Frogolide - An Unprecedented Sesquiterpene Macrolactone from Scent Glands of African Frogs.

Some amphibians use chemical signals in addition to optical and acoustical signals to transmit information. Males of mantellid frogs from Madagascar and hyperoliid frogs from Africa emit complex, species- and sex-specific bouquets of volatiles from their femoral or gular glands. We report here on the identification, synthesis, and determination of the absolute configuration of a macrocyclic lactone occurring in several species of both families, (S)-3,7,11-dodec-6,10-dien-12-olide (S-14, frogolide). Macrolides are a preferred compound class of frog volatiles. Nevertheless, frogolide is the firs

The metathoracic scent gland of the leaf-footed bug, Leptoglossus zonatus.

The metathoracic scent gland of 25-day-old adults of both sexes of the leaf-footed bug, Leptoglossus zonatus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Coreidae), are described based on optical microscopy analysis. No sexual dimorphism was observed in the glandular composition of this species. The gland is located in the anteroventral corner of the metathoracic pleura between the middle and posterior coxal pits. The opening to the outside of the gland is very wide and permanently open as it lacks a protective membrane. In the internal part, there is a pair of metathoracic glands that consist of piles of intertwin

Role of male scent glands in improving poison bait acceptance in female rats, Rattus norvegicus.

The poison (Zn3P2) bait mixed with preputial gland and cheek gland extract was highly effective as compared to poison bait mixed without the scent gland extract, in increasing the food consumption and mortality rate in rats. Among these two scent glands, preputial gland extract was more effective than cheek gland extract in increasing the bait acceptance. The scent gland extract mixed with poison bait was capable of improving the poison bait acceptance. A 10% concentration of scent gland extract was more effective than 5% concentration in acceptance of poison bait. The results suggest efficacy

Androgen plays an important role in regulating the synthesis of pheromone in the scent gland of muskrat.

The scent (musk) gland is an organ unique to muskrats and other scent-secreting animals, and the pheromones (musk) synthesized and secreted by the scent gland play a role in chemical communication among scent-secreting animals. The musk gland is synchronized with testicular developmental changes; however, little is known regarding androgen secretion from the testis and how this regulates pheromone synthesis and the secretion of scent. To investigate the effect of androgens on the synthesis of pheromones in the musk gland, we established a muskrat castration model by surgical removal of the tes

Responses by canids to scent gland secretions of the western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox).

Many snakes discharge malodorous fluids from paired scent glands in the base of the tail when they are disturbed. A number of authors suggest that these secretions repel predators. Scent gland secretions of the western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox), or dichloromethane extracts of them, were presented to coyotes (Canis latrans) in three field tests, and to domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) in two kennel tests, to determine whether responses of possible benefit to snakes are elicited. Free-ranging coyotes visited and rubbed and rolled at stations containing scent gland secretions in pe

Scenting Ketones in the Defense Glands of Two Julids From the Caucasus (Arthropoda, Myriapoda, Diplopoda, Julida).

Millipedes have developed specialized chemical defenses against predators and parasites. Here we investigated the strong repellent odour emitted by two julids from the Caucasus, Syrioiulus continentalis (Attems, 1903) and Pachyiulus krivolutskyi Golovatch, 1977. By NMR and GC-MS, as well as compound synthesis, we identified the major compound in the secretions of both species as 4-ethylhex-1-en-3-one. A second compound was tentatively identified as the dimer of the main compound as 2-ethyl-1-(6-(pentan-3-yl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-yl)butan-1-one. Both compounds amounting for more than 95% of t

Scent (Apocrine) Gland Adenocarcinoma in a Wedge-Capped Capuchin Monkey (Cebus olivaceus): Histological and Immunohistochemical Features.

In humans, apocrine gland tumours encompass a heterogeneous group of uncommon neoplasms with varied and unpredictable biological behaviour. They can be slow-growing lesions, recur after excision, produce lymph node metastasis in up to 50% of cases or lead to tumour-related death. We document a malignant scent adenocarcinoma in a wedge-capped capuchin monkey (Cebus olivaceus). Immunohistochemical labelling revealed complete absence of myoepithelial cells, a finding usually considered a hallmark of malignancy in humans; however, after a 2-year follow-up, the neoplasm had not recurred. This is th

Association Between Back Scent Gland Development and Reproductive Status in Male Brown Bears (Ursus arctos).

Cutaneous scent glands secrete chemical signals for communication, a significant portion of which is to convey information about male reproductive status. This might be particularly important to animals with intraspecific variation in male reproductive activity, such as bears. Male brown bears mark trees with their scent secreted from back apocrine and sebaceous glands during the breeding season and thus might convey information about reproductive status. Therefore, we speculated that the development of scent glands in the back reflects reproductive performance. We investigated the effects of

Increased squalene concentrations in the clitoral gland during the estrous cycle in rats: an estrus-indicating scent mark?

Squalene in the rat clitoral gland is reported to be semi-volatile and may serve as a chemo-signal. The objective was to determine squalene concentrations in the clitoral gland throughout the reproductive cycle. Clitoral glands were extracted with dichloromethane; 23 compounds were identified with Gas Chromatography linked Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Since squalene concentrations were significantly higher during proestrus and estrus, and remarkably reduced during metestrus and diestrus, we inferred that it could be an ovulation-indicating chemosignal in the female rat, acting as a scent mark fo

First report of natural infection by Trypanosoma cruzi in secretions of the scent glands and myocardium of Philander opossum (Marsupialia: Didelphidae): Parasitological and clinicopathological findings.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of American trypanosomiasis and can infect humans and different species of domestic and wild animals. The marsupials are important wild reservoirs of T. cruzi, aiding in the maintenance of this agent in sylvatic and peri-domestic environments. The objective of this study was to report the parasitological and clinicopathological findings of a natural infection by T. cruzi in one specimen of Philander opossum that originated from the Brazilian Amazon. The animal was captured in a forest fragment near a rural community with reports of human Chagas disease.

Differential activation of glomeruli in the ferret's main olfactory bulb by anal scent gland odours from males and females: an early step in mate identification.

Peripheral anosmia was previously found to disrupt sex discrimination and partner preference in male and female ferrets. Here we show directly that volatile anal scent gland odourants from male and female ferrets activated overlapping but distinguishable clusters of glomeruli located in the ventral-caudal portion of the main olfactory bulb (MOB) of breeding ferrets of both sexes. No glomerular activation was seen in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). The profile of MOB glomerular activation induced in oestrous females by male anal scents was very similar to that induced by direct contact with

Multi-omics unravels testis-regulated genetic mechanism of musk secretion in muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus).

BACKGROUND: During the scent secretion period, adult male muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) produce a musk-like fragrance similar to that of the forest musk deers (Moschus berezovskii). However, the underlying mechanism of scent secretion in muskrats were not well understood. Scent glands and testicular tissues from 2-year-old muskrats during non-scenting and scenting periods were analyzed using transcriptomics and metabolomics to identify key genes, metabolites, and pathways involved in scent secretion. RESULTS: Key findings include: (1) Significant differences were observed in the tissue struct

Do Nectar Guides in Flowers of Two Myosotis L. Species (Boraginaceae) Serve as Osmophores?

Osmophores, which constitute scent-releasing glands in flowers, have so far been insufficiently characterised. This study is the first to present the structure of scent glands exhibiting features consistent with those of osmophores in two Myosotis species (Boraginaceae). Petal tissues of Myosotis scorpioides and M. sylvatica were analysed using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Histochemical tests were performed to detect fragrance-producing tissues (neutral red), phenols (Toluidine blue O), lipids (Sudan III, Sudan Red B), and starch (Lugol

Identification and Synthesis of a Macrolide as an Anti-aphrodisiac Pheromone from Males of Heliconius erato phyllis.

Investigation of the contents of the scent glands of the heliconiine butterfly Heliconius erato phyllis via gas chromatography/electroantennography revealed an unprecedented active compound. The males transfer this compound to females during mating. The structure of (2R,6E,10R)-2,6-dimethyl-6-undecen-10-olide, a derivative of geranylacetone, was proposed on the basis of infrared and mass spectrometry spectra and microderivatization and confirmed by racemic and stereoselective syntheses. Bioassays with the synthetic macrolide showed the repellency of this compound, termed phyllisolide, when app

A muskrat tissue atlas of small non-coding RNAs and their regulatory roles in muskrat musk secretion.

Muskrat musk, secreted by the male muskrat scent gland during the secretion period, is a valuable natural product with promising pharmacological activities. Its synthesis is regulated not only by coding genes but also by small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs). However, a comprehensive tissue atlas of sncRNAs in muskrats has been lacking. To address this issue, we systematically profiled the expression levels of 6 sncRNA categories (piRNA [PIWI-interacting RNA], miRNA [microRNA], snoRNA [small nucleolar RNA], snRNA [small nuclear RNA], tRNA [transfer RNA], and other RNAs) across 13 tissues of the musk

Morphological and histological features of abdominal glands in Japanese marten (Martes melampus).

The Japanese marten (Martes melampus) is a solitary mustelid species with a strict territorial space that might be maintained by scent marking. However, whether Japanese martens have scent glands that secrete chemical signals remains unknown. We aimed to clarify whether the abdominal glands in these animals secrete chemical signals and, if so, to characterize their morphological and histological features. We investigated nine Japanese martens (eight M. m. tsuensis and one M. m. melampus) that were all roadkilled. Regardless of sex, season, and subspecies, they all had abdominal glands located

Effects of testosterone on the sternal cutaneous glands and genitalia of the male greater galago (Galago crassicaudatus crassicaudatus).

Adult male and some female Galago crassicaudatus have a sparsely haired sternal gland which is used in scent marking displays. In both sexes, the skin in the sternal area contains many large sebaceous and apocrine glands. The sebaceous glands are largest in males and are dependent upon testicular androgens. Spines on the glans penis are also androgen dependent; their possible behavioural functions are discussed.

Bilateral axillary apocrine nevi--a case report.

Apocrine glands are tubular glands, which function as scent glands. These are found at only a few sites like the axillae and anogenital region. They are present as modified glands in the external ear canal (ceruminous glands), in the eyelid (Moll's glands) and in the breast (mammary glands). Occasionally, apocrine glands are found on the face, in the scalp and on the abdomen where they are usually small and non-functional. Apocrine glands develop their secretory portion and become functional only at puberty. Tumours of these glands involving only apocrine tissue are very rare. We present an un

Histological and histochemical characterization of the musk gland in forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii): a preliminary study.

Musk is a biologically valuable secretion from the musk gland of male musk deer, with significant economic and medicinal importance. Due to severe decline and depletion of wild musk deer population, captive breeding of musk deer has become the primary approach for sustainable musk production. So far, the histological structure and secretion mechanism of the musk gland remain incompletely understood. In this study, we employed histological and immunohistochemical (IHC) techniques, along with three-dimensional (3D) tissue reconstruction, to systematically analyze the cellular composition and sec
