Adapting to sea level rise and storms.

It is well known that sea level rise (SLR) will force retreat along rural coastlines but that cities will need to protect their coasts. But how exactly should seawalls, flood insurance, and retreat be used over time to minimize the overall cost of coastal flooding to society? This paper examines dynamic coastal adaptation in six cities along the eastern seaboard of the United States through 2180. We argue that seawalls should be designed to minimize the sum of seawall costs and expected residual flood damage. Flood insurance for residual damage can address risk aversion. The results reveal tha

Sea-level rise and freshwater management are reshaping coastal landscapes.

Along low-elevation coastlines, sea-level rise (SLR) threatens to salinate ecosystems. To understand the effects of SLR and freshwater management on landscape carbon (C) exchange, we measured the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 between subtropical wetland ecosystems and the atmosphere along a dynamic salinity gradient. Ecosystems were representative of freshwater marl prairies, brackish ecotones, and saline scrub mangrove forests in the southeastern Everglades. Patterns in NEE explained the landward movement of coastal wetlands, a process observed over the last 70 years. The capacity to ca

Global sea-level rise will create a new biological invasion front.

Climate change is causing a redistribution of life on Earth but also creating new habitats that can result in biological invasions. Despite great efforts focused on predicting range expansions of non-native species under climate change, its induced sea-level rise may open new habitats for the landward expansion of marine non-native species into inundated coastal lands, which remains unexplored. Here we show that over two-thirds of inundated coastal land area (approximately 290,000-470,000 km2) will be environmentally suitable for 122 established non-native marine animals by the middle and end

Reclaiming Resilience Through Granular Arbitrage: Anticipating Sea Level Rise in Singapore.

Over the last sixty ears, Singapore has expanded its land footprint over twenty-five percent by reclaiming land from the sea. Its outsized demand for sand to resource these projects has rendered regional sand markets precarious, and successive countries have banned sand exports to Singapore. Nevertheless, the Singapore government has committed to spending $SG one billion (US$ 767 million) a year until 2100 to mitigate sea level rise. While this includes a range of strategies, from improving drainage infrastructure to exploring adaptive solutions, in the main this involves reclaiming vast amoun

Assessing risk of groundwater pollution exposure from sea level rise in California.

Sea level rise (SLR) will cause a groundwater table rise in coastal aquifers, and this can trigger exposure to toxic chemicals via direct contact with contaminated water or through vapor intrusion. This study presents deep learning- and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) models to assess risk of polluted groundwater exposure due to SLR in California. Our method quantifies risk based on (1) SLR-related groundwater rise projections and (2) a prioritization of 2296 hazardous sites according to a geochemical indexing algorithm applied to groundwater data from the California State Water Reso

Mortality impacts of rainfall and sea-level rise in a developing megacity.

Rainfall and flooding frequently disrupt the lives of urban residents worldwide, posing substantial public health risks1,2. Rapid urbanization is exposing larger and more vulnerable populations to flooding3, while climate change intensifies rainfall patterns4,5 and rising sea levels impair drainage systems6-11. Despite the growing recognition and urgency of these hazards, the health impacts of rainfall remain poorly understood, and those of sea-level rise are entirely unquantified. Here we estimate the mortality consequences of rainfall in one of the world's largest cities-Mumbai, India. We in

Assessing coastline recession for adaptation planning: sea level rise versus storm erosion.

The Sixth Assessment report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states with high confidence that most sandy coasts around the world will experience an increase in coastal erosion over the twenty-first century. An increase in long term coastal erosion (coastline recession) along sandy coasts can translate into massive socio-economic impacts, unless appropriate adaptation measures are implemented in the next few decades. To adequately inform adaptation measures, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the relative importance of the physical processes driving coa

Redating the earliest evidence of the mid-Holocene relative sea-level highstand in Australia and implications for global sea-level rise.

Reconstructing past sea levels can help constrain uncertainties surrounding the rate of change, magnitude, and impacts of the projected increase through the 21st century. Of significance is the mid-Holocene relative sea-level highstand in tectonically stable and remote (far-field) locations from major ice sheets. The east coast of Australia provides an excellent arena in which to investigate changes in relative sea level during the Holocene. Considerable debate surrounds both the peak level and timing of the east coast highstand. The southeast Australian site of Bulli Beach provides the earlie

Methodology and data for quantifying storm erosion potential considering sea level rise.

This dataset quantifies storm intensity of approximately 130 unique historical storms along the New Jersey coastline from 1980 to 2014 for three separate sea level conditions. Namely, (1) as observed in the historical record; (2) detrended to 1997 mean sea level and (3) adjusted to the 2050 and 2100 sea level rise scenarios presented in the International Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). Projected sea level scenarios are adjusted to include local vertical land movement. Storm intensity is quantified in terms of erosion potential, considering the combination of tot

Modeling the interaction of vegetation and sea level rise on barrier island evolution.

Barrier islands provide a first line of defense against ocean flooding and storm surge. Biogeomorphic interactions are recognized as important in coastal system processes, but current barrier island models are primarily dominated by physical processes. Recent research has demonstrated different biogeomorphic states that influence response to sea level rise and other disturbance. Building on this understanding, we present a cellular model utilizing biotic and abiotic processes and their interactions for barrier island evolution. Using the literature and field derived parameters, we model barrie

Quantifying the effects of sea level rise driven marsh migration on wave attenuation.

Sea level rise (SLR) is the most significant climate change-related threat to coastal wetlands, driving major transformations in coastal regions through marsh migration. Landscape transformations due to marsh migration are manifested in terms of horizontal and vertical changes in land cover and elevation, respectively. These processes will have an impact on saltmarsh wave attenuation that is yet to be explored. This study stands as a comprehensive analysis of spatially distributed wave attenuation by vegetation in the context of a changing climate. Our results show that: i) changes in saltmars

Impacts of Sea Level Rise on Danish Coastal Wetlands - a GIS-based Analysis.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenarios run by an ensemble of models developed by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) projects an average sea level rise (SLRs) of 0.6 to 1.2 m for the low and high emission scenarios (SSP1-1.9, SSP5-8.5), during the next century (IPCC 2021). The coastal zone will experience an increase in the flooding of terrestrial habitats and the depth of marine productive areas, with potential negative consequences for these ecosystems. The coast in Denmark is highly modified due to anthropogenic uses. Dikes, dams, and other coastal infrastru

Assessing extreme sea level rise impacts on coastal agriculture in Europe and North Africa.

Sea Level Rise refers to the long-term increase of sea level. This phenomenon is primarily driven by the melting of ice caps and the thermal expansion of the oceans. Extreme Sea Level Rise (ESLR) events occur when SLR combines with temporary phenomena such as storm surges, tides, and waves, creating potentially damaging coastal flooding. The accelerating impact of climate change has raised the attention on ESLR and its effects on coastal regions. This study focuses on ESLR and its potential impacts on Europe and North Africa up to 2100, with particular attention to agriculture. Utilising Joint

Permafrost thaw subsidence, sea-level rise, and erosion are transforming Alaska's Arctic coastal zone.

Arctic shorelines are vulnerable to climate change impacts as sea level rises, permafrost thaws, storms intensify, and sea ice thins. Seventy-five years of aerial and satellite observations have established coastal erosion as an increasing Arctic hazard. However, other hazards at play-for instance, the cumulative impact that sea-level rise and permafrost thaw subsidence will have on permafrost shorelines-have received less attention, preventing assessments of these processes' impacts compared to and combined with coastal erosion. Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) is ideal for such assessment

Hidden costs to building foundations due to sea level rise in a changing climate.

Coastal civil infrastructure is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Hurricane storm surge and coastal flooding can cause significant hydrostatic and hydrodynamic loads on structures while saltwater intrusion (SWI) may lead to deterioration of foundations. The effects of saltwater intrusion due to Sea Level Rise (SLR) on the foundations of buildings and other civil infrastructure is poorly understood. Such damages may not be detected in a timely fashion nor be insured, leading to significant and unanticipated expenses for building owners. In this study, we evaluate the impact of SWI du

An integrated view on the uncertainties of sea-level rise, hazards and impacts, and adaptation.

While adapting to future sea-level rise (SLR) and its hazards and impacts is a multidisciplinary challenge, the interaction of scientists across different research fields, and with practitioners, is limited. To stimulate collaboration and develop a common research agenda, a workshop held in June 2024 gathered 22 scientists and policymakers working in the Netherlands. Participants discussed the interacting uncertainties across three different research fields: sea-level projections, hazards and impacts, and adaptation. Here, we present our view on the most important uncertainties within each fie

A review of estimating population exposure to sea-level rise and the relevance for migration.

This review analyses global or near-global estimates of population exposure to sea-level rise (SLR) and related hazards, followed by critically examining subsequent estimates of population migration due to this exposure. Our review identified 33 publications that provide global or near-global estimates of population exposure to SLR and associated hazards. They fall into three main categories of exposure, based on definitions in the publications: (i) the population impacted by specified levels of SLR; (ii) the number of people living in floodplains that are subject to coastal flood events with

Nationwide economic impacts of sea level rise and storm surge from global warming in Australia.

Driven by global warming and thermal expansion of the oceans, ice loss from glaciers and ice sheets will continue to increase sea levels and the risk of storm-surge, threatening coastal regions worldwide. This study presents the first national-scale assessment of SLR/S impacts on land use and assets across Australia, covering 1,156 coastal sub-regions in six states and the Northern Territory under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The analysis integrates physical and economic impacts across 10 aggregated land-use categories. By 2100, under RCP4.5, SLR/S is projected to affect 267.5 thousand propert

Projected sediment supply deficits threaten intertidal wetland resilience to sea-level rise in southeast Australia.

Estuarine intertidal wetlands, positioned at the interface of land and sea, are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise and other climate change threats such as flooding and storm-driven erosion. Sustaining these ecosystems and their services requires evidence-based projections of wetland resilience under multiple climate futures while explicitly accounting for uncertainty. Here, we integrated the revised universal soil loss equation with updated rainfall projections from the New South Wales and Australian Regional Climate Modelling (NARCliM2.0) to estimate potential sediment delivery to New South

Effects of sea-level rise on physiological ecology of populations of a ground-dwelling ant.

INTRODUCTION: Sea-level rise is a consequence of climate change that can impact the ecological and physiological changes of coastal, ground-dwelling species. Sea-level rise has a potential to inundate birds, rodents, spiders, and insects that live on the ground in coastal areas. Yet, there is still much to be learned concerning the specifics of these impacts. The red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta (Buren) excavates soil for its home and is capable of surviving flooding. Because of their ground-dwelling life history and rapid reproduction, fire ants make an ideal model for discovery and p
