Anaphylactic shock caused by exposure to sea anemones.

BACKGROUND: Since the first report of a dog that developed severe systemic symptoms in response to a second injection of sea anemone toxin by Richet and Portier in 1902, no clear human cases of anaphylaxis related to exposure to sea anemones has been reported in the literature. METHODS: A 24-year-old man with an episode of local urticaria on his first contact with a sea anemone (Stichodactyla haddoni), developed dyspnea, severe urticaria and hypotension on exposure to water containing the dead bodies of the organism. To study whether this reaction was mediated by antigen-specific IgE, we perf

Plastic leachates increase feeding retention times in sea anemones.

Plastic is accumulating in marine ecosystems, where it is consumed by marine animals. In the present study, we leached plastic pre-production pellets and plastic knives in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) grade water for 24 h. We offered sea anemones (Exaiptasia pallida) a glass fiber filter containing 7.5 μL of two types of plastic leachates, plastic pre-production pellet leachate or plastic knife leachate, and compared feeding behavior with control glass fiber filters (7.5 μl of HPLC-grade water only). We observed that anemones fed filters with plastic leachates had feeding rete

Stings by the sea anemone Anemonia sulcata in the Adriatic Sea.

The sea anemone Anemonia sulcata is the clinically most important Actinaria in the Adriatic Sea. Between 1965 and 1980, 55 patients stung by this cnidarian were seen at the Pula Medical Center in Istria, Yugoslavia. The majority of injuries were inflicted upon the upper extremities, chest, or abdomen. Pain and the appearance of small blanched papules surrounded by slightly reddened and edematous bases were the usually initiating manifestations. Linear lesions were sometimes seen. Vesicles, sometimes filled with serous fluid, localized discoloration, and the formation of bullae sometimes follow

Evolutionary patterns and repeated adaptive strategies of deep-sea anemones.

Sea anemones occupy the full depth range of the oceans, yet their evolutionary patterns and adaptive strategies to the enigmatic deep sea have remained contentious and poorly resolved. Here, we assemble genomes (n = 13) and transcriptomes for 15 species collected between 432 and 6,000 m and integrate them with publicly available actiniarian data. We find support for a shallow-water origin of Actiniaria through a framework that emphasizes genome-scale changes associated with habitat transitions. Most strikingly, these changes include repeated dismantling of the circadian toolkit across deep-sea

A Sea-Anemone-Inspired, Multifunctional, Bistable Gripper.

The growing need for soft robots with secure, adaptive, and autonomous functioning in unforeseen environments favors designs with multiple functionalities. This has driven soft robotic grippers to be explored to integrate perceptual capability for augmented multifunctionality. In nature, sea anemones can detect and catch preys of various shapes and sizes effectively with extremely simple bodies because of the efficient coupling of sensing and actuation capability. Inspired by their body structures, we present a bistable gripper with multifunctionality that includes sensing (proprioceptive and

Differential metabolic responses in bold and shy sea anemones during a simulated heatwave.

As climate change-induced heatwaves become more common, phenotypic plasticity at multiple levels is a key mitigation strategy by which organisms can optimise selective outcomes. In ectotherms, changes to both metabolism and behaviour can help alleviate thermal stress. Nonetheless, no study in any ectotherm has yet empirically investigated how changing temperatures affect among-individual differences in the associations between these traits. Using the beadlet anemone (Actinia equina), an intertidal species from a thermally heterogeneous environment, we investigated how individual metabolic rate

Specificity of antibodies to sea anemone toxin III and immunogenicity of the pharmacological site of anemone and scorpion toxins.

Toxin III (ATX III) of the sea anemone (Anemonia sulcata) is a polypeptide containing 27 amino acid residues. It has no sequence similarity with other toxins (ATX I and II) from the same species, or with scorpion toxins, although they apparently act in a similar manner by prolonging action potentials. The specificity of ATX III antibodies was characterized using ATX III, ATX I, native and chemically modified ATX II, and scorpion alpha-toxins. The results obtained suggest that a region of ATX III, partially or totally overlapping the pharmacological site shared with ATX I and ATX II, is immunog

Lip angioedema after indirect contact with a sea anemone.

Sea anemones are marine animals that can produce toxins causing severe angioedema. Swimmers and divers should be aware of sea anemone species that can cause local and systemic toxic reactions and avoid indirect or direct skin contact. High index of suspicion, full laboratory workup, and treatment with steroids and antibiotics are imperative for an uneventful recovery.

Acute renal failure after a sea anemone sting.

A 27-year-old man suffering from severe swelling and pain in his right arm was referred to our hospital. He showed signs of acute renal failure (ARF) with severe dermatitis of his right arm. Three days before being admitted, he accidentally touched some kind of marine organism with his right hand while snorkeling in the Sulu Sea around Cebu Island. Within a few minutes, he was experiencing severe pain in his right hand. Then his right hand gradually became swollen. The marine creature responsible for this injury was thought to have been a sea anemone, which is a type of coelenterate. Histologi

Purification, sequence, and pharmacological properties of sea anemone toxins from Radianthus paumotensis. A new class of sea anemone toxins acting on the sodium channel.

Four new toxins have been isolated from the sea anemone Radianthus paumotensis: RpI, RpII, RpIII, and RpIV. They are polypeptides comprised of 48 or 49 amino acids; the sequence of RpII has been determined. Toxicities of these toxins in mice and crabs are similar to those of the other known sea anemone toxins, but they fall into a different immunochemically defined class. The sequence of RpII shows close similarities with the N-terminal end (up to residue 20) of the previously sequenced long sea anemone toxins, but most of the remaining part of the molecule is completely different. The clownfish-hosting sea anemones (Anthozoa: Actiniaria): updated nomenclature, biogeography, and practical field guide.

Ten described species of sea anemones (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Actiniaria) serve as hosts to charismatic clownfishes (or anemonefishes) on coral reefs throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific. Although not diverse in number, the clownfish-hosting sea anemones have large biogeographic ranges, exhibit extensive intraspecific phenotypic appearances, and have been surrounded by a great deal of historical and contemporary taxonomic and nomenclatural confusion. We believe these factors have created challenges for field scientists making real-time species-level identifications of host sea anemones.

Feeding-dependent tentacle development in the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis.

In cnidarians, axial patterning is not restricted to embryogenesis but continues throughout a prolonged life history filled with unpredictable environmental changes. How this developmental capacity copes with fluctuations of food availability and whether it recapitulates embryonic mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we utilize the tentacles of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis as an experimental paradigm for developmental patterning across distinct life history stages. By analyzing over 1000 growing polyps, we find that tentacle progression is stereotyped and occurs in a feeding-dep

Defensin-neurotoxin dyad in a basally branching metazoan sea anemone.

Recent studies suggest that vertebrate and invertebrate defensins have evolved from two independent ancestors, and that both defensins could share origins with animal toxins. Here, we purified novel sea anemone neurotoxin (BDS)-like antimicrobial peptides (AMPs)-Crassicorin-I and its putative homolog (Crassicorin-II)-from the pharynx extract of an anthozoan sea anemone (Urticina crassicornis). Based on structural analyses and cDNA cloning, mature Crassicorin-I represents a cationic AMP likely generated from a precursor and comprising 40 amino acid residues, including six cysteines forming thre

Neurotoxin localization to ectodermal gland cells uncovers an alternative mechanism of venom delivery in sea anemones.

Jellyfish, hydras, corals and sea anemones (phylum Cnidaria) are known for their venomous stinging cells, nematocytes, used for prey and defence. Here we show, however, that the potent Type I neurotoxin of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis, Nv1, is confined to ectodermal gland cells rather than nematocytes. We demonstrate massive Nv1 secretion upon encounter with a crustacean prey. Concomitant discharge of nematocysts probably pierces the prey, expediting toxin penetration. Toxin efficiency in sea water is further demonstrated by the rapid paralysis of fish or crustacean larvae upon appli

Swimming sea anemones of Puget Sound: swimming of Actinostola new species in response to Stomphia coccinea.

Swimming as a response of the sea anemone Actinostola new species can be elicited as a result of contact with the submarginal surface of another swimming sea anemone Stomphia coccinea. However, Stomphia does not swim as a result of contact with Actinostola. In all other known respects, swimming is caused in both species by the same stimuli, including certain starfishes, a nudibranch, and electrical stimuli. No agent that causes Actinostola to swim has been detected in extracts, rubbings, or dried matter from Stomphia.

Aortic Valve Papillary Fibroelastoma: A Sea Anemone in the Heart, A Case Report.

Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas are benign primary cardiac tumors usually arising from the normal components of the endocardium. Grossly they have a characteristic short pedicle and multiple papillary fronds similar to sea anemone. Clinically they have varying presentations ranging from asymptomatic to severe ischemic or embolic complications. We hereby present a case of a middle-aged man who presented with exertional dyspnea and palpitations and was discovered to have papillary fibroelastoma involving the aortic valve. The described case illustrates some of the presenting features, the worku
