[Pruritus in Germany-a Google search engine analysis].

BACKGROUND: Because affected persons often do not visit a doctor, the prevalence of chronic and acute pruritus in the general population is difficult to determine. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to estimate the frequency and the most common locations of pruritus in German internet users, who-with 62.4 million persons-represent a large majority of the German population, by analysing the Google search volume. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant keywords for the subject "pruritus" were identified and analysed using the Google AdWords Keyword Planner. The assessment period was January 2015 to

Using Search Engine Data as a Tool to Predict Syphilis.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have suggested that social media and online search data might be used to monitor and predict syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases. Because people at risk for syphilis might seek sexual health and risk-related information on the internet, we investigated associations between internet state-level search query data (e.g., Google Trends) and reported weekly syphilis cases. METHODS: We obtained weekly counts of reported primary and secondary syphilis for 50 states from 2012 to 2014 from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We collected weekly inter

preSCRIPT: Large-scale prescription search and annotation engine for pharmacogenomic studies.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacogenetics (PGx) has traditionally focused on a small number of high-impact variants affecting drug response due to the fact that PGx studies are labor-intensive and therefore low-throughput. Population biobanks linked to electronic health records (EHRs), including the UK Biobank (UKB) with prescription data for ~ 230,000 individuals offer opportunities to scale PGx research. This, however, comes with a challenge as EHRs do not provide direct treatment response outcomes. One way to overcome this is to draw indirect drug response phenotypes from prescription records. METHODS:

Identifying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis through interactions with an internet search engine.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor neuron disease, remains a clinical diagnosis with an average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis of about 1 year. Herein we examine the possibility that interactions with an internet search engine can identify people with ALS. METHODS: We identified 285 anonymous Bing users whose queries indicated that they had been diagnosed with ALS and matched them to: (1) 3276 control users; and (2) 1814 users whose searches indicated they had ALS disease mimics. We tested whether the ALS group could be distinguished from controls and di

Adverse Reactions Associated With Cannabis Consumption as Evident From Search Engine Queries.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is one of the most widely used psychoactive substances worldwide, but adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with its use are difficult to study because of its prohibited status in many countries. OBJECTIVE: Internet search engine queries have been used to investigate ADRs in pharmaceutical drugs. In this proof-of-concept study, we tested whether these queries can be used to detect the adverse reactions of cannabis use. METHODS: We analyzed anonymized queries from US-based users of Bing, a widely used search engine, made over a period of 6 months and compared the resul

Seasonal trends in tinnitus symptomatology: evidence from Internet search engine query data.

The primary aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the symptom of tinnitus demonstrates a seasonal pattern with worsening in the winter relative to the summer using Internet search engine query data. Normalized search volume for the term 'tinnitus' from January 2004 through December 2013 was retrieved from Google Trends. Seasonal effects were evaluated using cosinor regression models. Primary countries of interest were the United States and Australia. Secondary exploratory analyses were also performed using data from Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland. Assessing seasonal dynamics of Guillain-Barré syndrome with search engine query data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In previous studies, data deriving from Google Trends showed promising correlation with disease incidence trends assessed with public health control systems. The aim of this work is to use search engine query data to investigate seasonal dynamics in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in the USA. METHODS: Average Google monthly search volumes for GBS from 2008 to 2017 were analysed for the USA overall and on regional base with generalized estimating equation models. Association with monthly historical temperature variations was tested. RESULTS: Monthly search volume for G

Towards Identifying and Reducing the Bias of Disease Information Extracted from Search Engine Data.

The estimation of disease prevalence in online search engine data (e.g., Google Flu Trends (GFT)) has received a considerable amount of scholarly and public attention in recent years. While the utility of search engine data for disease surveillance has been demonstrated, the scientific community still seeks ways to identify and reduce biases that are embedded in search engine data. The primary goal of this study is to explore new ways of improving the accuracy of disease prevalence estimations by combining traditional disease data with search engine data. A novel method, Biased Sentinel Hospit

Perception of four intellectual and developmental disabilities based on search engine and news portrayal.

BACKGROUND: For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, other's perceptions of them based on their condition often begin before birth and go on to impact relationships, opportunities, and self perception across the life course. Search engine results and news media, which may portray these conditions stereotypically or in poor light, are often a key source in these perceptions. Our purpose was to understand how search engine results and available news media can shape perceptions on certain intellectual and developmental disabilities. METHODS: We developed an online Likert-scal
