Differential language characteristics in adult aphasic and schizophrenic subjects.

Sixty-one adult aphasic and 61 noncerebrally involved chronic undifferentiated schizophrenic subjects were tested for impairment in 10 language categories. Results indicated that the language categories of strongest differentiating value were writing of words to dictation, naming, syntax, where aphasic subjects were more impaired in all three, and relevance, where schizophrenic subjects were more impaired. To a lesser extent, other differentiating language features were auditory retention span, and overall language ability, where aphasic subjects were more impaired in both, and fluency, where

[Markers of schizophrenic language. A comparative patholinguistic study of dialogues with schizophrenic, manic, depressive and brain-damaged patients].

Transcripts of dialogues with patients showing schizophrenic, manic, depressive or organic syndromes, 15 persons in each group, were analyzed in order to determine their degree of cohesion and coherence. The cohesion of a text is defined by the grammatical and lexical relation between its elements. Coherence, however, means that the sequence of sentences appears reasonable in the context of communicative action. There is a significantly higher incidence of incoherences in dialogues with schizophrenic patients than in dialogues with patients who show manic, depressive or organic syndromes. Schi

Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia: a study of the validity of a French-language version in a population of schizophrenic patients.

The Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) is a nine-item structured interview scale developed by Addington et al. to assess depression in schizophrenics. This paper describes the testing of the reliability and validity of the French version of the CDSS in a population of 70 schizophrenic patients. The validity of the CDSS as a measure of depression was confirmed; a single factor accounted for 41% of the variance of the nine items. The total score on the CDSS was strongly correlated with those on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), the Hamilton Depression Rating S

P600 alteration of syntactic language processing in patients with bipolar mania: Comparison to schizophrenic patients and healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in thought, speech, and linguistic processing are frequently observed in bipolar manic patients, but the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are not well understood. P600 is a distinct, positive event-related potential component elicited by syntactic violations. Using the P600 ERP, we examined neural processing of syntactic language comprehension in patients with bipolar mania compared to patients with schizophrenia and healthy people. METHOD: P600s were recorded from 21 manic patients with bipolar disorder, 26 patients with schizophrenia, and 29 healthy subjects

The SSQ model of schizophrenic prodromal unfolding revised: an analysis of its causal chains based on the language of directed graphs.

OBJECTIVE: Except in broad outline, little is known about the most likely symptomatic trajectories in prodromal schizophrenia. The aim of this study is to delineate these pathways. METHODS: Taking into account existing clinical knowledge, the causal relationships between the 12 prodrome scales of the Schizotypic Syndrome Questionnaire (SSQ) were examined in a general-population sample by applying the mathematical theory of directed graphs. Use was made of two discovery algorithms implemented in the Tetrad-4 program, as well as of the graphical DAGitty program to test whether a particular mode

Patterns of dysfunction in schizophrenic patients on an aphasia test battery.

Twenty-seven schizophrenic patients free of any known neurologic deficit were tested with an aphasia test battery. The objective of the research was to derive a profile of schizophrenic language performance to permit its comparison with the profiles characteristic of aphasia, apraxia of speech, generalized intellectual impairment, and confused language. Results indicate that schizophrenic patients exhibit a profile of language performance distinctive from those found in aphasia, apraxia of speech, confusion, or generalized intellectual impairment and demonstrate that the disruption of language

A study of thought disorder in paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia.

Thought disorder was studied in 21 paranoid and 24 non-paranoid schizophrenics fulfilling the research diagnostic criteria using the Thought, Language and Communication Scale. Chronic paranoid schizophrenics more often had tangentiality. Other thought disorders were similar in paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenics.

A comparative study of manic vs schizophrenic speech disorganization.

Recent studies have indicated that thought disorder occurs among manics at least to the same degree as among schizophrenics. The present study assumes that thought disorder can be considered as an abnormality of language whereby listeners are unable to organize speech into a single, coherent "whole." A model of language processing is presented that predicts that the incoherence of manic speech is due to shifts from one coherent discourse structure to another, while the ability of schizophrenic speakers to construct any discourse structure is deficient. A discourse analysis was applied to norma

Cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia, affective disorder and organic brain disease.

We used the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) to study a sample of patients with affective disorder (N = 52), schizophrenia (N = 17) and organic brain disease (N = 8). Schizophrenic patients had lower verbal, performance and full-scale IQs than patients with affective disorder, but were no different from those with organic brain disease. An individual WAIS subscale analysis showed that, compared with affectives, schizophrenics had relatively poorer performance on language than non-language tasks. These differences were independent of age, sex, handedness, educational level or drug admin

Schizophrenics show a failure in the decoding of violations of conversational implicatures.

OBJECTIVES: Recent approaches to the 'theory of mind' and pragmatics support that, if we did not have any idea about what other people know, we could hardly use language effectively. Successful communication (the pragmatic aspect of language) depends on inferring the beliefs and intentions of the partner in the conversation. Such successful communication is linguistically realized in part by cohesion and in part by abiding by the maxims derived from the cooperative principle. However, the violations of the Gricean implicatures are generally used in everyday language, mainly to point at a hidde

Schizophrenia: Communication Disorders and Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist.

PURPOSE: This clinical focus article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of schizophrenia and understanding of communication disorders resulting from its psychopathology. Schizophrenia is a spectrum disorder with varying levels of symptom expression. It is characterized by positive and negative symptoms that can cause communication disorders of different severity levels. Communication difficulties manifest as a range of symptoms such as alogia, disorganized speech, and impaired social communication. These challenges may result in receptive and expressive language deficits that lead to mis

Abnormal speech perception in schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: The neurobiological mechanism of auditory hallucination (AH) in schizophrenia remains elusive, but AH can be caused by the abnormality in the speech perception system based on the speech perception neural network model. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether schizophrenic patients with AH have the speech processing impairment as compared with schizophrenic patients without AH, and whether the speech perception ability could be improved after AH had subsided. METHODS: Twenty-four schizophrenic patients with AH were compared with 25 schizophrenic patients

Association between FOXP2 polymorphisms and schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations.

OBJECTIVE: A mutation in the FOXP2 gene has been the first genetic association with a language disorder. Language disorder is considered as a core symptom of schizophrenia. Therefore, the FOXP2 gene could be considered a good candidate gene for the vulnerability to schizophrenia. METHODS: A set of single nucleotide polymorphisms mainly located in the 5' regulatory region of the FOXP2 gene was analysed in a sample of 186 DSM-IV schizophrenic patients with auditory hallucinations and in 160 healthy controls. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in the genotype (P=0.007) and allele fr

Stability and prediction of schizophrenia from adolescence to adulthood.

Stability of schizophrenia diagnosis from adolescence to adulthood, antecedents of schizophrenia, and differences in developmental and behavioural histories between subjects with early onset schizophrenia (EOS) and with adult onset schizophrenia (AOS) were investigated in 145 adult subjects diagnosed with mental disorders in adolescence and re-diagnosed on the basis of medical records according to DSM-IV.A very high diagnostic stability schizophrenia was demonstrated at the 28-year follow-up. Several factors, including neurological adversities, delayed language development, low IQ, and congeni

Dichotic listening in schizophrenic patients: effects of previous vs. ongoing auditory hallucinations.

Auditory hallucinations (AH) in schizophrenia have been found to be related to both functional and structural brain abnormalities of left temporal lobe language areas. We do not know if these rain abnormalities are state or trait markers for AH. This study tested these alternatives by contrasting schizophrenic patients with ongoing AH and with a previous history of AH. A heterogeneous group of 26 schizophrenic patients was compared with a healthy control group matched for education and age. We used a verbal dichotic listening (DL) test with consonant-vowel syllables to study hemispheric asymme

Asymmetries in the superior temporal lobe in male and female first-episode schizophrenic patients: measures of the planum temporale and superior temporal gyrus by MRI.

Schizophrenia has been hypothesized to be associated with an underlying brain developmental anomaly, specifically affecting normal brain asymmetries. The most pronounced asymmetries are present on the superior surface of the temporal lobes, the left plane, as measured along the sylvian fissure (planum temporale) being longer than the right in the majority of normal individuals. These asymmetries encompass Wernicke's area, the anatomical substrate for language, and have been found to be less pronounced in individuals with developmental language problems, i.e. dyslexia. Since disordered language

Prelingually profoundly deaf schizophrenic patients who hear voices: a phenomenological analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study were to examine claims that profoundly deaf schizophrenic patients report auditory hallucinations, and to evaluate proposed explanations that such patients are really describing other symptoms, or that the phenomenon is restricted to those who had heard and understood language prior to becoming deaf. METHOD: A total of 17 schizophrenic/schizoaffective patients with onset of profound deafness prior to the age of 2 years underwent structured psychiatric interview. RESULTS: Ten patients (59%) gave accounts of verbal auditory hallucinations with description of co

Stick the needle into yourself before you thrust the packing-needle into others: Bibliometric analysis of the stigmatizing term 'schizophrenic'.

BACKGROUND: The term 'schizophrenic' can be used in society for the purpose of insult and humiliation. In scientific studies, it can often be used to refer to individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, although this is not intentional. This usage leads to the normalization and spread of stigmatizing language. In this study, bibliometric analysis of publications containing the term 'schizophrenic' was performed. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Articles published between 2005 and 2024 that contained the term 'schizophrenic' were retrieved from the Web of Science database. Characteristics of the articles (

The effect of context during word perception in schizophrenic patients.

Hospitalized chronic and acute schizophrenics were compared with age- and social-status-matched controls on word perception tests to measure the effect of context on recognition thresholds. In Experiment 1 the method of J. Morton (1964, British Journal of Psychology, 55, 165-180) was adopted to see how related and unrelated contexts influenced word recognition thresholds when both context and stimulus word were presented visually. Experiment 2 was an auditory analog of Experiment 1 and in addition the chronic schizophrenics were selected on the basis of a presence or absence of auditory halluc
