Topics in histopathology of sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms.

This article reviews several topics regarding sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms. First, the clinicopathological characteristics of poroid neoplasms are summarized. It was recently reported that one-fourth of poroid neoplasms are composite tumors and one-fourth are apocrine type lesions. Recent progress in the immunohistochemical diagnosis of sweat gland neoplasms is also reviewed. CD117 can help to distinguish sweat gland or sebaceous tumors from other non-Merkel cell epithelial tumors of the skin. For immunohistochemical differential diagnosis between sweat gland carcinoma (SGC) other than

Thymus-like phenotype in benign lymphoepithelial neoplasms of salivary glands: clinicopathological and molecular characterization and reappraisal of relationship to non-sebaceous lymphadenoma.

Benign lymphoepithelial tumors of salivary glands had been restricted to sebaceous and non-sebaceous (NSLA) lymphadenomas. However, salivary neoplasms recapitulating carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) have been the subject of recent case reports. We reviewed clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings in 20 salivary gland tumors with thymus-like phenotype (18 histologically benign and two with malignant component). Original diagnoses were NSLA (n = 11) and unclassified thymus-like lymphoepithelial neoplasms (n = 9). Patients were 13 males and 7 females aged 28

Sex steroid hormone receptors in human skin appendage and its neoplasms.

Sex steroids have been postulated to influence pathophysiology of human skin through various skin appendages. The presence of sex steroid receptors has been also reported in adnexal tumors but its details still remained unknown. Therefore, in this study, we immunolocalized sex steroid receptor protein (estrogen receptor (ER)alpha, ERbeta, progesterone receptor (PR)A, PRB and androgen receptor (AR)) in 23 cases of non-pathological skin (male: 10, female: 13) and in 50 cases of skin adnexal tumors (male 24, female 26; 38 benign and 12 malignant). ERalpha immunoreactivity was detected exclusively

Sebaceous adenoma of the submandibular gland: a case report.

Sebaceous adenoma of the salivary gland is a rare tumor comprising 0.1% of all salivary gland neoplasms and less than 0.5% of salivary adenomas. Histologically, sebaceous adenomas are benign neoplasms consisting of sebaceous cells arranged in nests forming acinar and duct-like structures. Oncocytic metaplasia may also occur in some areas. We describe a case of sebaceous adenoma in the submandibular gland. Under a presumptive diagnosis of sialadenitis/sialolithiasis, the patient was administered multiple courses of antibiotics; however, these were not effective. Excisional biopsy resulted in a

Sebaceous adenoma of the parotid gland.

Tumors of the salivary glands constitute an important field of oral and maxillofacial pathology. The majority of salivary gland neoplasms are benign, with malignant salivary tumors accounting for 15 to 32 percent. The most common site for salivary gland tumors is the parotid gland, accounting up to 80 percent of all cases. This article reports the pathologic picture in a case of sebaceous adenoma of the parotid gland. The tumor was composed of epithelial cells lining ducts and closely associated with broad areas of sebaceous differentiation. The growth pattern was predominantly cystic, with ca

A rare case of sebaceous lymphadenoma: Cytohistological correlation of preoperative cytomorphologic findings.

We are presenting a case of a 74-year-old female with a parotid gland mass. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the mass demonstrated cohesive groups of epithelial cells with overall bland-appearing nuclei and abundant vacuolated cytoplasm, consistent with sebaceous cells, in a background of polymorphous lymphocytes, scattered histiocytes, and adipose tissue. Immunostains showed that the epithelial cells stain positive for p63, but negative for CD117 and DOG-1. CD3 and CD20 showed a mixture of T- and B-cells. On the PAP-stained slides, there were numerous sac-like structures, consistent with myosp

Cytologic features of sebaceous, lymphadenoma, and sebaceous lymphadenocarcinoma: Differential diagnostic considerations.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenomas and sebaceous lymphadenocarcinomas are uncommon neoplasms occurring predominately within the parotid gland. Cytomorphology of these neoplasms is rarely reported. Occasional reports have discussed the cytomorphological features of these neoplasms but criteria distinguishing sebaceous lymphadenomas from lymphadenocarcinomas have not been described. METHODS: The senior authors' consultation files and records of the University of Missouri were searched for all cases with a diagnosis of sebaceous adenoma, lymphadenoma, lymphadenocarcinoma, and adenocarcinoma. Homeobox transcriptional factor engrailed homeobox 1 is expressed specifically in normal and neoplastic sweat gland cells.

AIMS: A number of homeobox transcriptional factors are utilised as organ-specific markers in the histopathological diagnosis of neoplasms. We have screened a homeobox gene that is expressed specifically in normal sweat gland cells and is useful for the histopathological diagnosis of sweat gland neoplasms. METHODS AND RESULTS: By screening an open database resource of The Human Protein Atlas, 37 genes among the 235 homeobox transcriptional factors were found to be expressed specifically in the skin. Among those 37 genes, the engrailed homeobox 1 (En1) was expressed in normal eccrine glands but

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of salivary gland: a case report and a review of the literature.

The unusual case is described of a benign parotid gland neoplasm with intermingled sebaceous and lymphoid tissue, synchronous to breast cancer. In the past, the patient had undergone a simple surgical procedure for a cystic parotid gland lesion in that same gland. Secondary neoplasms have only occasionally been reported, since there are few cases for corroborating the strong correlation between salivary neoplasms and other carcinomas as in Muir-Torre syndrome; the previous cystic lesion showed the origin of the neoplasm from a sebaceous inclusion in the lymph node as a postulate of Warthin tum

Cytopathology of benign sebaceous salivary gland neoplasia: Comparison of two analogous yet dissimilar entities.

INTRODUCTION: Benign sebaceous salivary gland (SG) neoplasms represent approximately 0.2% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Not only are fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy findings of sebaceous adenoma (SA) and sebaceous lymphadenoma (SLA) limited, but their findings are also rarely compared with one another. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our cytopathology files were searched for examples of benign sebaceous SG neoplasms with concomitant histopathological verification. FNA biopsy and cell collection were performed using standard technique. RESULTS: One case each of parotid SA and parotid SLA showed

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland.

Sebaceous differentiation in salivary gland tissue is common. However, sebaceous neoplasms within the salivary glands are rare. We present the case of a sebaceous lymphadenoma with unusual features, arising in the parotid gland of a 60-year-old male. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the ultrasound and MRI characteristics of this rare tumour. The difficulties encountered in reaching a definitive diagnosis both radiologically and histologically are described.

Intraoral sebaceous hyperplasia. Diagnostic criteria.

Surprisingly little is understood about the physiologic and pathologic processes that involve intraoral sebaceous glands. Neoplasms are rare. Hyperplasia of these glands is undoubtedly more common, but criteria for the diagnosis of intraoral sebaceous hyperplasia have not been established. These lesions are too often misdiagnosed as large "Fordyce granules" or, when very large, as sebaceous adenomas. On the basis of a series of 31 nonneoplastic sebaceous lesions and on published data, the following definition is proposed: intraoral sebaceous hyperplasia occurs when a lesion, judged clinically

Cutaneous sebaceous neoplasms as markers of Muir-Torre syndrome: a diagnostic algorithm.

Sebaceous gland neoplasms such as adenoma, epithelioma, and carcinoma are uncommon cutaneous tumors. Although sporadic, their occurrence is clinically significant because of their association with Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS). MTS is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by the occurrence of sebaceous gland neoplasms and/or keratoacanthomas associated with visceral malignancies that include gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancers. MTS is usually the result of germline mutation in one or more of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. MMR genes commonly implicated include MSH-2 an

Evaluation of Demographic Features of Eyelid Lesions.

OBJECTIVES: This study was an evaluation of demographic and histopathologic features of eyelid lesions. METHODS: The medical records of 261 patients (296 eyelid lesions) who attended a single clinic between 1997 and 2011 were examined retrospectively. The incidence of benign and malignant lesions, the pathological classification, and age and sex data were investigated. RESULTS: A total of 204 benign lesions (68.9%) and 92 malignant neoplasms (31.1%) were found. Among these, the most frequently seen types of benign neoplasms were xanthelasma (28.4%), papilloma (14.7%), chalazion (8.8%), nevus

The spectrum of sebaceous differentiation in tumors of thymic origin.

Sebaceous differentiation is an unexpected and unusual phenomenon in the normal thymic gland. Among thymic tumors, sebaceous glands are a relatively common component of mediastinal teratomas but are exceedingly rare in other neoplasms of thymic origin. This review explores the spectrum of non-teratomatous thymic tumors in which sebaceous differentiation has been identified, discusses the potential histogenesis and evaluates the effects of this occurrence on diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

NAB2::STAT6 Rearranged Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland with Sebaceous Differentiation: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: The NAB2::STAT6 fusion is predominantly associated with solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) and is utilized in diagnosing SFTs through nuclear STAT6 protein overexpression. Recent studies expanded the phenotypic spectrum of NAB2::STAT6 rearranged neoplasms, including adamantinoma-like and teratocarcinosarcoma-like phenotypes. We report a case of a NAB2::STAT6 rearranged epithelial tumor exhibiting sebaceous differentiation in the parotid gland. METHODS: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA), histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular studies of this case were described. RESULTS: Fine-nee

Sebaceous lymphadenoma identified by fine needle aspiration biopsy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland is a rare benign neoplasm. This is the first reported case of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) findings for sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland. CASE: A 60-year-old male presented with painless, bilateral parotid swelling noted for 5 months. The swelling was more pronounced on the right. Examination revealed bilaterally prominent parotid glands with diffuse firmness but no discrete masses. There was no evidence of facial nerve dysfunction. Laboratory evaluation was negative for infectious and autoimmune etiologies. Magnetic r

Further observations on spontaneous neoplasms in the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus.

One hundred sixty Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, were examined for the presence of naturally occurring lesions. The first recognized cases of cecal adenocarcinoma, testicular teratoma, and sebaceous gland pad carcinoma were found. Neoplasms previously reported from the gerbil and also seen in the present study included ovarian theca lutein and granulosa lutein cell tumors, sebaceous gland pad adenoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and renal and splenic hemangiomas. Calcinosis cutis was also observed in two male gerbils.
