Hypothyroidism Due to Seaweed Overconsumption.

Hypothyroidism presents various symptoms, ranging from commonly observed signs, such as fatigue, cold sensation, and constipation, to rare features, such as rash and pancytopenia, resembling certain rheumatological and hematological diseases. Chronic, excessive iodine consumption causes primary hypothyroidism. However, when iodine overconsumption becomes a regular part of daily dietary habits, it becomes difficult for patients to associate their symptoms with daily iodine consumption. Therefore, clinicians cannot obtain information on excessive iodine intake from the patient. Here, we present

Lyngbya dermatitis (toxic seaweed dermatitis).

Lyngbya dermatitis is an irritant contact dermatitis caused by the blue-green alga (or cyanobacterium), Lyngbya majuscula, commonly found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide. Lesions generally appear in a bathing suit distribution minutes to hours after exposure, initially with itching or burning, evolving into a blistering eruption which eventually desquamates leaving bright red, tender erosions that resolve spontaneously in about a week. Our case is of a 13-year-old female that presented with haphazard clusters of reddish-brown vesicles and papules on her abdomen one day after swimmin

Seaweed-coral interactions: variance in seaweed allelopathy, coral susceptibility, and potential effects on coral resilience.

Tropical reefs are in global decline with seaweeds commonly replacing corals. Negative associations between macroalgae and corals are well documented, but the mechanisms involved, the dynamics of the interactions, and variance in effects of different macroalgal-coral pairings are poorly investigated. We assessed the frequency, magnitude, and dynamics of macroalgal-coral competition involving allelopathic and non-allelopathic macroalgae on three, spatially grouped pairs of no-take Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and non-MPAs in Fiji. In non-MPAs, biomass of herbivorous fishes was 70-80% lower, ma

Upwelling modulates seaweed biomolecule contents, altering seaweed-consumer interactions in a southwestern pacific coastal system.

Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) are among the most productive marine ecosystems, largely because of the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich seawater into coastal areas. However, the influence of upwelling on biomolecule concentrations in seaweed tissues, and how these changes affect herbivore feeding behavior, remains poorly understood. We addressed these questions by hypothesizing that physicochemical conditions associated with upwelling increase the concentration of essential biomolecules in seaweed tissues, indirectly modulating herbivore behavior. We first characterized multiple upw

Aquatic Antagonists: Seaweed Dermatitis (Lyngbya majuscula).

The cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula grows in marine and estuarine environments across the world and produces many biologically active compounds. Direct contact with L majuscula and its dermatoxins can cause seaweed dermatitis, which manifests as a papulovesicular eruption. As oceans warm, L majuscula will bloom more frequently; therefore, public awareness of L majuscula and seaweed dermatitis in oceanside communities can help promote precautions that can reduce the risk for exposure. This article describes the irritants that lead to dermatitis, clinical presentation, and prevention and manage

[Sargassum seaweed assaults the French West Indies].

SARGASSUM SEAWEED AS SAULTS THE FRENCH WEST INDIES. Since 2011, Martinique and the islands of Guadeloupe have been affected by repeated groundings, culminating in an exceptional wave in 2018. While the sargassum ( Sargassum natans and S. fluitans ) involved in these phenomena are neither toxic nor urticating, indirect toxicity linked to the presence of microorganisms and heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, etc.) in sargassum clusters has been described. Similarly, after a 24 to 48 hours stay on the shore, sargassum algae enter a putrefaction cycle responsible to produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and

Antimicrobial Action of Compounds from Marine Seaweed.

Seaweed produces metabolites aiding in the protection against different environmental stresses. These compounds show antiviral, antiprotozoal, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Macroalgae can be cultured in high volumes and would represent an attractive source of potential compounds useful for unconventional drugs able to control new diseases or multiresistant strains of pathogenic microorganisms. The substances isolated from green, brown and red algae showing potent antimicrobial activity belong to polysaccharides, fatty acids, phlorotannins, pigments, lectins, alkaloids, terpenoids a

Seaweed Sulfated Polysaccharides against Respiratory Viral Infections.

Respiratory viral infections have been a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite massive advancements in the virology field, no specific treatment exists for most respiratory viral infections. Approved therapies against respiratory viruses rely almost exclusively on synthetic drugs that have potential side effects, restricting their use. This review aims to present natural marine sulfated polysaccharides possessing promising antiviral activity against respiratory viruses that could be a safe alternative to synthetic broad-spectrum antiviral drugs. The antiviral properties o

Chemical composition and heavy metal content of Chilean seaweeds: Potential applications of seaweed meal as food and feed ingredients.

Seaweeds are a rich source of nutritional and functional compounds, but they also accumulate heavy metals. Here, the chemical composition (crude protein, total lipids, Nitrogen Free Extract and fiber) and the presence of minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Mo, Se) and unwanted elements (As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Ni, Cr, Al) were determined in eleven seaweeds from Chile. Depending on the species, a good contribution to the Recommended Dietary Allowance for K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn and Se was observed, and low Na/K ratios (<1.0) as well. The health risk assessment indicated low hazard due to intake of se

Iodine-129 in human thyroids and seaweed in China.

The concentrations of 129I and the ratios of 129I/127I in normal human thyroids collected in Tianjin, China, and some seaweed samples from the Chinese coast were determined by neutron activation analysis. The mean 129I/127I ratio in these thyroids was found to be 1.13 x 10(-9), which is two orders of magnitude higher than the level of the pre-nuclear era, but one order of magnitude lower than the level in Europe in the post-nuclear era. There is no significant difference between the ratio of 129I/127I in the thyroids for the post-nuclear era from China and other areas, which are considered not
