Sebocytes, the major cell type in sebaceous glands, are differentiated epithelial cells that gradually accumulate lipids and eventually disrupt, releasing their content (sebum) in a secretory process known as holocrine secretion. Via the hair canal, sebum reaches the skin surface, where it has several known or postulated functions, including pheromonal, thermoregulatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Altered sebum secretion and/or structural sebaceous gland changes have also been involved in the pathogenesis of skin diseases, such as acne vulgaris and some forms of alopecia. Here,

Sebaceous glands are sebum-secreting components of pilosebaceous units. In the second of this two-part series, we review the pathologies in which sebaceous glands are primarily and secondarily implicated. They are primarily involved in steatocystoma simplex and multiplex, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, sebaceoma, sebaceous adenoma, sebaceous carcinoma, nevus sebaceus, and folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma. Sebaceous glands are secondarily involved in acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, and androgenic alopecia. Steatocystoma multiplex is a benign congenital anomaly presenting as yellow cysts

The association of sebaceous gland neoplasms with visceral carcinomas, first described by Muir and Torre, has become widely recognized. The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of malignancy, other associated diseases, and familial carcinoma in patients who had one or more cutaneous lesions within the spectrum of sebaceous adenoma, epithelioma, or carcinoma. Our histopathology files contained tissue from 59 such cases. Overlap between the categories was common, often precluding precise histologic classification. Of the 59 patients, 25 (42%) had one or more primary visceral mali

Sebaceous glands are sebum-secreting components of pilosebaceous units. The embryological development of the sebaceous gland follows that of the hair follicle and epidermal tissue, beginning between weeks 13 and 16 of fetal development. New sebaceous glands do not normally develop following birth, but their size increases with age. Sebocytes express a multitude of hormone receptors and are heavily regulated to secrete sebum by androgens. There is a large increase of sebum excretion at birth and again at puberty, until approximately age 17. In adulthood, sebum production remains stable and decl

Sebaceous glands (SGs) and their specialized subtype, Meibomian glands (MGs), play essential roles in skin and ocular surface homeostasis by producing lipids that maintain barrier integrity and stabilize the tear film. Dysregulation of SG and MG biology contributes to a spectrum of disorders, ranging from benign hyperplasia to sebaceous carcinoma and age-related MG dysfunction. Accumulating evidence highlights the importance of epigenetic regulation, including histone modifications, DNA methylation, and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), in controlling SG and MG development, homeostasis, and disease su

The sebaceous gland (SG) is an integral part of the pilosebaceous unit and is a very active and dynamic organ that contributes significantly to the maintenance of skin homeostasis. In addition to its primary role in sebum production, the SG is involved in the maintenance of skin barrier function, local endocrine/neuroendocrine function, the innate immune response, and the regulation of skin bacterial colonization. Structural and functional alterations of SGs leading to the dysregulation of sebum production/composition and immune response may contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory derma

Sebaceous gland diseases are a group of common dermatological diseases with multiple causes. To date, a systematic report of the risk factors for sebaceous gland diseases in adolescents has not been published. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors for certain sebaceous gland diseases (seborrhea, seborrheic dermatitis, acne, androgenetic alopecia and rosacea) and their relationship to gastrointestinal dysfunction in adolescents. From August-October, 2002-2005, a questionnaire survey was carried out to obtain epidemiological data about sebaceous gland diseases. Usin

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is not clearly understood. The nomenclature suggests an important role for the apocrine glands but recent evidence implicates the pilosebaceous unit as a more likely candidate to play a central role in the pathogenesis.
OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to estimate the volume of the follicular epithelium, the follicular lumen and the sebaceous glands of patients with HS and healthy controls by means of stereology.
METHODS: Four-millimetre punch biopsies were taken from 21 patients with HS and nine healthy controls, fixed in formalin, embedd

The human sebaceous gland is a microscopic branched type multiacinar gland been present everywhere on the body except on the palms and soles, whereas they are sparsely located on the dorsum of hands and feet. Several medical conditions are related with sebaceous gland pathology, such as acne, sebaceous hyperplasia, sebaceous adenoma and sebaceous carcinoma. Acne is a common, complex, chronic disorder of the human pilosebaceous unit that mostly occurs in adolescence and young adulthood. The sebaceous gland plays an exquisite role in the initiation of the disease. The multifactorial nature of th

BACKGROUND: Diffuse sebaceous gland hyperplasia in transplanted buccal mucosa is a very rare condition. We report on a further patient with this entity.
PATIENT: In 1953, a now 68-year-old man suffered a severe alkali burn. Transplantation of oral mucosa was performed that same day in order to prevent perforation of the eye. Over the following 45 years, the patient developed multiple yellowish nodules within the grafts. Histologically, these nodules proved to be normally differentiated sebaceous glands.
CONCLUSIONS: Diffuse sebaceous gland hyperplasia originating from within oral mucosa and

AIMS: Male sex and a younger age of onset in Behçet's disease (BD) are associated with more severe disease. Eye diseases, folliculitis and thrombophlebitis are also more common among males. The disease rarely developes before puberty or after the age of 50. Clinical manifestations of BD, with the exception of eye symptoms, tend to get better with time. Clinical and histological pattern of the papulopustular lesions (PPL), the most common type of skin lesions in BD and the difference from ordinary acne is contradictory. Therefore, BD may be androgen driven to some degree. In the present study,

Skin is an important interface between the host and its environment. Inflammatory dermatoses often have disrupted skin barrier function, rendering patients more susceptible to allergenic triggers leading to an exaggerated immune response. The skin surface lipid film, an important component of the skin barrier, comprises a mixture of keratinocyte and sebaceous gland-derived lipids. Recent evidence demonstrated that defective keratinocyte lipid synthesis predisposes for the development of atopic dermatitis. However, the important role of sebaceous gland-derived lipids in skin inflammatory diseas

Papillomaviruses (PVs) are associated with a variety of skin lesions in cats. Herein, is reported 4 cats with unusual lesions that were associated with PV infection. For each case, the lesions were examined histologically, and p16CDKN2A protein immunolabeling was performed. Total DNA was extracted from the lesions, and both consensus and specific PCR primers were used to amplify PV DNA. In addition, in situ hybridization (ISH) was used to try to detect PV DNA within 2 of the lesions. Two cats had benign proliferations of sebaceous glands that contained histological changes suggestive of PV inf

This review presents several aspects of the innovative concept of sebaceous immunobiology, which summarizes the numerous activities of the sebaceous gland including its classical physiological and pathophysiological tasks, namely sebum production and the development of seborrhea and acne. Sebaceous lipids, which represent 90% of the skin surface lipids in adolescents and adults, are markedly involved in the skin barrier function and perifollicular and dermal innate immune processes, leading to inflammatory skin diseases. Innovative experimental techniques using stem cell and sebocyte models ha

Considerable progress has been made in learning about the physiology and biochemistry of the sebaceous glands and several of the diseases that affect this component of the skin. Of these diseases, acne has particular importance. It is associated with adolescence, and because of the hormonal changes that take place in this stage, when it is severe it can cause depression. Moreover, in a considerable proportion of acne sufferers both adolescent and adult, it can produce tumors and deformation of the sebaceous glands. This seriously affects the sufferers to the point where it may limit their prof

Sebaceous carcinoma and sweat gland carcinoma (malignant tumors with apocrine and eccrine differentiation) are rare malignant skin adnexal tumors that differentiate toward sebaceous gland and eccrine and apocrine glands, respectively. Owing to the rarity of these carcinomas, standard treatments for advanced disease have not been established. Because the prognosis of patients with systemic metastasis is poor, a new treatment for these diseases is eagerly desired. Trophoblast cell surface antigen 2 (TROP2) and sacituzumab govitecan, an antibody-drug conjugate of TROP2, have attracted attention i

We report on a 63-year-old female patient with Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS). In the course of this disease two carcinomas of the colon, a kerato-acanthoma and multiple sebaceous gland tumours, including four sebaceous carcinomas, appeared. This case is thought to be a hereditary form as one of daughters was also found to have a sebaceous epithelioma. MTS is a mostly autosomal-dominant disease with the association of sebaceous gland tumours and internal carcinomas. As the malignant tumours only show slight aggressiveness the prognosis is quite favourable. Oral isotretinoin therapy was successfully
