The blood flukes of turtles (Digenea: Spirorchiidae) and the blood flukes of crocodilians, birds and mammals (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) have long been considered as closely related, but distinct evolutionary lineages. Recent morphological and molecular studies have considered these families as sister taxa within the Schistosomatoidea. Representatives of both families have similar furcocercous cercariae and similar two-host life cycles, but have different definitive hosts, distinct reproductive patterns and different morphologies. Sequences including approximately 1800 bases of the small subun

Due to the recrudescence of cercarial dermatitis in the world, larval Schistosomatidae have been researched during 20 months in gastropods of stagnant fresh waters in a wetland. Brevifurcate ocellate cercariae have been detected after crushing in a species of Physidae, Aplexa hypnorum, with a prevalence of 6.52%. Up to now, this species had never been found infected by larval trematodes. Lymnaeidae, Planorbidae and other Physidae didn't harbour schistosomatids. Cercariae of A. hypnorum present furcal fin-folds and the length of the tail stem is inferior to that of the body. Only cercariae of H

Cases of swimmer's itch caused by cercariae of the genus Trichobilharzia have spread during the last years in Southwestern Germany and increased in intensity. The only consequence was to forbid swimming because no effective strategies are known which would be ecologically or financially acceptable. In this examination we therefore tried, by means of medication of ducks, the possible final hosts, to kill the different stages of Trichobilharzia in patency and prepatency in order to interrupt the parasitic cycle. For this the effectiveness of praziquantel on the parasitic stages in the final host

Adult schistosomes were detected in the veins or capillaries of the large intestine, mesentery, liver, and adrenal glands in eight of 13 whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus) examined in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. However, neither eggs nor severe tissue injuries were observed in any of the swans. The schistosomes were definitively identified as Allobilharzia visceralis based on the nucleotide sequences of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Allobilharzia visceralis infections have been reported in whooper swan in Iceland and tundra swan (Cygnus columbianus) in North America. These de

IMPORTANCE: Avian schistosomes are important wildlife parasites, but their presence in the Republic of Korea has not been documented in the peer-reviewed literature. Documenting new host and geographic records is essential for understanding the parasite distribution and host-parasite interactions.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the morphology of schistosomes recovered from a Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus) and determine their taxonomic identity.
METHODS: Two male schistosomes were recovered from the aorta of a Whooper Swan during a necropsy. The specimens were fixed, stained with Semichon's acetocarmin

Trichobilharzia is a genus of threadlike schistosomes with a cosmopolitan distribution in birds. Species of Trichobilharzia achieve notoriety as major etiological agents of cercarial dermatitis, or swimmer's itch. There are 40 species described in the literature, for which the majority lacks molecular sequence information. To better understand the phylogenetic relationships, diversity, species boundaries, host use, and geographic distribution of this genus better, we surveyed 378 birds and over 10,000 snails from North America. The phylogenetic analysis was based on nuclear 18S, 28S rDNA, inte

In Iceland, the examination of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus L.) viscera resulted in the detection of adult digenean flukes of the family Schistosomatidae. The mature worms occurring in the blood vessels of the large intestine and mesenterium caused vascular lesions, around the eggs deposited in the intestinal mucosa and liver granulomatous reactions developed. The morphology of the isolated schistosomes shows certain similarity with the flukes of the genus Trichobilharzia; in males reduced gynecophoral canal, and on both sexes both suckers and spatulate ends are present. However, the Icelandic

Adult Trichobilharzia physellae were recovered from the liver and mesenteric veins of green-winged teal, Anas creca, blue-winged teal, A. discors, and pintail, A. acuta, breeding on the High Plains of Texas. Wild ducks naturally-infected with these schistosomes were emaciated with mild to severe atrophy of the breast musculature. The liver was considerably enlarged, pale and somewhat friable. Numerous viable and dead T. physellae were recovered from the cut surface. On histologic examination, viable adult schistosomes were observed in the portal veins and dead, partly calcified T. physellae we

Schistosome infections in mammals cause chronic proliferative vascular lesions associated with the presence of adult parasites in the lumen of mesenteric and portal veins. In birds, however, this has never been reported. In this study, we found obliterative endophlebitis associated with the presence of adult schistosomes (Trichobilharzia sp., probably Trichobilharzia filiformis) as the main pathologic finding in five of eight mute swans (Cygnus olor). On histologic examination, the intestinal and portal veins of these swans showed moderate to severe, diffuse, hyperplastic endophlebitis, charac

A 63-year-old woman developed a pruritic exanthema on the extremities after one hour of work in her garden pond in Planegg, Southern Bavaria. As the appropriate vectors (ducks and snails) were present, we made the tentative diagnosis of cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch). By different serological methods (cercarial fluorescent antibody test, cercarial Hüllen reaction, circumoval precipitin test) antibodies against cercariae could be demonstrated in the serum of the patient 14 days later. Cercarial dermatitis appears worldwide, but in Central Europe the disease is often not recognized.

In the epidemiology of schistosomiasis, the cercarial index (CI) has been used for several purposes, including the identification of the species of vertebrate host involved in transmission in a particular setting. The CI of samples of Schistosoma mansoni of human (BH) and rodent (CMO) origin have now been compared, in an attempt to identify morphological markers on cercariae that would indicate whether the eggs from which the cercariae have developed were produced in humans or in rodents. After silver-nitrate impregnation of the cercariae, the CI (and their reaction norms) for the antero-dorsa

Maturation and maintenance of normal reproductive function in female Schistosoma mansoni require a permanent association with the male, but the nature of this relationship is not well understood. The regional localization of a stimulatory factor in the male and its target in the female were investigated. Unisexual female and mature male worms were transected into segments of various lengths. Various combinations of transected male and female segments and intact worms were transferred to the mesenteric veins of recipient hamsters and were also maintained in vitro. In hamsters and in vitro, pair

Schistosomes, which live as parasitic adults in the blood vessels of mammals, birds and crocodiles, are unique among trematodes because they have separate sexes. Several studies have shown that the sex ratio is often biased towards males. Sexual dimorphism can be very important in several genera (Schistosoma, Heterobilharzia, Schistosomatium), as larger males grip smaller females in a gynecophoric canal. But not all schistomatid species have developed a gynecophoric canal. It is also striking that the number of testes varies widely, from a small number of testes reported (2-7) to a very high n

Avian schistosomatids are blood flukes parasitizing a wide spectrum of aquatic birds. However, its research in the Neotropics is ongoing with several putative new taxa pending description. Although waterfowl represent the most important avian hosts for these flukes, only a small proportion of these birds have been assessed for schistosomatids. This study aimed to describe avian schistosomatids from two native ducks from the Southern Cone of South America. A total of 24 Chiloe wigeon (Mareca sibilatrix) and three Cinnamon teals (Spatula cyanoptera) from different localities in Chile and Argenti

Helminth neuroinfections represent serious medical conditions, but the diversity of the host-parasite interplay within the nervous tissue often remains poorly understood, partially due to the lack of laboratory models. Here, we investigated the neuroinvasion of the mouse spinal cord by Trichobilharzia regenti (Schistosomatidae). Active migration of T. regenti schistosomula through the mouse spinal cord induced motor deficits in hindlimbs but did not affect the general locomotion or working memory. Histological examination of the infected spinal cord revealed eosinophilic meningomyelitis with e

The molecular approach was used to identify the first focus of human cercarial dermatitis occurring during the spring-summer season in Vico Lake, a Natural Reserve Area in Central Italy. Sequences of 586 bp length of the partial region of 18S and ITS-1 ribosomal DNA from cercariae were obtained. They were compared with extant GenBank sequences of Trichobilharzia. Accordingly, the ocellate furcocercariae were identified as belonging to the species Trichobilharzia franki Müller and Kimmig, 1994. Sequences of the 18S (712 bp) and ITS-2 (218 bp) rDNA gene of snails belonging to the family Lymnaeid

The invasive larvae (cercariae) of schistosomes penetrate the skin of their definitive hosts. During the invasion, they undergo dramatic ultrastructural and physiological transitions. These changes result in the development of the subsequent stage, schistosomulum, which migrates through host tissues in close contact with host's immune system. One of the striking changes in the transforming cercariae is the shedding of their thick tegumental glycocalyx, which represents an immunoattractive structure; therefore its removal helps cercariae to avoid immune attack. A set of commercial fluorescently

Migration of parasitic worms through the host tissues, which may occasionally result in fatal damage to the internal organs, represents one of the major risks associated with helminthoses. In order to track the parasites, traditionally used 2D imaging techniques such as histology or squash preparation do not always provide sufficient data to describe worm location/behavior in the host. On the other hand, 3D imaging methods are widely used in cell biology, medical radiology, osteology or cancer research, but their use in parasitological research is currently occasional. Thus, we aimed at the ev

Migratory waterfowl play an important role in the maintenance and spread of zoonotic diseases worldwide. An example is cercarial dermatitis, caused when larval stages of schistosomes that normally develop in birds penetrate human skin. Members of the genus Trichobilharzia (Schistosomatidae), transmitted mainly by ducks, are considered to be major etiological agents of cercarial dermatitis globally. To better understand the diversity and distribution of Trichobilharzia spp., we surveyed ducks from the United States, eastern Canada, Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand. To aid in species iden

Trichobilharzia Skrjabin & Zakharov, 1920 is known as the most species-rich genus of the blood fluke family Schistosomatidae. To date, more than 40 species have been described, even though validity of some of them is questionable (Horák et al. 2002). Members of the genus use various birds as final hosts, but they attract attention mostly as causative agents of hypersensitive skin reaction (cercarial dermatitis or swimmer's itch) in mammals including humans. As this is one of the.
