Two new protostane triterpenoids, schifoliusterpenes A and B (1 and 2), were isolated from the fruits of Schinus terebinthifolius. Their structures were elucidated by NMR, HRESIMS, DP4 probability analysis, and comparison with previously reported data. These new compounds were evaluated for α-glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition, nitric oxide (NO) suppression, and antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activities. Compound 1 was identified as an effective AChE inhibitor (IC50 31.3 μM), and 2 exhibited a significant effect in decreasing NO production (IC50 26.4 μM). Moderat

The increasing global importance of pink peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolia, Anacardiaceae) as a high-value commercial crop and its potential for expansion in production demand appropriate management due to uncertainties regarding its sexual system. This study focused on evaluating the morphology of sterile and fertile floral whorls, as well as analyzing the sexual system of pink pepper in two populations in northeastern Brazil. The results revealed no significant differences in the morphological characteristics of the flowers between the studied areas, suggesting that the species possesses n

Schinus lentiscifolius (Anacardiaceae) is widely used in folk medicine for treating gastrointestinal and emotional complaints but there are no scientific studies that support these uses. This work aims at evaluating the antispasmodic and central effects of S. lentiscifolius as well as the flavonoids presence in the tincture (SchT) and the composition of the essential oil (SchO). SchT inhibited the concentration-response curves (CRC) of carbachol and calcium in a non-competitive way in isolated rat intestine, bladder and uterus. SchT also non-competitively inhibited the CRC of histamine in guin

The rise of antibiotic resistance has necessitated a search for new antimicrobials with potent activity against multidrug-resistant gram-negative pathogens, such as carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB). In this study, a library of botanical extracts generated from plants used to treat infections in traditional medicine was screened for growth inhibition of CRAB. A crude extract of Schinus terebinthifolia leaves exhibited 80% inhibition at 256 µg/mL and underwent bioassay-guided fractionation, leading to the isolation of pentagalloyl glucose (PGG), a bioactive gallotannin. Leishmaniasis is caused by parasitic protozoans of the Leishmania genus and has been classified as a Neglected Tropical Disease. Control of this parasite relies mainly on chemotherapy; however, conventional available drugs are unsatisfactory. Phytomedicine, particularly essential oils, is a promising alternative. In this study, the chemical composition and antileishmanial properties of essential oil from leaves of Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (EO-St) were determined. Chemical components were identified by GC-MS. Antileishmanial activity on promastigotes of L. amazonensis was assayed, followed

The need for new medications to treat diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health concern due to the cost and impact on patients and their families, health systems, and society. Recent approaches in drug development have focused on multitarget therapy for DM, considering its multifactorial and complex pathophysiology. The present work contributes to the review of the plant species Schinus molle L. (pirul), a tropical tree native to South America but now widespread worldwide, which has demonstrated anticancer, analgesic, antibacterial, and insecticidal properties. According to traditional uses, p

BACKGROUND: Schinus molle L. (Anacardiaceae), the Andean "molle" or "mulli," is among the longest-used trees of western South America. Despite more than 3 decades of pharmacological research, reports remain heterogeneous and no reproducible phytopharmaceutical candidate has emerged-an inconsistency that may arise less from insufficient experimentation than from the biological object never having been adequately defined.
AIM: This article integrates the historical-linguistic, archaeological, ethnobotanical and taxonomic record and proposes a falsifiable framework-the Mulli Hypothesis-for how t

Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus are the primary bacteria that cause clinical infections, such as urinary and intestinal infections, pneumonia, endocarditis, and sepsis. Bacterial resistance is an innate natural occurrence in microorganisms, resulting from mutations or the lateral exchange of genetic material. This serves as evidence for the association between drug consumption and pathogen resistance. Evidence has demonstrated that the association between conventional antibiotics and natural products is a promising pharmacological strategy to overcome resist

Monoterpenes, pigments, lipid peroxidation products, sulfur and water content expressed as dry weight/fresh weight ratio were measured in leaves of Schinus areira L. collected in Mendoza, Argentina. The sampling sites showed different SO(2), NO(2) and PM(10) levels, which allowed setting out zones by mapping. Foliar chemical parameters in S. areira were analysed in relation to these zones. High hydroperoxy conjugated dienes (HPCD) and alpha-phellandrene content in foliar samples coming from areas with high SO(2) levels were measured. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed a positive associa
