The authors examined the symptoms of 35 patients with schizotypal personality disorder. In contrast to the suggestion, based on studies of nonclinical, familial samples, that patients with schizotypal disorder are best characterized by the negative symptoms of social isolation and impaired functioning, they found that the positive symptoms of odd communication, ideas of reference, magical thinking, and illusions were equally valid discriminators of their clinically based group of patients. The findings argue against the idea that schizotypal personality disorder be redefined in the revision of

Two studies examined the relation between psychological trauma and schizotypal symptoms. In Study 1, in which 1,510 adults completed telephone interviews, both childhood maltreatment and the experience of an injury or life-threatening event were significantly associated with schizotypal symptoms. In Study 2, in which 303 adults (oversampled for having elevated levels of schizotypal symptoms) completed extensive in-person assessments, both childhood maltreatment and meeting posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Criterion A were significantly associated with schizotypal symptoms. Increased schizotypal traits have previously been associated with atypical semantic cognition in community samples. However, no study has yet examined whether adults diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) display atypical semantic fluency and memory. We hypothesized that 24 adults diagnosed with SPD would name more idiosyncratic words on the semantic fluency task and show decreased semantic recall for animal and fruit category words compared with 29 participants with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and a community sample of 96 age-matched controls. We examined whether atyp

A 20-year-old man was admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit for self-professed dissociative identity disorder. His presentation of multiple personalities without amnesia, dissociation or depersonalisation led to further examination of personality and cultural factors that may contribute to this uncommon presentation. Careful clinical investigation supported a diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder with elements of fantastical thinking influenced by media presentations of dissociative identity disorder.

BACKGROUND: The concept of schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) emerged from observations of personality characteristics common in relatives of schizophrenic patients. While often studied in family designs, few studies and none with genetic measures, have examined SPD in epidemiological samples.
METHODS: We studied individuals born in Sweden 1940-2000 with an ICD-10 diagnosis of SPD with no prior schizophrenia (SZ) diagnosis (n = 2292). Demographic features, patterns of comorbidity, and Family Genetic Risk Scores (FGRS) were assessed from multiple Swedish registries. Prediction of progressi

Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) first appeared in the American Psychiatric Association diagnostic nosology in 1980, although its roots stretch back more than 100 years under labels such as borderline, ambulatory, and latent schizophrenia. SPD is unique in that it is conceptualized both as stable personality pathology and also as a milder manifestation of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology. The categorical operationalization of SPD has remained largely unchanged for the last 40 years, with emphasis on interpersonal deficits, cognitive and perceptual distortions, and odd and eccentric

The P300 response to an auditory two-tone discrimination task has previously been reported to have prolonged latency and reduced amplitude in schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. In this study, P300 was recorded from 23 subjects with borderline personality disorder, 12 subjects fulfilling criteria for both borderline and schizotypal personality, and 11 subjects with schizotypal personality. The mean P300 latency was similar in each of these groups and was significantly longer than in 32 patients with neuroses and other personality disorders and 74 nonpatient controls. These findi

Schizophrenic patients and patients with schizotypal personality disorder were significantly more likely than normal controls to demonstrate impaired eye tracking performance. Fifteen of 27 schizophrenics and 15 of 27 schizotypals had impaired eye tracking, compared with 11 of 39 normal controls. In the schizophrenic group, including 10 out-patients in a stable state of relative remission, impaired eye tracking was associated with more severe formal thought disorder and more time spent in psychiatric hospitals. Among stable schizophrenic out-patients, poor eye tracking was related to more seve

OBJECTIVE: To establish the functional activity of pseudoallergy sets of symptom complexes manifesting as a part of the schizotypal personality disorder.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study sample included 23 cases with manifestations resembling the clinical presentation of allergic dermatoses and skin symptoms of allergic diseases with no signs of somatic-related allergic sets of symptoms (medical history/laboratory studies). The patients were examined using clinical, laboratory, and psychometric methods followed by statistical data processing.
RESULTS: There are two types of functional activit

Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is classified in DSM-V as a cluster A personality disorder. Cluster A personality disorders are described as odd or eccentric conditions. SPD is associated with significant disability and many psychiatric comorbidities. Several studies have shown that SPD and schizotypal traits are associated with suicidal ideation and behaviour. Suicide prevention interventions in individuals with SPD are impeded because (1) SPD is frequently not diagnosed; (2) SPD is difficult to treat; and (3) there are no guidelines for suicide screening or suicide prevention interven

The investigation of cognitive deficits in patients with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is important both to establish commonalities between SPD and schizophrenia and to clarify the significance of these cognitive deficits for schizophrenic disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine verbal learning and memory with the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) in a group of patients with SPD (n=24) and a group of patients with personality disorders other than SPD (OPD; n=25). The results indicated that SPD patients learned significantly fewer words with practice on the CVLT than O

Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) resembles schizophrenia, but with attenuated brain abnormalities and the absence of psychosis. The thalamus is integral for processing and transmitting information across cortical regions and widely implicated in the neurobiology of schizophrenia. Comparing thalamic connectivity in SPD and schizophrenia could reveal an intermediate schizophrenia-spectrum phenotype to elucidate neurobiological risk and protective factors in psychosis. We used rsfMRI to investigate functional connectivity between the mediodorsal nucleus (MDN) and pulvinar, and their connect

RATIONALE: Previous research has suggested that schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), a condition that shares clinical and cognitive features with schizophrenia, may be associated with elevated striatal dopamine functioning; however, there are no published studies of dopamine release within subregions of the striatum in SPD.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize dopamine release capacity in striatal subregions and its relation to clinical and cognitive features in SPD.
METHODS: We used positron emission tomography with [11C]raclopride and an amphetamine challenge to measure dopamine D2-receptor avai

Structural prefrontal deficits have been reported in patients with schizophrenia, but it is unclear if they are also found in patients with schizophrenia spectrum personality disorders. The hypothesis that a spectrum group will be characterized by prefrontal structural deficits was tested by assessing prefrontal gray and white volumes using magnetic resonance imaging in a community sample of 16 individuals with schizotypal/paranoid personality disorder, 27 comparisons, and 26 psychiatric controls. Frontal neurocognitive functioning was also assessed using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and th

IMPORTANCE: Exploration of the ability to process socially relevant events portrayed by biological motion and to identify underlying neuronal processes can provide clues for understanding the pathophysiology of psychosis. Individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) have pervasive interpersonal deficits and odd behaviors. An understanding of the neural mechanisms involved in the perception of biological motion and the relation of activity to clinical symptoms in those mechanisms is needed.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the specificity of brain regions responsive to biological motion pe

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether the electrophysiological correlates of language processing found previously to be abnormal in schizophrenia are also abnormal in schizotypal individuals. The authors used the N400 component to evaluate language dysfunction in schizotypal individuals.
METHOD: Event-related potentials were recorded in 16 comparison subjects and 17 schizotypal individuals (who met full DSM-III-R criteria) to sentences presented both visually and aurally; half of the sentences ended with an expected word completion (congruent condition), and the other half ended with an unex

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and disabling mental disorder characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions that cause major distress and impair important areas of functioning. About 9 out of 10 patients with OCD have comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. A high proportion of clinically diagnosed OCD patients fulfill diagnostic criteria of a schizophrenia spectrum disorder, to the point that significant evidence in the literature supports the existence and the clinical relevance of a schizo-obsessive spectrum of disorders, including schizotypal personality disorder

Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is a serious and relatively common psychiatric disorder, yet remains understudied among the personality disorders. The current study examines the psychiatric correlates of SPD in a representative epidemiologic sample, utilizing data from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (N = 34,653). Multiple logistic regression compared people with SPD to the general population across a broad range of childhood adversities, comorbid psychiatric disorders, and suicidal behavior. SPD was strongly associated with many adverse childhood e

BACKGROUND: Treatment of schizotypal personality disorder is complex. Currently, there are no clear evidence-based recommendations for use of psychotherapy for individuals suffering from this mental illness, and studies are sparse. Our aim in this review is to map and describe the existing research and to answer the research question: What do we know about the use of psychotherapy for people with schizotypal personality disorder?
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using systematic searches in the Embase, MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases. Two reviewers screened possible studies and extracted
