"End-of-Life Care Is as Important as Any Other Lifesaving Task": A Scandinavian Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care physicians often provide end-of-life (EOL) care in the intensive care units (ICUs). However, knowledge about the physicians' role and confidence in EOL care after the decision to withdraw life-sustaining therapy is unknown. This study aimed to explore the confidence and the self-perceived role of specialized ICU physicians in performing EOL care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following criteria-based sampling, a questionnaire was sent to ICU physicians in Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. Questions included: (1) Background information and existing guidelines,

Birth interventions and outcomes among first time mothers: A population-based register study in four Nordic countries.

INTRODUCTION: Although the Nordic countries generally report lower caesarean section rates compared with middle- and high-income settings, caesarean section represents only one dimension of obstetric intervention. Limited evidence exists regarding the prevalence of physiological birth across the Nordic region. We aimed to describe and compare cross-country variations in intrapartum intervention rates and birth-related complications among nulliparous women in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. METHODS: This Nordic observational study used data from the Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swe

Frailty and decline in independent living in older adults: differences between the Baltic and Nordic countries.

BACKGROUND: The associations between frailty and functional decline, as well as a reduced ability to live independently in older age, have been widely studied; however, trajectories may differ between regions. The aim of the study was to assess changes in the ability to live independently over a two-year period across different stages and components of frailty, and to examine regional differences among adults aged 65 years and older in the Baltic and Nordic countries. METHODS: A longitudinal analysis was conducted using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE),

Late-Life Suicidal Ideation in Nordic and Central-European Countries: Gender Differences and Risk Factors from the SHARE Study.

Older adults are disproportionately affected by suicide, yet suicidal ideation in this population remains underexplored. This study examines gender-specific risk factors and regional differences in late-life suicidal ideation across Nordic and Visegrad countries, with loneliness as a key social determinant. This study analysed data from 11,712 participants aged 50 years and older from seven European countries (Nordic and Visegrad regions), drawing on Wave 8 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Logistic regression was used to examine gender- and region-specific asso

Management of Pain in the Intensive Care Unit: A Nordic Survey.

BACKGROUND: Pain is common in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with up to one-third experiencing pain at rest and even more during mobilization and clinical procedures. This survey aimed to explore physicians' attitudes and preferences regarding pain management in adult ICU patients in the Nordic countries. METHODS: We conducted an electronic survey targeting physicians working regularly in an ICU in the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The survey focused on pain assessment, pharmacological treatments, and post-discharge follow-up of adult ICU patients. RESUL

Performance of a 74-Microhaplotype Assay in Kinship Analyses.

Microhaplotypes (MHs) consisting of multiple SNPs and indels on short stretches of DNA are new and interesting loci for forensic genetic investigations. In this study, we analysed 74 previously defined MHs in two of the populations that our laboratory provides with forensic genetic services, Danes and Greenlanders. In addition to the 229 SNPs that originally made up the 74 MHs, 66 SNPs and 3 indels were identified in the two populations, and 45 of these variants were included in new definitions of the MHs, whereas 24 SNPs were considered rare and of little value for case work. The average effe

Anxiety and depression in pregnant women who have experienced a previous perinatal loss: a case-cohort study from Scandinavia.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal loss can have long-lasting adverse effects on a woman's psychosocial health, including during subsequent pregnancies. However, maternal mental health status after perinatal loss during subsequent pregnancy is understudied with very little data available for Scandinavian populations. AIMS: The primary aim of the study was to explore the association between previous perinatal loss and anxiety/depression symptoms of expectant mothers during the subsequent pregnancy. The secondary aim of this study was to explore possible determinants of maternal mental health during the sub

Changes in 1-year relative survival of patients with cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden: A population-based cohort study.

During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, reported cancer cases declined in the Nordic countries, potentially reflecting delays in cancer diagnosis. We compared 1-year relative survival (RS) and excess mortality of patients diagnosed with cancer in the Nordic countries in March-December 2020 with that expected based on patients diagnosed in 2011-2019. We used flexible parametric RS models, defining excess mortality as the difference in total mortality between patients with cancer and the national population without cancer. We report the ratio between the observed and expected excess mort

Population genomics, demography, and circum-Baltic connectivity of Early Medieval southwestern Finland.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of Early Medieval Finland (1050-1250 CE) relies primarily on archaeological evidence, as contemporary sources are scarce. The available evidence indicates two distinct cultural-economic zones: coastal and inland. Using newly generated genomic data from 34 ancient individuals alongside modern Finnish genomes, we characterise Late Iron Age and Early Medieval ancestry in southwestern Finland, reconstruct demographic patterns, and place individuals within a circum-Baltic relatedness network. RESULTS: Early Medieval ancestry in inland southwestern Finland was very similar to

The experience of pregnancy among women living with HIV in Nordic countries: A qualitative narrative enquiry.

OBJECTIVE: The success of antiretroviral therapy has resulted in the normalization of pregnancy among women living with HIV and a very low risk of perinatal transmission of HIV. Despite these advances, women living with HIV still face complex medical and psychosocial issues during pregnancy. The purpose of this study is to describe experiences of pregnancy and the relevance of social support among women living with HIV in Nordic countries. METHODS: This qualitative study examined data from pregnant women living with HIV from sites in Denmark, Sweden and Finland from 2019 to 2020. Data were co

Sexuality Among Young Danes Treated for Long-Lasting or Severe Physical Disease: Baseline Findings in a Nationwide Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Sexual ramifications of physical disease are well-documented in adult populations, but are scarcely investigated among adolescents and young adults (AYA). This study compared measures of sexuality and sexual health among 8,696 15-year-old to 24-year-old Danes with and without a history of treatment for long-lasting or severe physical disease. METHODS: Using baseline data from Project SEXUS, a nationally representative cohort study on sexual health in the Danish population, differences in various domains of sexual behaviors and sexual health between AYA who have and AYA who have not b

What We Don't Speak of: Exploring the Impact of Historical Trauma and Discrimination on the Health and Well-Being of Sweden Finns.

Sweden Finns are one of the five officially recognized national minority groups in Sweden. Approximately 3.6 percent of the total Swedish population are either born in Finland or have at least one Finnish-born parent; however, since Swedish national minority legislation explicitly applies a self-identification principle rather than objective criteria in determining who belongs to a national minority group, this figure might not correspond to the number of people who actually view themselves as Sweden Finns. On group level, Sweden Finns have been socioeconomically underprivileged in comparison

Running economy and lower-limb anthropometry in adult male Kenyan and Danish middle- and long-distance runners and in untrained adolescents.

Kenyan athletes have dominated competitive middle- and long-distance running for more than half a century, a phenomenon suggested to be attributable, at least in part, to superior running economy. Given that lower-leg anthropometry is an important determinant of running economy, a key contributor to the athletic performance of Kenyan runners is thought to be slender lower legs. Running economy and lower-leg anthropometrics, including relative lower-leg length and mean lower-leg thickness, were measured in adult middle- to long-distance runners, including 12 Kenyan elite and 29 sub-elite runner

General and orofacial symptoms associated with acute and long COVID in 80- and 90-year-old Swedish COVID-19 survivors.

OBJECTIVES: To describe acute and long COVID-19 symptoms among older elderly Swedes and to find predictive factors for the development symptoms associated with acute and long COVID. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire about general and oral health was mailed to all 80-year-olds (born 1942, n = 6299) and 90-year-olds (born 1932, n = 1904) in two Swedish counties. Participants reporting COVID-19 were asked to complete an additional questionnaire. RESULTS: Overall response rate was 66 % (n = 5375). Affirmative responses to having been sick/tested positive for COVID-19 were reported by 577 per

Heritability of cancers in Japanese population: Estimation from recent cohort data.

Cancers are genetically categorized into common diseases showing a so-called multifactorial inheritance except for rare familial cancers. And as a measure to estimate the strength of genetic factors in the multifactorial diseases, heritability (h2) is generally used. However, there have been few reports on the estimation of heritability for cancers. We calculated the heritability from the incidence in subject population and the familial recurrence rate in first-degree relatives of the affected for cancers quoting the data from a large-scale prospective cohort study by Hidaka et al. published i

Practice-Level Variation in the Provision of Subsidised Dental Services to Adult Danes in 2019: A Register-Based Study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate practice-level variation in common dental diagnostic, preventive, and care services provided for Danish adults who underwent a dental examination. METHODS: This was a nationwide register-based study. Subsidised dental services delivered during the 13-week period subsequent to the provision of one of three eligible dental examinations (extended, basic, or recall examination) during the first 9 months of 2019 were investigated. Bayesian multilevel regression models were used to estimate the practice-level average predicted probability of supragingival care

Concomitant exposure to air pollution, green space and noise, and risk of myocardial infarction: a cohort study from Denmark.

AIMS: The three correlated environmental exposures (air pollution, road traffic noise, and green space) have all been associated with the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). The present study aimed to analyse their independent and cumulative association with MI. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a cohort of all Danes aged 50 or older in the period 2005-17, 5-year time-weighted average exposure to fine particles (PM2.5), ultrafine particles, elemental carbon, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and road traffic noise at the most and least exposed façades of residence was estimated. Green space around residences was
