Educational programs in US medical schools.

One noteworthy finding for the 1990-1991 academic year is the increasing number of applicants to medical school, coupled with stabilization in the credentials of accepted applicants. This increase appears to be reversing the downward trend of the 1980s. The percentages of women and total minority students in the entering class increased from the previous year. The prevalence of instructional formats such as problem-based learning and computer-assisted instruction illustrates that medical schools are willing to experiment with educational innovation. A number of schools are in the process of cu

The medical schools outcomes database project: Australian medical student characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Global medical workforce requirements highlight the need for effective workforce planning, with the overall aims being to alleviate doctor shortages and prevent maldistribution. The Medical Schools Outcomes Database and Longitudinal Tracking (MSOD) Project provides a foundation for evaluating outcomes of medical education programs against specified workforce objectives (including rural and areas of workforce needs), assisting in medical workforce planning, and provision of a national research resource. This paper describes the methodology and baseline results for the MSOD project.

Supporting medical students with learning disabilities in Asian medical schools.

Learning disabilities (LDs) represent the largest group of disabilities in higher education (HE) institutes, including medical schools, and the numbers are continuing to rise. The worrying concern is that two-thirds to half of these students with LDs remain undiagnosed when they start their undergraduate education and may even graduate without having their disabilities diagnosed. These students struggle with their academic abilities, receive poor grades and, as a result, develop lower perceptions of their intellectual abilities than do those students without LDs. All these ultimately hamper th

Medical student fitness to practise committees at UK medical schools.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to explore the structures for managing student fitness to practise hearings in medical schools in the UK. We surveyed by email the named fitness to practise leads of all full members of the UK Medical Schools Council with a medical undergraduate programme. We asked whether student fitness to practise cases were considered by a committee/panel dedicated to medicine, or by one which also considered other undergraduate health and social care students. FINDINGS: All 31 medical schools responded. 19 medical schools had a fitness to practise committee dealing with medical st

Establishing Medical Schools in Limited Resource Settings.

INTRODUCTION: One urgent goal of countries in sub-Saharan Africa is to dynamically scale up the education and work force of medical doctors in the training institutions and health facilities, respectively. These countries face challenges related to the rapid scale up which is mostly done without proper strategic planning, without the basic elements of infrastructure development, educational as well as academic and administrative human resources. Medical education done in the context of limited resources is thus compromising the quality of graduates. In the future, a collaborative and need-base

Fertility Benefits at Top U.S. Medical Schools.

Background: Female physicians have a higher prevalence of infertility compared with the general population. Physician well-being can be significantly impacted by the physical and emotional challenges associated with this, including the high cost of fertility treatments, which are often not covered by health insurance. There are limited data on the current state of fertility coverage available for physicians. This study examines fertility insurance benefits offered for faculty at top U.S. medical schools. Methods: Between March and April 2021, we reviewed fertility benefits at medical schools r

Tobacco awareness in three U.S. medical schools.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs of future physicians regarding smoking cessation and tobacco-related issues and the development of these attributes during the course of medical education. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, questionnaires were completed by 298 first- and fourth-year medical students at three medical schools from 2003 through 2004. The primary outcomes were knowledge of the health effects of tobacco and smoking cessation strategies, attitudes toward smoking cessation, and anticipated clinical behavior with respect to addressing smoking behavior and

The medical humanities at United States medical schools: a mixed method analysis of publicly assessable information on 31 schools.

INTRODUCTION: There have been increasing efforts to integrate the arts and humanities into medical education, particularly during undergraduate medical education (UME). Previous studies, however, have focused on courses and curricular programming without rigorous characterization of the associated paracurricular environment or infrastructure enabling or facilitating these offerings. METHODS: To assess opportunities for students to engage the arts and humanities during their medical education as well as the institutional resources to support those opportunities, we developed the Humanities and

[Pharmacology practice in understaffed local university medical schools].

Pharmacology department in medical schools performs an introductory practical training program where medical students first experience the medical practice of using drugs in a university setting. However, recent university budget cuts have led to a shortage of human resources, insufficient funding for practical training, and the simplification or promotion of online training due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as changes in student attitudes, creating a significant turning point. In this symposium, I presented the results of a survey on the current state of pharmacology laboratory courses at

Applicants to Canadian medical schools for 1966-67.

An examination of applicants to Canadian medical schools for 1966-67 revealed that 4534 applications were received for the approximately 974 available places. The number of Canadian applications was 2866 and these were made by 1815 individual applicants, an increase of 48 over 1965-66. United States applicants declined from 1143 to 1013.Evaluations made by the schools concerning the acceptability of the Canadian applicants disclosed that 55 applicants who rated as "acceptable" by one or more schools failed to gain admission to any medical school in 1966-67 (as compared to 36 in 1965-66). Mapping Geriatric Medicine education in Portuguese medical schools.

PURPOSE: Portugal is one of the most rapidly aging countries in Europe, highlighting the need for adequate undergraduate training in the care of older adults. However, Geriatric Medicine (GM) teaching in Portugal remains heterogeneous, and its alignment with the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) undergraduate recommendations is unclear. We aim to map current GM education practices across Portuguese medical schools and to provide a national overview to support future curricular improvements. METHODS: A descriptive observational study was conducted using an online structured question

Facial trauma education within two English medical schools.

Facial trauma accounts for 5%-10% of all presentations to emergency departments (ED) in the UK, and it is often referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) department by ED physicians. Undergraduate medical students often have limited exposure to OMFS, and this is likely to translate to reduced exposure to facial trauma. We investigated the exposure of undergraduate clinical medical students to facial trauma teaching and asked about their confidence to manage facial lacerations and their ability to diagnose common facial fractures. An online survey was completed by 237 medical studen

Educational programs in US medical schools, 1996-1997.

We use data from the 1996-1997 Liaison Committee on Medical Education Annual Medical School Questionnaire, which had a 100% response rate, to describe medical education programs in the United States. In the 1996-1997 academic year, there were 95 568 full-time medical school faculty members, a 4.5% increase from 1995-1996. In clinical departments, the largest increases were in emergency medicine (a 29% increase from 1995-1996) and family medicine (a 13% increase). Of all full-time faculty members in clinical departments, 76.9% have an MD or DO as the highest degree, 4.5% have both an MD and PhD

Radiation Protection Practices Among Medical Students at Two United Kingdom Medical Schools.

Background Orthopaedic surgery frequently involves the use of intraoperative fluoroscopy, exposing operating theatre personnel to ionising radiation. Medical students often attend orthopaedic procedures during their clinical training, yet their education on radiation safety and access to appropriate protective equipment remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate radiation safety among medical students during surgical placements, focusing on educational exposure, practical radiation protection practices, and perceived safety. Methodology A multicentre, cross-sectional, questionnaire
