School children are important targets for sun awareness education, but the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of school teachers with respect to sun awareness are poorly understood. A questionnaire-based survey of 76 school teachers was undertaken. Twenty-four per cent of teachers indicated previous experience in teaching sun awareness, but 93% of teachers had no classroom resources for teaching sun awareness. Sun awareness was perceived by respondents as unimportant relative to other health education issues. There was considerable scope for improvement in attitudes and behaviour of teachers w

Cutaneous anthrax is an infection of the skin caused by Bacillus anthracis. This is a report of a case of cutaneous anthrax attending outpatients of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in October, 2010. The infected person was a retired school teacher with a very good body build. He reported to handle cow flesh about 4-5 days ago, developed few painless papules over shin of right leg, which gradually became large bullae and blackish eschar developed over the lesion. Smears from the lesions were investigated which confirmed the causative agent B. anthracis. The patient was treated with oral Cip

INTRODUCTION: The term 'voice' is the acoustic energy generated from the vocal tract that are characterized by their dependence on vocal fold vibratory pattern. Teachers as professional voice users are afflicted with dysphonia and are discouraged with their jobs and seek alternative employment. Loud speaking and voice straining may lead to vocal fatigue and vocal fold tissue damage. The objective of the study is to assess the quality of voice of school teachers before and after teaching practice.
METHODS: Sixty teachers from various schools, volunteered to participate in this study. Acoustic

BACKGROUND: The prolonged use or abuse of voice may lead to vocal fatigue and vocal fold tissue damage. School teachers routinely use their voices intensively at work and are therefore at a higher risk of dysphonia.
AIMS: To determine the prevalence of voice disorders among primary school teachers in Lagos, Nigeria, and to explore associated risk factors.
METHODS: Teaching and non-teaching staff from 19 public and private primary schools completed a self-administered questionnaire to obtain information on personal lifestyles, work experience and environment, and voice disorder symptoms. Dysp

The factor of decisive influence on the acoustic climate in rooms is the inner noise, which is dependent in schools on the activity of children, overcrowding of classes and inadequate use of technical protective means. The inappropriate location of schools, although also important from the standpoint of acoustics, is a much lower source of noise than it is generally assumed. Particularly unfavourable acoustic conditions are in elementary schools with over 300 children in one shift. The spaces with the highest noise level include corridors, especially during recesses between lessons. The noise

OBJECTIVES: To obtain insight into the views of relevant 'stakeholders' (parents, teachers and school nurses) in dental screening in schools.
METHODS: Eight schools in Chester and Ellesmere Port in the UK formed the setting of this study. A teacher from each school participated in one-to-one interviews, and focus groups for parents were carried out in each school. A focus group for school nurses working in the locality was also held. The same trained researcher undertook the interviews and focus groups; all interviews and focus groups were tape recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically

126 elementary school teachers were interviewed in respect to their concepts of school failure and antisociality. According to their opinions antisociality finds its expression especially in the following behaviour: delinquent and/or destructive actions against others or the state, deliberate disturbance of social peace and order in a society, and criminality. The main causes of school failure are seen in intellectual-emotional development retardation, social isolation, rejection of a child by its parents, insufficient maturity for education hereditary mental retardation and lack of intelligen

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM), characterised by widespread pain and fatigue, has frequently been associated with stress in various models, including workplace related stress. In the current study we have evaluated the prevalence of FM symptoms among Israeli school teachers and have attempted to correlate such symptoms with work-related stress.
METHODS: Individuals, all currently employed as school teachers in Israel, were recruited to the study. Participants were asked to answer a questionnaire evaluating symptoms of FM, based on the current diagnostic criteria, which include the wid

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To verify the relationship between behavioral dysphonia and current depressive episodes in municipal elementary school teachers. We hypothesize that teachers with behavioral dysphonia will be more susceptible to psychiatric disorders.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study, quantitative, conducted across municipal schools in both rural and urban regions of Pelotas.
METHOD: Five-hundred seventy-five teachers from urban and rural areas of the same Brazilian state were included. The full version of the Voice Handicap Index validated into Brazilian Portuguese was used to determine t

A study was made of stress factors experienced by primary school teachers in Zambia after they had attended a course on stress management and counselling skills. Their pupils were significantly affected by poverty, death and illness of parents, fellow-pupils and teachers, teenage sex and pregnancy, violence in the home and, among girls, low self-esteem. The HIV epidemic had a major bearing on these factors, and there were wide-ranging effects on the teachers' own lives. Despite the training they had been given, many teachers felt that they could not adequately counsel their pupils on these mat

BACKGROUND: School teachers are known to be at risk for dysphonia. However, they do not always get the benefits that are guaranteed to people with occupational diseases. Objective parameters attempting to quantify the condition are a requirement. Based on an earlier smaller study done in a single district of Kerala, a highly literate State in south India, the present study was envisaged as a Statewide survey of the problem.
OBJECTIVES: The aim was to check the possibility of designating voice problem (dysphonia) in school teachers as a distinct occupational health issue. The primary objective

INTRODUCTION: Multiple studies have examined the individual and socio-demographic variables that can contribute to the development of burnout in teachers. Although the evidence supports that this syndrome is generated through the interaction between the aspects of the organization and those of the person, little attention has been spent on the impact of the teacher-student relationship adjustment and, especially, on the role of violence exercised by students or their families toward secondary school teachers, who seem to be more vulnerable than teaching professionals in general.
OBJECTIVE: To

OBJECTIVES: Although the demands and stress of teaching are generally recognized, little is known about the prevalence and nature of insomnia symptoms in teachers. This scoping study investigated the following questions: How prevalent are insomnia symptoms in teachers? What biopsychosocial variables are associated with insomnia symptoms in teachers? What, if any, interventions for insomnia symptoms in teachers have been studied?
METHOD: We searched Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL, Education Source, and ERIC for original peer-reviewed research on school teachers (kindergarten through high sc

INTRODUCTION: Negative psychological factors such as depression and other common mental disorders have been found to be associated with voice problems in teachers. However, there is little research with teachers that investigates the relationship between positive psychological factors such as wellbeing and voice problems. Although negative and positive mental states are on a continuum of psychological health, research suggests negative and positive effects are not necessarily inversely correlated and therefore need to be investigated separately.
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To explore the relationsh

(1) Background: Teacher mental health is a growing concern due to the high emotional and professional demands of teaching. Anxiety is particularly prevalent among teachers, yet it is often conceptualized as a unitary construct, overlooking its multidimensional nature. This study examined the role of transdiagnostic psychological variables and sociodemographic factors as predictors of different dimensions of anxiety (physical, cognitive, and social) in secondary school teachers. (2) Methods: A total of 444 Spanish secondary school teachers (Mage = 41.76, SD = 10.80; 50% women) participated. Dat

BACKGROUND: Teachers are at high risk of stress-related disorders. This study aimed to examine the occurrence of burnout in a sample of Swedish school-teachers, to test a combined measure of three burnout dimensions on the individual level, to characterize associations between burnout and factors encountered during work and leisure time, and to explore any differences between the genders.
METHODS: A questionnaire of occupational, sociodemographic and life-style factors was answered by 490 teachers in school years 4-9. Outcome measures were (a) the single burnout dimensions of exhaustion, cyni

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the research study on school stress and the coping strategies children use in public schools in Poland. The main goals were to identify and investigate: (1) school stress components, its frequency and intensity, (2) its psychological and temperamental correlates and consequences, (3) students' coping strategies.
METHOD: A field-correlative design was applied to test 271 students, between the ages of 13 and 14, using six questionnaires. School stressors and children's coping strategies were identified and analyzed on two separate questionnaires with open-ended qu

The study explored the retirement concerns of basic school teachers in Ghana. It employed a qualitative phenomenological research design. 24 teachers aged 50-55, who were in the pre-retirement stage and approaching statutory retirement of 60, were sampled using the maximum variation sampling technique and interviewed. In-depth semistructured interviews were used to gather data, which were then subjected to thematic analysis. The findings revealed financial concerns, healthcare issues and social isolation as retirement concerns. The study found that teachers' retirement concerns were centred ar
