Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the association of accelerometer-assessed sedentary behavior and residual-specific mortality. Methods: Data from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used (N = 5536), with follow-up through 2011. Sedentary behavior was objectively measured over 7 days via accelerometry. Results: When expressing sedentary behavior as a 60 min/day increase, the hazard ratio across the models ranged from 1.07-1.40 (P < 0.05). There was evidence of an interaction effect between sedentary behavior and total physical activit

The objectives of this study were to (i) assess sedentary time and prevalence of screen-based sedentary behaviors of children with a chronic disease and (ii) compare sedentary time and prevalence of screen-based sedentary behaviors to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Sixty-five children (aged 6-18 years) with a chronic disease participated: survivors of a brain tumor, hemophilia, type 1 diabetes mellitus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, cystic fibrosis, and Crohn's disease. Twenty-nine of these participants were compared with age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Sedentary time was measu

In recent years, the adverse effects of prolonged sedentary behavior in daily life, so-called 'sitting too much', on health have been pointed out. Sedentary behavior is defined as 'all waking behavior in which the energy expenditure in a sitting, semi-recumbent, or recumbent position is 1.5 metabolic equivalents or less'. Even if a person engages in the level of physical activity recommended in the guidelines, sitting for too long at other times may increase the risk of developing various diseases and death. For patients with cardiovascular disease, a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation progr

Sedentary behavior (SB) is prevalent in daily life, with a growing number of studies reporting that higher SB exposure is associated with poorer cardiometabolic and brain health. Thus, in line with a broader paradigm shift, SB should be considered as a postural and low-contractile metabolic state, shaped by both total exposure and bout patterning, that is related to, but distinct from, physical activity (PA), rather than simply the absence of the latter. Regarding the gut microbiome, current evidence on the role of SB remains limited and indirect, as human studies have not yet experimentally m

IMPORTANCE: Sedentary behavior is associated with cardiometabolic disease and mortality, but its association with dementia is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether accelerometer-assessed sedentary behavior is associated with incident dementia.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective study of prospectively collected data from the UK Biobank including 49 841 adults aged 60 years or older without a diagnosis of dementia at the time of wearing the wrist accelerometer and living in England, Scotland, or Wales. Follow-up began at the time of wearing the accelerometer (February 2013

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the prevalence of physical activity in the population aged ≥16 years integrating sedentarism and physical inactivity.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study using data from the Galician Risk Behavior Data System (n=12,928) was conducted. The population was classified into four categories: physically active (active and non-sedentary), active but sedentary (active and sedentary), lightly active (inactive and non-sedentary), and extremely sedentary (inactive and sedentary). Prevalences were calculated for each category and a multinomial logistic regression model was fitted.

Mobility applications are rapidly growing in cities worldwide due to their convenience and low cost. Mobility applications drivers experience vast flexibility in work hours, often work longer than in fixed-hours jobs, and can constantly transport passengers in their vehicles for up to 12 h; after this, they must go offline for eight consecutive hours before driving again. Nonetheless, drivers have found an easy way around this limitation by switching to other apps and continuing driving. This burden of prolonged work can increase sedentary behavior among mobility applications drivers. Sedentar

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior is associated with adverse health effects. Insights into associated determinants are essential to prevent sedentary behavior and limit health risks. Sedentary behavior should be viewed as a distinct health behavior; therefore, its determinants should be independently identified.
PURPOSE: This study examines the prospective associations between a wide range of midlife determinants and objectively measured sedentary time in old age.
METHODS: Data from 565 participants (age 73-92 yr) of the AGESII-Reykjavik Study were used. Participants wore an accelerometer (Acti

Growing evidence documents that the influence of sedentary behaviors on brain health is not universally beneficial or detrimental but rather context-dependent and nuanced. More specifically, recent findings suggest that mentally active sedentary behavior, such as video gaming, may benefit brain health, whereas mentally passive sedentary behavior, such as television viewing, may not convey such benefits. However, traditional classification approaches do not fully recognize the importance of content relevance. In this opinion article, we propose a neurobiological, dual-axis framework combining m

This study aimed to validate measures of sedentary time in individuals with Rett syndrome. Twenty-six individuals (median [IQR] age 16.0 (9.4-20.6) years) wore an activPAL accelerometer during video-taped activities and agreement was determined between sedentary time determined by the activPAL and observation. For 11 individuals (median [IQR] age 14.5 (11.5-25.6) years), linear regression was used to determine the relationship between sedentary time recorded on the modified Bouchard activity record diary card and measured using the activPAL. In comparison to observation, the activPAL accuratel

BACKGROUND: Although exercise and daily physical activity (PA) have long been known to benefit patients with chronic disorders, knowledge is limited regarding asthma. OBJECTIVE: In a Danish setting, our aim was to measure physical activity, sedentary behavior, and physical capacity among patients with asthma. We hypothesized that people with severe asthma would be less active and more sedentary than their mild-moderate counterparts. METHODS: Adults with asthma were recruited through respiratory outpatient clinics and subsequently examined twice, 4 weeks apart. At each visit, participants under

BACKGROUND: Excessive sedentary behavior (SB) is highly prevalent among adults in the United States (US). From a socio-ecological perspective, residential segregation may affect SB; however, this remains understudied. Thus, we aimed to examine associations between county-level segregation and sedentary time in a nationwide sample of US adults.
METHODS: For this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 2,637 US adults aged 20-75 years (mean age [45.1 years], female [50.6%]) from the population-based AmeriSpeak panel in 2019. Participants completed the Activities Completed over Time in 24-h
