia.].

Frailty and sarcopenia occur not only in whole-body but also oral and swallowing function. Presbyphagia is age-related decline of swallowing function in older adults. Oral frailty is age-related decline of oral function in older adults. Presbyphagia and oral frailty are not dysphagia but frailty of oral and swallowing function. Oral sarcopenia is defined as sarcopenia in muscles of the oral cavity. Sarcopenic dysphagia is characterized by swallowing difficulty resulting from a loss of mass and function in whole-body skeletal and swallowing muscles. Sarcopenic dysphagia is diagnosed using a 5-s

Uremic Sarcopenia.

"Uremic sarcopenia" refers to a progressive decrease in muscle mass, strength, and function despite normal skeletal muscle physiology in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Sarcopenia involves multiple risk factors, comprising immunological changes, hormonal, metabolic acidosis, reduced protein intake, and physical inactivity. All these risk factors, along with complex pathophysiological mechanisms including ubiquitin, insulin/IGF-1, myostatin, and indoxyl sulfate, activate downstream pathways that ultimately increase muscle degradation while reducing muscle regeneration. Uremic sarcop

Malnutrition, Sarcopenia, and Malnutrition Sarcopenia Syndrome in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Introduction: Idiopathic pulmonaryy fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive interstitial lung disease with a poor prognosis. While comorbidities like pulmonary hypertension and lung cancer have been studied extensively, less attention has been paid to the implications of malnutrition and sarcopenia in patients with IPF. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and the combined malnutrition-sarcopenia syndrome in patients with IPF using the latest diagnostic criteria from the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) and the European Working Group on Sarcopenia i

Sarcopenia and osteoporosis.

Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are common, interconnected conditions, in aging populations that lead to increased frailty, disability and a heightened risk of falls and fractures. Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength and function, that often coexists with osteoporosis, which is characterized by reduced bone strenght for a decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and altered bone quality. Together, these conditions form a clinical syndrome known as osteosarcopenia. Both disorders share common risk factors, including chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and hormonal changes, w

Sarcopenia in Hemiplegia.

Sarcopenia is a disease characterized by quantitative and qualitative degeneration of the skeletal muscles and it primarily presents with a decline in the muscle strength. It frequently occurs in patients after a cerebrovascular accident due to a combination of various factors, such as the brain injury, structural adaptations, limited physical activity as long as malnutrition. Most of the articles and reviews concerning stroke-related sarcopenia are limited and usually are discussing about the factors and causes that may lead to the muscle wasting and the particular characteristics that distin

Malnutrition and sarcopenia.

Risk for or established malnutrition is frequent in older adults, accompanied by functional limitations, increased morbidity and mortality. Protein-energy malnutrition is often observed and leads besides other predisposing factors to sarcopenia, the increased loss of muscle mass with aging. Sarcopenia is an integral correlate of the physical component of the frailty syndrome. Even though sarcopenia often reaches levels where mobility, balance and functionality on overall are hampered, its diagnosis has not become part of the standard diagnostic and therapeutic repertoire of geriatric medicine.

Hormones and Sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of muscle mass associated with a loss of muscle function, e.g., walking speed. A number of consensus definitions exist for sarcopenia with cut-off points being ethnically specific. A rapid screen test (SARC-F) is available and does not require different ethnic cut-off points. Sarcopenia leads to the development of frailty, disability and mortality. The prevalence of sarcopenia varies from 1-29% in community- dwelling and 14 to 33% in long-term care populations. Hormones play a role in the development of muscle mass and in the regulation of muscle strength. Tes

Prevention of Sarcopenia.

This chapter outlines the definition of sarcopenia and the challenges faced by the scientific and clinical community in obtaining a universally accepted definition. Because sarcopenia is a risk factor for a multitude of adverse health outcomes, the chapter discusses the strengths and weaknesses of recent diagnostic criteria (sarcopenia algorithms) to identify older people with sarcopenia outlined by experts across the world. In particular, the assessment tools and their cut-off points (reference values) for muscle mass, strength, and physical performance are highlighted. Attention is also give

Sarcopenia and Ageing.

Musculoskeletal ageing is a major health challenge as muscles and bones constitute around 55-60% of body weight. Ageing muscles will result in sarcopenia that is characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength with a risk of adverse outcomes. In recent years, a few consensus panels provide new definitions for sarcopenia. It was officially recognized as a disease in 2016 with an ICD-10-CM disease code, M62.84, in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). With the new definitions, there are many studies emerging to investigate the pathogenesis of

Sarcopenia in youth.

Recent research has revealed causes other than aging that may induce sarcopenia in young people, contrary to the long-studied age-dependent reduction in muscular mass and function. The risk of sarcopenia begins in early adulthood, resulting in exaggerated muscle dysfunction in later life. Despite its clinical significance, research on youth-onset sarcopenia is still in its infancy. Due to a paucity of epidemiologic data and standardized criteria for sarcopenia in youth, determining the prevalence of sarcopenia in the young population remains challenging. Based on the evidence, >1 in every 10 y

Sarcopenia and nutrition.

Preserving or restoring adequate nutritional status is a key factor to delay the onset of chronic diseases and to accelerate recovery from acute illnesses. In particular, consistent and robust data show the loss of muscle mass, that is, sarcopenia, is clinically relevant since it is closely related to increased morbidity and mortality in healthy individuals and patients. Sarcopenia is defined as the age-related loss of muscle mass and function. International study groups have recently proposed separate definitions and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia. Unfortunately, the rate of agreement in

Spine-specific sarcopenia: distinguishing paraspinal muscle atrophy from generalized sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Atrophy of the paraspinal musculature (PM) as well as generalized sarcopenia are increasingly reported as important parameters for clinical outcomes in the field of spine surgery. Despite growing awareness and potential similarities between both conditions, the relationship between "generalized" and "spine-specific" sarcopenia is unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate the association between generalized and spine-specific sarcopenia. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. PATIENT SAMPLE: Patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion surgery for degenerative spinal patho

Sarcopenia Definition: The Position Statements of the Sarcopenia Definition and Outcomes Consortium.

OBJECTIVES: To develop an evidence-based definition of sarcopenia that can facilitate identification of older adults at risk for clinically relevant outcomes (eg, self-reported mobility limitation, falls, fractures, and mortality), the Sarcopenia Definition and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) crafted a set of position statements informed by a literature review and SDOC's analyses of eight epidemiologic studies, six randomized clinical trials, four cohort studies of special populations, and two nationally representative population-based studies. METHODS: Thirteen position statements related to the

Chemotherapy-Induced Sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is being consistently recognized as a condition not only associated with the presence of a malignancy but also induced by the oncologic therapies. Due to its negative impact on tolerance to chemotherapy and final outcome in both medical and surgical cancer patients, sarcopenia should be always considered and prevented, and, if recognized, should be appropriately treated. A CT scan at the level of the third lumbar vertebra, using an appropriate software, is the more common and easily available way to diagnose sarcopenia. It is now acknowledged that mechanisms involved in iatrogenic s
