Exploration of Schiff Bases: Structures, Syntheses, and Biological Activities.

Schiff bases are organic compounds that were first discovered in 1864 by German chemist Hugo Schiff. These bases result from a condensation reaction between a primary amine and a carbonyl compound, usually an aldehyde or a ketone. This reaction eliminates a water molecule and forms an imine group (-C=N-), the characteristic feature of Schiff bases. These bases are widely studied for their simple synthesis, structural diversity, and numerous applications in pharmacology. This review discusses their general structures and methods of synthesis. Schiff bases can be classified according to their st

Tailor-Made Chitosan-Azovanillin Photochromic Schiff Bases for Antimicrobial Applications.

Functional biomaterials with responsive properties are in high demand due to their potential application as antimicrobial agents. In this study, we have developed a photochromic chitosan-Azo-Schiff base using condensation reactions of chitosan with three derivatives of azobenzene. The biopolymers thus produced were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the materials had good thermal stability, an amorphous nature, and belt-like morpholo

Sulfadiazine Salicylaldehyde-Based Schiff Bases: Synthesis, Antimicrobial Activity and Cytotoxicity.

The resistance among microbes has brought an urgent need for new drugs. Thus, we synthesized a series of Schiff bases derived from the sulfa drug sulfadiazine and various salicylaldehydes. The resulting 4-[(2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino]-N-(pyrimidin-2-yl)benzene-sulfonamides were characterized and evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, moulds, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, nontuberculous mycobacteria (M. kansasii, M. avium) and their cytotoxicity was determined. Among bacteria, the genus Staphylococcus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus, showed the highest susc

Chitosan-based Schiff bases: Promising materials for biomedical and industrial applications.

There is plenty of scope for modifying chitosan, an only polycationic natural polysaccharide, owing to its reactive functional groups, namely hydroxyl and amino groups. Although innumerable numbers of chitosan derivatives have been synthesized by modifying these groups and reported elsewhere, in this review article, an attempt has been exclusively made to demonstrate the syntheses of various chitosan-based Schiff bases (CSBs) simply by allowing the reactions of reactive amino groups of chitosan with different aldehydes/ketones of interest. Due to their very peculiar and unique characteristics,

Schiff Bases as Multifunctional Agents in Parkinson's Disease Therapy: A Comprehensive Review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder leading to movement disorders including trembling, rigidity, and bradykinesia. The majority of these symptoms result from the death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Despite various pharmaceutical and surgical methods like levodopa treatment and neuromodulation being applied, none of them prevent the progression of PD. Various factors, both genetic and environmental (pesticides, head trauma, mitochondrial dysfunction), contribute to the development of this disease. Recent studies demonstrate the potential of

Detection of Latent Fingerprints with Simple AIE-Active p-Phenylenediamine Schiff Bases.

Detection of latent fingerprints (LFPs) is pivotal in recognizing the individuals involved in the crime. To achieve this, many attempts have been made to obtain highly sensitive fluorophores with low adhesiveness; however, this remains a challenge. The present research explores the synthesis and application of aggregation-induced emission active phenylenediamine-based Schiff bases 3a and 3b for latent fingerprint detection. The Schiff base, exhibiting enhanced fluorescence upon aggregation, demonstrates remarkable sensitivity and selectivity towards latent fingerprints. The synthesized compoun

New Triphenylamine-Based Oligomeric Schiff Bases Containing Tetraphenylsilane Moieties in the Backbone.

Three new triphenylamine-based oligomeric Schiff bases (polySB1, polySB2 and polySB3) containing tetraphenylsilane core (TPS-core) in the main chain were obtained from TPS-core-based diamines and bis(4-formylphenyl)phenylamine by a high-temperature polycondensation reaction. These new oligomers were structurally characterized by FT-IR, NMR and elemental analysis. All polySBs were highly soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran and chlorobenzene. Samples showed moderate molecular average molecular weight (Mw) and a high thermal stability above 410 °C. Likewise, po

Enhancing the Conjugation of Nickel(II) Schiff Bases for High-Contrast Electrochromism.

In this work, we elaborately designed two nickel(II) Schiff base complexes (NiL and NiL') with different π-conjugated systems (benzene vs. naphthalene) to prepare uniform metallopolymer films with nickel(II) chelates as repeating units on ITO substrates through oxidative electropolymerization. The π-conjugation extending from the benzene moiety to the naphthalene moiety greatly enhances the electron delocalization of the metallopolymer film, resulting in a significant increase in optical contrast from 25% ([NiL]n) to 80% ([NiL']n). The solid-state electrochromic devices based on metallopolymer

New Lead Schiff Bases Predominantly Mediate Vasorelaxant Activity Through α1 Receptor Blocking Activity.

Schiff bases synthesized in our laboratory have demonstrated pain-relieving effects through both peripheral and central nervous system pathways. Considering that centrally acting analgesics often affect the muscle tone of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and related deep internal organs, this study was conducted to examine potential relaxant effects on blood vessels and GIT smooth muscles. The possible relaxant effects of Schiff bases (SB1 and SB2) on isolated rabbit aortic strips were evaluated. The experiments involved assessing their impact on contractions induced by 80 mM potassium chlorid
