This paper describes the mental health services provided at a high school based health center that integrates mental health and medical services. Five years after the inception of the center in 1988, mental health visits had quadrupled. In 1992 alone, students made 1,002 mental health visits. Strikingly, one-third of these students reported problematic substance use among other family members. Other leading reasons for utilizing mental health services included pregnancy (19%), past or present suicidal ideation (14%), obesity (8.7%), ongoing depression (8%), and issues related to sexuality (7.5

The United States has an overburdened and fragmented mental health services system. Because of challenges in accessing care, the needs of most adolescents experiencing psychiatric disorders go unmet.1 Schools play an important role in filling gaps in services and, for many youth, schools are the first-and often the only-point of access for mental health services. School-based mental health services are particularly important for adolescents in low-income families or living in urban neighborhoods, who, because of social and structural factors, are more likely to report psychiatric symptoms and

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rise in mental health issues among adolescents. School-based health centers (SBHCs) aim to improve access to health care, including mental health services.
METHODS: This study examines the degree to which schools provide mental health programming and the role of SBHCs in particular, guided by the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model. Data from the 2022 School Health Profiles Principal Questionnaire were analyzed for this study.
RESULTS: Schools with SBHCs offered more mental health services than those without. Specifically, schools

BACKGROUND: Over 14 million adolescents have a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder yet only 20% receive adequate mental health services. There is a critical need to identify accessible and effective pathways to treatment. School based mental health services (SBMHS) are an optimal setting for timely identification, effective management, and convenient delivery of evidence-based mental health care.
METHODS: Using data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we employed structural equation modeling to examine the relationships between utilization of SBMHS and scho

OBJECTIVE: Delivering mental health services to children and their families through schools has many potential advantages. However, little is known about the characteristics of children referred to such services. This study aimed to determine the pattern of mental health and learning difficulties of children referred to one school mental health service.
METHODS: An identity stripped administrative database of all new referrals (n=353) to a school mental health program in southern Alberta between September 2006 and June 2009 was used. Teacher Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire responses

Access to needed mental health services can be particularly difficult for newly arrived refugee and asylum-seeking adolescents, although many attend school. This study examined young refugees' impressions and experience of mental health services integrated within the school system. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 adolescent refugees discharged by three school-based mental health services across the United Kingdom. Two-thirds preferred to be seen at school. Rumination and worry about insecurity in the asylum process had a negative impact particularly on the adolescents' social

Objectives Elementary school-aged children referred to school-based mental health services for conduct problems are commonly also prescribed central nervous system stimulants (CNSS), since many also suffer from comorbid ADHD. Nevertheless, there exists little information in the extant literature to determine to what degree the prescription of CNSS is associated with the presence of ADHD in these students or if other characteristics contribute to increasing the likelihood of CNSS use. Methods The current study was carried out on a sample of 341 students receiving school-based mental health servi

Given the concerns raised regarding the effects of prenatal exposure to methadone and buprenorphine on the developmental outcomes of the children, this study assessed mental health and use of services in a national sample of school-aged children (N = 78) born to women enrolled in opioid maintenance treatment during pregnancy, compared with a group of foster children (N = 140). The majority of the opioid-exposed children lived with their birth parent(s) at the time of assessment (N = 62), while 16 lived in foster homes. Caregivers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and

Adolescent mental health is a growing concern in the United States. Promoting health equity through addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) is a national priority and aligns with the Social Work Grand Challenge to "close the health gap." School-based mental health services (SBMHS) provide interdisciplinary support to enhance students' emotional, behavioral, and social functioning. This study analyzed data from 12th-grade participants in the 2022 and 2023 Monitoring the Future surveys-an annual, nationally representative, cross-sectional study-to (a) identify SDOH associated with depres

This article describes the development and implementation of a rural consortium of school-based programs for early detection and prevention of maladjustment. The program expanded considerably the reach of early services to young children. It also stimulated communication, interaction and support among professionals in participating districts. Program evaluation data provided evidence of its efficacy. Extensions of the consortium model to other rural districts are reported and the utility of the approach for addressing the mental health problems of children in under-resourced rural school distr

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on demographic and socioeconomic differences in adolescent mental health service use across multiple healthcare settings is vital for equitable health policy and service responses. We quantified inequalities in referrals to National Health Service (NHS)-funded mental health services and NHS hospital use for mental health concerns by social strata for secondary school pupils in England.
METHODS: We used linked education-health records (ECHILD) to create a cohort of pupils entering state-funded secondary schools in England (age 11 years/year 7) from 2012/13 to 2021/22. We

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the paper was to describe referrals to a UK school-based mental health service for children and adolescents.
METHODS: Children and young people (CYP) (N = 485, aged 4-18) were referred to two Mental Health Support Team sites in the South of England in 2021, for CBT-informed interventions for mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression. Child and parent reported outcome measures were completed pre-intervention, including measures of symptom severity and impact.
RESULTS: Referrals consisted of 61% female, 57% secondary school age (12-18 years old) and 81% White British. Chil

BACKGROUND: Secondary schools have attempted to address gaps in help-seeking for mental health problems with little success. This trial evaluated the effectiveness of a universal web-based service (Smooth Sailing) for improving help-seeking intentions for mental health problems and other related outcomes among students.
METHODS: A cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the 12-week outcomes of the Smooth Sailing service among 1841 students from 22 secondary schools in New South Wales, Australia. Assignment was conducted at the school level. The control condition received

Asian American adults endorse more symptoms of social anxiety (SA) on self-report measures than European Americans, but demonstrate lower prevalence rates of SA disorder in epidemiological studies. These divergent results create ambiguity concerning the mental health needs of Asian Americans. The present study is the first to investigate this issue in adolescents through assessment of self-reported SA in Asian American high school students. Parent and self-ratings of impairment related to SA and self-reported mental health service use for SA were also measured. Asian American students endorsed

PURPOSE: Schools provide access to mental health services for traditionally underserved youth. However, there is variability in the types of school-based services students receive (e.g., school counseling, services in separate classrooms, or schools serving students with psychiatric disorders). Prior research has typically not distinguished among these different types of school-based services. The present study examines sociodemographic characteristics and disorders associated with the types of services received in schools.
METHODS: Data were analyzed from a sample of adolescent-parent pairs

BACKGROUND: Foreign-born children rarely use traditional school mental health services. Comprehensive programs that combine mental health services with academic, economic, and socioemotional supports reach more foreign-born children and improve wellbeing. However, little practical guidance exists regarding how to best combine these diverse services.
METHODS: To identify essential service components and their organization, we interviewed 92 parents, school staff, mental health providers, and community agency staff from 5 school-linked mental health programs designed specifically to serve immig

OBJECTIVE: Despite being essential for defining and planning special educational services, very few data are available in Quebec regarding the nature and extent of behavioural difficulties presented by children who receive special educational services at school. This study provides a picture of the frequency of disruptive behaviour disorders (that is, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], oppositional defiant disorder [ODD], and conduct disorder [CD]) and internalized disorders (including generalized anxiety disorder [GAD] and major depressive episode [MDE]) in a sample of elementar
