This article is situated within the framework of schema therapy and offers a comprehensive and clinically useful list of schema modes that have been identified as being relevant to conceptualizing complex psychological problems, such as those posed by personality disorders, and, in particular, the way that those problems are perpetuated. Drawing on the schema therapy literature, as well as other literature including that of cognitive behavior therapy and metacognitive therapy, over eighty modes are identified altogether, categorized under the widely accepted broad headings of Healthy Adult, Ch

Schema therapy (ST) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) have both shown to be effective treatment methods especially for borderline personality disorder. Both, ST and DBT, have their roots in cognitive behavioral therapy and aim at helping patient to deal with emotional dysregulation. However, there are major differences in the terminology, explanatory models and techniques used in the both methods. This article gives an overview of the major therapeutic techniques used in ST and DBT with respect to emotion regulation and systematically puts them in the context of James Gross' process model

Adolescence is a vital time in human development, marked by fast physiological and mental changes that render teenagers more vulnerable to psychological suffering. With the growing frequency of mental health concerns among adolescents, the question of how to effectively intervene and help them in dealing with these challenges has emerged as a critical topic in the field of psychotherapy. Schema therapy, originally proposed by Young in the 1990s as an integrative psychotherapy approach, was initially developed for the treatment of chronic psychological disorders, particularly personality disord

BACKGROUND: Schema therapy is an effective treatment for borderline personality disorder and other complex disorders. Schema therapy is feasible in older adults, and the first empirical support for its effectiveness in later life was provided in older patients with a cluster C personality disorder. The central concept of the schema therapy model is the early maladaptive schema (EMS). Early adaptive schemas (EAS) give rise to adaptive behaviour, and they also emerge during childhood, when core emotional needs are adequately met by primary caregivers.
AIMS: To examine the concept of EAS and its

IMPORTANCE: Schema therapy (ST), delivered either in an individual or group format, has been compared with other active treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD). To our knowledge, the 2 formats have not been compared with treatment as usual (TAU) or with each other. Such comparisons help determine best treatment practices.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether ST is more effectively delivered in a predominantly group or combined individual and group format and whether ST is more effective than optimal TAU for BPD.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this multicenter, 3-arm randomized

We aimed to explore the heterogeneity of schema therapy regarding (a) patient characteristics, (b) content, and (c) way of delivering schema therapy. A search was conducted of the electronic databases EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and COCHRANE up to June 15, 2022. Treatment studies were eligible if they (a) used schema therapy as (component of) the intervention examined, and (b) reported an outcome measure quantitatively. A total of 101 studies met the inclusion criteria, including randomized controlled trials (n = 30), non-randomized controlled trials (n = 8), pre-post designs (n

Central to the schema therapy model is the development of early maladaptive schemas due to unmet emotional needs in childhood. Recently, focus has shifted towards positive constructs in schema therapy, including early adaptive schemas or positive schemas and positive schema modes, such as the "healthy adult" and "happy child." This scoping review explores theoretical perspectives, assessment, and therapeutic use of these positive constructs in schema therapy. The PRISMA-ScR methodology was followed, using predefined search terms and databases (OVID, EBSCO, Mednar). After identifying 345 studie

OBJECTIVE: This study employs a person-centered transdiagnostic approach to examine how schema and mode profiles predict symptom severity reduction in schema group therapy for patients with personality disorders and enduring clinical syndromes.
METHOD: We analyzed symptom reduction in 248 patients across three formats of manualized, time-limited schema group therapy. Latent profile analysis and mixed multilevel modeling were used to determine the extent to which schema/mode classes predict symptom reduction, and whether the inclusion of individual schemas and modes enhances these predictions.

This article examines the development of the Kind (Good) Parent mode in schema therapy and supervision. A narrative review of literature on schema modes, Healthy Adult functioning, self-compassion, and experiential methods is integrated with therapists' and supervisors' clinical experience. We define the Kind Parent mode, distinguish it from related modes, and describe how it manifests in self-communication and communication with others. We outline cognitive, behavioral, experiential, imagery based, and supervisory methods, including guided discovery, cognitive restructuring, role playing, cha

BACKGROUND: The evidence base for schema therapy has evolved significantly since it was first developed by Jeffrey Young in the 1990s. The aim of this bibliometric analysis was to summarize the trends and characteristics of the quantitative literature on schema therapy.
METHOD: PsycINFO, PubMed and CINAHL Complete databases were last searched on 1 June 2023 following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 statement to identify peer-reviewed journal articles written in English that reported on original quantitative research on schema therapy or schema thera

This article presents an adaptation of group schema therapy (GST) developed for patients with severe anxiety. An anonymized case presentation exemplifies the adaptation. GST was originally developed to treat clients with maladaptive personality traits but has been applied to a variety of disorders in recent years. For patients with severe anxiety, who have not responded to other treatments, GST may be a promising approach. The paper presents the GST model, the evidence supporting it, and its adaptation for the treatment of anxiety. The case presentation illustrates the therapeutic process and

Schema therapy is an integrative approach to treat patients with personality disorders and other complex psychological problems. Group schema therapy has been developed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of schema therapy by providing a supportive and stimulating environment for change. This article introduces the River of Life Method, a novel technique for facilitating group schema therapy, based on the metaphor of a river of life. The method helps patients to identify and modify their maladaptive schemas and modes in a nurturing process in the group. The article describes the theore

Schema therapy is an effective treatment for personality disorders (PDs). The theory of schema therapy assumes that the decrease of global psychological distress is mediated by change in Early Maladaptive Schemas. The few studies that have investigated a temporal relationship have produced contradictory results. This study examined the temporal relationship between changes in Early Maladaptive Schemas and global psychological distress in Group Schema Therapy (GST) for patients with personality disorders. Assessments were made of 115 patients at baseline, after 20, 40 and after 60 sessions of t

Distressing voice-hearing experiences are frequently characterised by hostility, criticism and abuse and emerging evidence suggests that these experiences may reflect internalised dysfunctional schema modes, particularly the Punitive Parent mode. Yet no research has evaluated a schema therapy intervention explicitly targeting schema modes. This naturalistic case series evaluated schema therapy for voices (STv) within a routine specialist psychology service. Twenty transdiagnostic voice hearers started formulation-driven STv comprising approximately 20-30 individual sessions integrating chair-w

Treatment for Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) often follows a practice-based psychodynamic psychotherapy approach that is conducted in three phases: symptom stabilization, trauma processing, and identity integration and rehabilitation. The percentage of patients that reach the third phase is relatively low, treatment duration is long, and the effects of this treatment on the core DID symptoms have been found to be small or absent, leaving room for improvement in the treatment of DID. Schema Therapy (ST) is an integrative psychotherapy that has been proposed as a treatment for DID. This ap

Adolescents and young adults are increasingly susceptible to developing mental health conditions, but many young people do not respond well to the current evidence-based treatments. Schema therapy has been effective in adults with mental health conditions, and research suggests it holds promise in adolescents with chronic or treatment-resistant mental health conditions. Our systematic review searched for articles that applied schema therapy in people aged between 12 and 30. Databases searched using the EBSCOHost platform included PubMed MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Li

OBJECTIVE: Methylmercuric chloride (MMC) has neurotoxicity, while hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has shown inhibitory properties against nerve damage induced by various factors. The study aimed to investigate the impact of H2S on MMC-induced learning and memory impairment in mice and to explore the underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: A mouse model of learning and memory impairment was established by MMC gavage, and sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) was used as an H2S donor for intervention. Cell viability and live/dead cell ratio in HT22 neuronal cells were assessed by CCK-8 assay and Calcein/PI staining, respe

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper was to examine the relationships between perceived parental bonding, Early Maladaptive Schemas (Young et al., 2003), and outcome of schema therapy of Cluster C personality problems and whether the perceptions of parental bonding could be influenced by schema therapy.
METHOD: The sample consisted of 45 patients with panic disorder and/or agoraphobia and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, Cluster C personality traits who participated in an 11-week inpatient programme consisting of two phases; the first was a 5-week panic
