Early influences on child satiety-responsiveness: the role of weaning style.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition during infancy may have a long-term impact upon weight gain and eating style. How infants are introduced to solid foods may be important. Traditionally, infants are introduced to solid foods via spoon-feeding of purees. However, baby-led weaning advocates allowing infants to self-feed foods in their whole form. Advocates suggest this may promote healthy eating styles, but evidence is sparse. The aim of the current study was to compare child eating behaviour at 18-24 months between infants weaned using a traditional weaning approach and those weaned using a baby-led weanin

Satiety responsiveness and eating behavior among Chilean adolescents and the role of breastfeeding.

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns of satiety responsiveness and its relationship to eating in the absence of hunger (EAH), in a cohort of adolescents. We also assessed whether sex, body mass index and duration of breastfeeding, during infancy, predicted satiety responsiveness and eating behavior at 16 years. METHODS: Adolescents (n=576) from a longitudinal cohort, which began as an iron deficiency anemia preventive trial, participated in an unlimited breakfast after an overnight fast, and reported satiety response on a visual analog scale after the meal, followed by an EAH procedure. Height, w

Satiety does not alter the ventral striatum's response to immediate reward in bulimia nervosa.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) cycle between periods of binge-eating and compensatory behavior and periods of dietary restraint, suggesting extremes of under and overcontrol that may be metabolic-state related. This study examined the influence of hunger and satiety on impulsivity and neural responding during decision-making. Twenty-three women remitted from BN (RBN) and 20 healthy comparison women (CW) performed a delay discounting task after a 16-hr fast and following a standardized meal during functional neuroimaging. A dual-systems approach examined reward valuation (decision trials

Cav3.1 is a neuronal leucine sensor that mediates satiety and weight loss in response to dietary protein.

Dietary protein promotes satiety and weight loss, yet how appetite-regulating neurons sense dietary protein remains poorly understood. Here, we show that Cacna1g, which encodes the T-type voltage-gated calcium channel Cav3.1, is enriched in hypothalamic leucine-sensing neurons and mediates neuronal leucine sensing. Pharmacological inhibition of Cav3.1 blunts leucine-induced activation of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons in cultured neurons and brain slices, thereby suppressing the anorectic response to hypothalamic leucine in vivo. Genetic deletion of Cacna1g in POMC neurons abolishes the a

Response in taste circuitry is not modulated by hunger and satiety in women remitted from bulimia nervosa.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) engage in episodes of binge eating, marked by loss of control and eating despite fullness. Does altered reward and metabolic state contribute to BN pathophysiology? Normally, hunger increases (and satiety decreases) reward salience to regulate eating. We investigated whether BN is associated with an abnormal response in a neural circuit involved in translating taste signals into motivated behavior, when hungry and fed. Twenty-six women remitted from BN (RBN) and 22 control women (CW) were administered water and sucrose during 2 counterbalanced fMRI visits,

Oral versus intubated feeding and the effect on glycaemic and insulinaemic responses, gastric emptying and satiety.

Cephalic phase responses (CPR) are important in early initiation of digestion and maximal absorption of nutrients prior to ingestion. Bypassing CPR has been shown to have consequences on metabolic responses that may influence satiety. The aim of this study was to investigate if using gastric intubation to bypass oro-pharyngeal and oesophageal exposure would reduce CPR including insulin and blood glucose and whether these impact on gastric emptying and satiety. Ten male subjects were tested on 2 occasions, 3-7 days apart after an overnight fast, in randomized order. Subjects were cannulated and

Satiety responsiveness and the relationship between breastfeeding and weight status of toddlers of overweight and obese women.

Numerous studies indicate an association between breastfeeding and decreased toddler adiposity. The mechanism behind this association is still unknown. One possibility is that children who are breastfed may have increased responsiveness to internal satiety cues. This study assessed the effect of satiety responsiveness on the association between breastfeeding and weight status among toddlers. We conducted a secondary analysis of data from 428 toddlers aged 2 years. Mothers' body mass index (BMI) and children's BMI z score were calculated from measured height and weight. Mothers completed a deta

Aberrant Cerebral Blood Flow in Response to Hunger and Satiety in Women Remitted from Anorexia Nervosa.

The etiology of pathological eating in anorexia nervosa (AN) remains poorly understood. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is an indirect marker of neuronal function. In healthy adults, fasting increases CBF, reflecting increased delivery of oxygen and glucose to support brain metabolism. This study investigated whether women remitted from restricting-type AN (RAN) have altered CBF in response to hunger that may indicate homeostatic dysregulation contributing to their ability to restrict food. We compared resting CBF measured with pulsed arterial spin labeling in 21 RAN and 16 healthy comparison women

Comparison of Glucose and Satiety Hormone Response to Oral Glucose vs. Two Mixed-Nutrient Meals in Rats.

The obesity epidemic is driving interest in identifying strategies that enhance appetite control by altering the secretion of hormones that regulate satiety and food intake. An appropriate nutrient stimulus, such as a meal or oral nutrient solution, is needed to elicit the secretion of satiety hormones in order to evaluate the impact of dietary and other interventions. Our objective was to compare the effects of oral glucose vs. mixed nutrients on plasma concentrations of glucose and appetite-regulating hormones to determine the most appropriate oral nutrient challenge to trigger robust hormon

Sucrose sham feeding on a binge schedule releases accumbens dopamine repeatedly and eliminates the acetylcholine satiety response.

Drinking a sugar solution on an intermittent schedule can promote sugar bingeing and cause signs of dependence while releasing dopamine repeatedly like a drug of abuse. It is hypothesized that sweet taste alone is sufficient for this effect in sucrose bingeing rats. On the theory that acetylcholine in the nucleus accumbens plays a role in satiety, it is further hypothesized that purging the stomach contents will delay acetylcholine release. Rats with gastric fistulas and nucleus accumbens guide shafts for microdialysis were fed 12 h each day. During the first hour, fistulas were open for the s

Normal-weight individuals experience an increased drive to eat and greater meal-satiety response in response to weight-loss: results from the NUTRILEX project.

While there is an increasing prevalence of individuals with "normal weight" engaged in diet-induced weight loss, few studies have examined the effects of these practices on appetitive profile in this population. This study aimed to explore energy intake, appetite sensations, food reward, and eating behaviour profile in response to diet-induced weight loss in males and females with normal weight. We hypothesized that normal-weight individuals would experience an increase in appetite feelings and food reward in response to weight loss. Participants completed experimental visits at baseline (T0,

Lipid-Enriched Cooking Modulates Starch Digestibility and Satiety Hormone Responses in Traditional Nixtamalized Maize Tacos.

Traditional taco preparation methods, such as oil immersion and steaming, can significantly affect the nutritional and metabolic characteristics of the final product. This study evaluated tacos made with five commercial nixtamalized maize flours and four common fillings (chicharron, beef skirt, potato, and refried beans), processed using three different methods: Plain, Full-Fat, and Patted-Dry. We assessed their chemical composition, starch digestibility, and thermal properties, and measured satiety-related hormone responses in mice. Fillings had a stronger influence on protein, fat, and moist

Intraduodenal nutrient infusion differentially alters intestinal nutrient sensing, appetite, and satiety responses in lean and obese subjects.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal nutrient sensing regulates food intake and energy metabolism by acting locally and relaying nutritional status to the brain. It is unclear whether these mechanisms are altered in obese humans. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate differences in duodenal nutrient sensing in humans with or without obesity and the effects of transiently blocking vagal transmission on nutrient sensing, hunger, and appetite. METHODS: In a single-blinded, randomized, cross-over design, subjects with or without obesity (n = 14 and n = 11, respectively) were infused intraduodenally with saline

Satiety, glycemic profiles, total antioxidant capacity, and postprandial glycemic responses to different sugars in healthy Malaysian adults.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated a low-glycemic index (GI), minimally refined brown sugar (MRBS) that retains a consistent amount of antioxidant polyphenols. This study aimed to determine whether MRBS has a lower postprandial glycemic response and GI value compared with other types of refined sugar (RS). Low glycemic response foods are also reported to increase satiety. Accordingly, we also evaluated satiety profiles, glycemic profiles (glucose, insulin, and glucagon), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). METHODS: This work shows the results of two single-blind, cross-over studies (studies 1 and

Hunger perceptions and satiety responses among normal-weight bulimics and normals to a high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich food.

The hunger perceptions and satiety responses to a high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich food among 10 normal-weight females who met the DSM-III criteria for bulimia were compared with 10 normal-weight females who denied a current or past history of eating or weight disorders. As indicated by self-report responses on the Hunger-Satiety Questionnaire, bulimics did not differ from the normals in their perceptions of hunger sensations. Differences, however, were detected in the responses following eating. Most notably, the bulimics reported feelings of irritability, nervousness, tenseness and depression

Increased oral processing and a slower eating rate increase glycaemic, insulin and satiety responses to a mixed meal tolerance test.

PURPOSE: Variations in specific oral processing behaviours may contribute to differences in glucose, insulin and satiety responses to a standardised test meal. This study tested how natural variations in oral processing between slower and faster eaters contribute to differences in post-prandial glucose (PP glucose), insulin response (PP insulin) and post-meal satiety for a standardised test meal. METHODS: Thirty-three participants with higher risk for type 2 diabetes consumed a standardised test-meal while being video recorded to derive specific oral processing behaviours. Distinct modulatory effects of satiety and sibutramine on brain responses to food images in humans: a double dissociation across hypothalamus, amygdala, and ventral striatum.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore brain responses to food images in overweight humans, examining independently the impact of a prescan meal ("satiety") and the anti-obesity drug sibutramine, a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor. We identified significantly different responses to these manipulations in amygdala, hypothalamus, and ventral striatum. Each region was specifically responsive to high-calorie compared to low-calorie food images. However, the ventral striatal response was attenuated by satiety (but unaffected by sibutramine), while the hypothalamic an

Anorectic response to the trichothecene T-2 toxin correspond to plasma elevations of the satiety hormone glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and peptide YY3-36.

T-2 toxin, a potent type A trichothecene mycotoxin, is produced by various Fusarium species and can negatively impact animal and human health. Although anorexia induction is a common hallmark of T-2 toxin-induced toxicity, the underlying mechanisms for this adverse effect are not fully understood. The goal of this study was to determine the roles of two gut satiety hormones, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and Peptide YY3-36 (PYY3-36) in anorexia induction by T-2 toxin. Elevations of plasma GIP and PYY3-36 markedly corresponded to anorexia induction following oral exposure t
