[School health services in Norway--rise and fall].

Professional interest in school hygiene and in the health of the pupils developed in Europe towards the middle of the 19th century. In Norway, professional discussion started with two lengthy debates in the Norwegian Medical Society in Oslo in 1866 and 1868. An important issue was the possible overburdening of the pupils with school work. Some private schools had their school doctor at that time, while public schools had to wait until 1896 or later before they got a school doctor. As head of the school health service in Oslo 1918-32 and professor of hygiene 1932-38, Carl Schiøtz had a dominant

Role of the School Nurse in Providing School Health Services: Policy Statement.

School nursing has evolved into an essential field bridging health care and education. School nurses play multifaceted roles, addressing direct care, care coordination, public health, leadership, and quality improvement. They manage communicable diseases, chronic conditions, mental health, and emergencies while promoting safe, equitable learning environments. Collaboration with pediatricians enhances outcomes for students, families, and communities by addressing shared challenges like the rising prevalence of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), mental health concerns, a

Support for Offering Sexual Health Services Through School-Based Health Clinics.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies document support for sexuality education in the schools. However, there is a dearth of research assessing support for sexual health services offered through school-based health clinics (SBHCs). The purpose of this study was to assess voter support for offering 3 sexual health services (STI/HIV testing, STI/HIV treatment, condom distribution) through SBHCs. METHODS: The survey was developed after review of existing surveys on support for sexuality education and sexual health services. The university's Public Opinion Research Laboratory used random-digit-dialing to

Amplifying Advocacy for Student Health and School Nursing Services.

Annually, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) sets advocacy goals, including legislative and policy priorities. Activities this past year continued to focus on assistance for school nurses to manage the ongoing pandemic by providing for additional school nurses and supplies. In addition, NASN advocated for legislation to provide grants for school nurses in Title 1 schools, to reduce tobacco use, and to address social determinants of health. This article provides a brief summary of NASN's 2021-2022 national advocacy efforts.

[Tuberculosis screening in school health services in Geneva, Switzerland].

Recent immigrantyouth have multiple health needs that need to be adapted to the context of migration. School health services provide a systematic health check to allyoung immigrants starting school in Geneva, including a tuberculin skin test if coming from a middle or high incidence country. Positive tests are confirmed with Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) and if indicated, offered treatment of latent tuberculosis even in the absence of clear guidelines. Collective and individual benefits outweigh the difficult logistics: reducing risk of reactivation of latent tuberculosis for populatio

Receipt of school health education and school health service among adolescent immigrants in Massachusetts.

This study assessed whether immigrant adolescents receive health education and services in schools at levels comparable to native-born peers. Surveys from 2,635 8th and 10th graders allowed comparisons between students living in the United States "always" (n = 2,080), "more than six years" (n = 299), and "six years or less" (n = 191). Immigrant students were equally likely to receive health education, more likely to use peer counseling or support groups (p < .001), and less likely to use health services (p < .05). They communicated more often with staff (p < .05), were more concerned about men

Decreasing Asthma-Related Health and Educational Inequity Through School-Based Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood and is a driver of significant health and educational inequity. Despite research demonstrating that school-based asthma interventions can improve health and educational outcomes and advance equity, calls to shift the field to a dissemination and implementation focus have gone largely unanswered. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: Building upon the foundation of Charles Basch's 2011 "Healthier Students are Better Learners" framework, we summarize relevant findings from the recent literature on school-based asthma interventions. Mental health care in a high school based health service.

This paper describes the mental health services provided at a high school based health center that integrates mental health and medical services. Five years after the inception of the center in 1988, mental health visits had quadrupled. In 1992 alone, students made 1,002 mental health visits. Strikingly, one-third of these students reported problematic substance use among other family members. Other leading reasons for utilizing mental health services included pregnancy (19%), past or present suicidal ideation (14%), obesity (8.7%), ongoing depression (8%), and issues related to sexuality (7.5

Sexual Behaviors, Referral to Sexual Health Services, and Use of Sexual Health Services Among Transgender High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Transgender adolescents are at increased risk for negative sexual health outcomes compared to their cisgender peers. METHODS: Using data from 10,231 students from 7 high schools in a large, urban school district, our analysis compared sexual behaviors, referral to sexual health services by school staff, and use of sexual health services between transgender and cisgender students. We used propensity score matching to create a comparable sample of transgender and cisgender students and logistic regression models to examine how gender identity was associated with aforementioned outco

Assessing the State of Mental Health Services in U.S. School-Based Health Centers.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rise in mental health issues among adolescents. School-based health centers (SBHCs) aim to improve access to health care, including mental health services. METHODS: This study examines the degree to which schools provide mental health programming and the role of SBHCs in particular, guided by the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model. Data from the 2022 School Health Profiles Principal Questionnaire were analyzed for this study. RESULTS: Schools with SBHCs offered more mental health services than those without. Specifically, schools

Editorial: The Value of and Need for School Mental Health Services.

The United States has an overburdened and fragmented mental health services system. Because of challenges in accessing care, the needs of most adolescents experiencing psychiatric disorders go unmet.1 Schools play an important role in filling gaps in services and, for many youth, schools are the first-and often the only-point of access for mental health services. School-based mental health services are particularly important for adolescents in low-income families or living in urban neighborhoods, who, because of social and structural factors, are more likely to report psychiatric symptoms and

Support for school-based reproductive health services among South Carolina voters.

In 1997 a statewide random digit-dialed telephone survey of 534 South Carolina registered voters was conducted to determine level of support for school-based reproductive health services. Results indicated most voters supported services in secondary schools that would provide students with information and counseling about contraceptive methods and refer students to community-based agencies for abstinence education and counseling. Voters were less supportive of reproductive health services that would diagnose or treat sexually transmitted diseases, test for pregnancy, refer students to communit

Adolescent utilization of school based mental health services in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Over 14 million adolescents have a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder yet only 20% receive adequate mental health services. There is a critical need to identify accessible and effective pathways to treatment. School based mental health services (SBMHS) are an optimal setting for timely identification, effective management, and convenient delivery of evidence-based mental health care. METHODS: Using data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we employed structural equation modeling to examine the relationships between utilization of SBMHS and scho

[Children's daycare and schools-a challenge for local health services in the pandemic].

Local public health services in Germany usually include a local organizational unit that is in charge of the healthcare of children, youths, and families (KJGD). Major tasks are defined in the federal laws for the public health service emphasizing different types of activities in daycare units, schools, and community living environments. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the activities of the KJGD have clearly changed. This article will provide a review of these tasks during the pandemic on the basis of interviews with KJGD administrations in 11 communities of the federal state Nor
