Scapegoating in group psychotherapy.

The purpose of this paper is to describe and illuminate the phenomenon of scapegoating in group psychotherapy. Specifically, the role of projective identification - on both individual and group-wide bases - in the evolution of the deviant is delineated. Individual, interpersonal, and whole-group interventions are presented along with the technique of functional subgrouping, a relatively new and particularly potent group intervention. Several case vignettes are detailed for illustration.

Scapegoating and the unpopular nurse.

This paper considers the theories of scapegoating and their application to nursing. It reviews the literature on scapegoating drawing particular attention to those studies which have emphasised on the instrumental uses of scapegoating in organisational contexts. The paper draws on data from a qualitative study of the identification and management of the 'problem' nurse conducted in three healthcare Trusts. It describes a number of illustrative cases in which different types of scapegoating occurred. The paper argues that scapegoating is an ethical challenge which nurses must face.

Physical Violence and Scapegoating Within the Family: An Exploration of Biblical Texts and Contemporary Psychology.

To understand physical violence in the family, it is important to define the role of the victim. The term "scapegoat" is a universal anthropological concept, often used in sociological theories, where a certain group of people and/or minorities are often victimized or blamed (e.g., social ills). We may note that the phenomenon of scapegoating is most clearly expressed in the Bible. Therefore, we will use relevant biblical texts that refer to parental use of corporal punishment in which a child is scapegoated and/or victimized by parental violence. In this sense, the Bible is the most profound

Scapegoated communities, shared struggles: A call for solidarity with people who use drugs and queer and trans people.

Efforts to control, repress, and punish drug use and queer and trans existence are rising as right-wing extremism becomes increasingly mainstream. These connected efforts are seen through the stifling of bodily autonomy and agency using criminal-legal, biomedical and political apparatuses, and have been executed similarly for people who use drugs and queer and trans people alike. This is most notable for those who exist at the intersection of these communities. Both groups have withstood attempts at manufacturing internal hierarchies - always at the expense of those who are already most margin

Between gang talk and prohibition: The transfer of blame for County Lines.

BACKGROUND: The drug supply model termed 'County Lines' has generated extensive attention over recent years in the UK. Associated street violence, the involvement of young people and exploitation have been the source of intense concern. However, little discussion has sought to situate this drug market 'phenomenon' in relation to recent austerity policies and intensifying social exclusion. Drawing on Douglas' (1995) conceptualisation of scapegoating as a process of blame transfer, this paper provides a critical analysis of the ways that attention has been diverted from the social conditions tha

Orthostatic Hypotension and Psychosocial Adversity Among Postpartum Women in Zambia: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) represents a link between haemodynamic instability and psychosocial adversity in low-resource settings. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of OH among postpartum women in Ndola, Zambia, and examine associations with family scapegoating abuse (FSA) and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. METHODS: In a community-based cross-sectional study, postpartum women aged 20-30 years within one year of delivery (N = 666) underwent active-stand blood pressure testing. OH was defined as a ≥20 mmHg fall in systolic and/or ≥10 mmHg fall in diastolic pres

Community influences on white racial attitudes: what matters and why?

Tracing the roots of racial attitudes in historical events and individual biographies has been a long-standing goal of race relations scholars. Recent years have seen a new development in racial attitude research: Local community context has entered the spotlight as a potential influence on racial views. The race composition of the locality has been the most common focus; evidence from earlier decades suggests that white Americans are more likely to hold anti-black attitudes if they live in areas where the African-American population is relatively large. However, an influential 2000 article ar

Hostility in group psychotherapy.

To run a psychodynamic group therapeutically, the leader must understand the meanings and functions of hostility. Fundamental to this task is the leader's awareness of his or her bias toward hostility as a constructive or destructive feeling and willingness to serve as a lightening rod for it. This paper discusses the sources of hostility during different stages of group development. The therapeutic handling of hostility is discussed under the following topics: theoretical considerations, defensive functions, and communicative functions. Case examples illustrate the proper handling of contract

Intersectional Stigma as a Fundamental Cause of Health Disparities: A case study of how drug use stigma intersecting with racism and xenophobia creates health inequities for Black and Hispanic persons who use drugs over time.

Recent evidence points to racial and ethnic disparities in drug-related deaths and health conditions. Informed by stigma, intersectionality, intersectional stigma, and fundamental cause theories, we aimed to explore whether intersectional stigma was a fundamental cause of health. We document key events and policies over time and find that when progress is made new mechanisms emerge that negatively affect health outcomes for Black and Hispanic persons. We then focus on intersectional stigma targeting Black and Hispanic persons who use drugs. We document that when a person, or group of people, o

The double-edged sword of scapegoration: how anti-immigrant hostility harms both immigrants and host societies.

Immigration is among the most consequential social phenomena of the 21st century, yet the psychological dimensions of anti-immigrant hostility-particularly its bidirectional harms-remain insufficiently theorized. This paper introduces and defines the concept of scapegoration, a portmanteau of scapegoating and immigration, to describe the systematic attribution of structural societal failures to immigrant populations as a means of deflecting responsibility from institutional and political actors. Unlike xenophobia, which denotes generalized fear or hostility toward foreigners, scapegoration cap

A paradise for LGBT rights? The paradox of Belgium.

How is it that a small country such as Belgium, with its reputation of relative conservatism, has jumped to the forefront of LGBT-friendly nations when it comes to the extension of rights to, and implementation of government policies for, its LGBT population? The analysis offered here focuses on a combination of six causes: the impact of wider secularization processes; the political history and culture of the country; the organization of especially the Flemish LGBT movement and reasons for its political effectiveness; mainstream social trends in national scapegoating hierarchies; the overall m

Evolution of child psychiatric teamwork in a somatic hospital.

This paper outlines the evolution of child psychiatric team work within the context of a general hospital. It focuses especially on the professional challenges and systemic problems arising during this 8 year long process. The question of what happens when two cultures meet in the same arena is discussed, and the process whereby a minority becomes a reality in a well-established majority system is described. Special attention is devoted to those principles appearing to play a major role in the evolutionary process. Prominent among these are: (1) operating within the already established; (2) tr

The favoured child?

This case conference concerns a child who has been in care following a diagnosis of emotional abuse and a serious incident of physical abuse. She wants to return home again, and her parents, who had previously scapegoated her, now blame the family's previous ills on her sister instead. The Children Act 1989 gives considerable weight to the child's wishes, but what if the child returns home and is re-abused? In this case conference a child psychiatrist, a philosopher and a lawyer discuss the issues of clinicians' responsibilities, moral luck, and child care law.

COVID-19, Contagion, and Vaccine Optimism.

Steven Soderbergh's Contagion (2011) positions the vaccine as the end point of the arc of pandemic, marking both the containment of an elusive virus and the resumption of a life not fundamentally different from before the disease outbreak. The film reinforces the assumption that a pandemic will awaken all of us to the urgency of vaccination, persuading us to put aside our reservations and anxieties and the idea that compliance is the inevitable outcome of quarantine. This article explores how pro-vaccination cultural products such as Contagion might in fact undermine public health eff

The hidden costs of human cooperation.

Cooperation enables humans to reshape entire environments and build complex societies. Although often celebrated, cooperation also has hidden costs. By presenting core mechanisms behind its emergence, we demonstrate that maintaining cooperation frequently relies on social control and coercion, which can lead to extortion and discrimination. Group cooperation further necessitates defining who belongs to the group, fostering exclusion and intergroup conflict. Free-rider concerns fuel scapegoating and polarization. These downsides challenge the notion of cooperation as a simple success story. The

Mother Blame and the Just World Theory in Child Sexual Abuse Cases.

Mothers are blamed for a variety of negative experiences and outcomes of their children, including child sexual abuse (CSA). According to just world hypothesis (JWH), people have a need to view the world as one where there is no such thing as an innocent victim; that is, the world is fair and just. These beliefs predict victim blaming in situations such as sexual abuse, physical abuse, and robbery. However, JWH has not been applied to the examination of mother blame, a situation in which the blame target did not directly experience the traumatic event. We examined this application in two studi

Sewers and scapegoats: spatial metaphors of smallpox in nineteenth century San Francisco.

Medical geography is slowly including more social and cultural theory in its analysis of health issues. Yet there is still room for theoretical growth in the discipline, in areas such as historical inquiry, metaphoric landscapes of disease, and the role of disease and its interpretations in the production of place. With the example of four smallpox epidemics in nineteenth century San Francisco, application of these concepts is illustrated. Each successive epidemic in San Francisco brought stronger association of the disease with Chinatown, until an almost complete metonymy of place and disease

Prison homosexuality and its effect on post-prison sexual behavior.

Although there has grown up to a considerable literature on sex experiences in prison, little has been written on the post-prison behavioral patterns of those who, voluntarily or involuntarily, become initiated into homosexuality while incarcerated. In the light of the considerable number of prisoners and ex-prisoners in the original Kinsey sample, it is possible that the Institute for Sex Research might have in its files material that would shed light on this problem. To date, nothing has been forthcoming. In one of the few references to the subject, Kirkham (1972, p. 42) suggests that sexual
