Febrile seizures.

UNLABELLED: Febrile seizures (FS) are the most common seizure disorder in childhood, affecting 2-5% of children between the ages of 3 and 60 months. Differentiation of FS from acute symptomatic seizures secondary to central nervous system infection is essential. Those with a focal onset, prolonged duration or which occur more than once within the same febrile illness are considered complex and have an increase in risk of subsequent epilepsy development. The vast majority of febrile convulsions are simple, lasting only a few minutes and without need of drug intervention. They have an excellent

Febrile seizures.

BACKGROUND: Febrile convulsions, or febrile seizures, are frequently encountered in paediatrics, and despite often being self limiting, these seizures strike fear in the hearts of patients' carers. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the assessment and management of febrile seizures in children. DISCUSSION: The initial assessment of a child who convulses with fever should be directed at finding a cause for the fever, rather than the seizure itself, once the seizure has abated. A lumbar puncture should be performed if there is clinical suspicion of meningitis. Electroencephalograms and neuroimagi

Febrile seizures.

Febrile seizures are the most common seizure type in childhood. The prognosis is usually benign. Diagnostic evaluation focuses on excluding other causes of seizures and fever, especially central nervous system infections. For most febrile seizures, whether simple or complex, education and counseling are the primary modes of treatment. Given our current state of knowledge, a rational plan of treatment focuses on counseling and preventing prolonged febrile convulsions. An understanding of the natural history and prognosis enables physicians to reassure the families of children with febrile seizu

Febrile seizures: an overview.

BACKGROUND: Febrile seizures are the most common neurologic disorder in childhood. Physicians should be familiar with the proper evaluation and management of this common condition. OBJECTIVE: To provide an update on the current understanding, evaluation, and management of febrile seizures. METHODS: A PubMed search was completed in Clinical Queries using the key terms 'febrile convulsions' and 'febrile seizures'. The search strategy included meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, observational studies, and reviews. RESULTS: Febrile seizures, with a peak incidence betwe

[Febrile seizures--an update].

Febrile seizures are most common seizures in childhood (2-4%). Children with simple febrile seizures only have a slightly increased risk of epilepsy. Recurrences are common. Diagnostic ascertainment is easy, most evaluations simple, diagnostic routine schedules almost not necessary. Prophylactic antipyretic or anticonvulsant therapies are not recommended. Administration of rectal diazepam at home in case of recurrence is useful. Adequate therapeutical approach also includes physicians guidance and information for the dramatically frightened parents who think their child was about to die. Only

Febrile seizures: A review.

Febrile seizures are common, occurring in up to 5% of children in the United States. Frequently perceived by caregivers as a life-threatening event, febrile seizures are a common cause of emergency department visits. The concern for permanent neurologic sequelae and future epilepsy after febrile seizures has resulted in a significant amount of research on these topics. The development of childhood vaccines over the past several decades has led to a significant reduction in childhood bacterial meningitis. This in turn has led to a dramatic change in the evaluation and treatment of febrile seizu

Vaccines and febrile seizures.

Vaccine administration is the second leading cause of febrile seizures (FS). FS occurrence in children is a serious concern because it leads to public apprehension of vaccinations. This review discusses the clinical implications of FS, its potential link to vaccinations and its impact on official recommendations for vaccinations in children. Vaccines such as the pertussis antigen-containing vaccine, the measles-containing vaccine and the influenza vaccine have been linked to FS. However, FS events are very rare and are not usually associated with downstream complications or severe neurologic d

Febrile seizures in children.

Benign febrile convulsions occur early in the course of fever of extracranial origin in children six months to five years old. The first seizure always calls for a spinal tap to exclude meningitis, as well as appropriate studies to exclude other causes of seizure activity. An EEG one week later is indicated but more extensive studies are usually nonproductive. The question of whether to employ long-term phenobarbital therapy has not been resolved.

Febrile and other occasional seizures.

Seizures with fever that result from encephalitis or meningitis usually occur late in the course of febrile illness, and are focal and prolonged. Febrile seizures are by far the most common affecting 5% of the population, followed by posttraumatic seizures and those observed in the setting of a toxic, infectious, or metabolic encephalopathy. This chapter reviews the clinical presentation of the three most common forms, due to fever, trauma, and intoxication. Febrile seizures carry no cognitive or mortality risk. Recurrence risk is increased by young age, namely before 1 year of age. Febrile se

Febrile seizures: treatment and prognosis.

Recent epidemiologic data indicate that the vast majority of children with febrile seizures have a normal longterm outcome. A precise knowledge of the short- and long-term outcome with or without treatment, and short- and long-term side effects is an important prerequisite for assessing the various treatment strategies. We focus on the impact of short-term or prophylactic treatment on the short- and long-term outcome of various types of febrile seizures. There is universal agreement that daily prophylaxis with antiepileptic agents should never be used routinely in simple febrile seizures, but

Febrile seizures: controversy and consensus.

Although febrile convulsions are a relatively common complaint, the approach to their management is far from uniform and highly controversial. This article reviews the consensus statement on febrile convulsions arrived at by the Consensus Development Conference held in 1980 by the National Institutes of Health, together with other literature of interest to family physicians. Guidelines are given for the assessment, diagnosis and emergency treatment of febrile seizures. Epilepsy and atypical febrile convulsions are distinguished from simple febrile seizures. Prognosis, prevention, and the impor

[Febrile seizures: questions and answers].

A febrile seizure occurs in association with fever in a child aged 6 to 60 months, without central nervous system infection or other known cause of acute seizures in a child without a prior history of afebrile seizures. Febrile seizures occur in about 2-5% of children. Central nervous system infections should be considered in patients with febrile seizures, even though the frequency of this possibility is low, especially when patients do not return to baseline. Simple febrile seizures are considered benign events and there are clear guidelines about evaluation and management, but the evaluatio

Molecular genetics of febrile seizures.

Febrile seizures are the most common form of convulsion, occurring in 2-5% of infants in Europe and North America and in 6-9% in Japan. In large families, the febrile seizure (FS) susceptibility trait is inherited by the autosomal dominant pattern with reduced penetrance. Two putative FS loci, FEB1 (chromosome 8q13-q21) and FEB2 (chromosome 19p13.3) have been mapped. A clinical subset of FS, termed generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+), was reported. In GEFS+ families, a mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel beta1 subunit gene (SCN1B) at chromosome 19q13.1 and two muta

Febrile Seizures in Children: A Review.

Fever-induced seizures are referred to as febrile seizures (FSs). The most prevalent kind of epilepsy and neurological illness in infants and young children is FS. With a high occurrence seen between the ages of 12 and 18 months, they frequently affect children aged six months to five years. FS is a benign condition that seldom results in brain damage. Nevertheless, they cause stress and emotional anguish for the parents, who may believe that the death of their child is going to occur during the seizure. Lately, a more broad-based phrase has been used, fever-associated seizures or epilepsy tha

Association between hypocapnia and febrile seizures.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether hyperthermia-induced hyperventilation with subsequent hypocapnia is relevant to febrile seizures in children. This is only the second study to measure pCO2 and pH values in children with febrile seizures. This prospective case-control study enrolled 18 children who presented with febrile seizures and 18 children who presented with a febrile illness without seizures. Venous blood gas analyses were measured both from the febrile seizure and control group. There was no significant difference in mean blood pH between the febrile seizure and control

Assessment of febrile seizures in children.

Febrile seizures are the most common form of childhood seizures, affecting 2-5% of all children and usually appearing between 3 months and 5 years of age. Despite its predominantly benign nature, a febrile seizure (FS) is a terrifying experience for most parents. The condition is perhaps one of the most prevalent causes of admittance to pediatric emergency wards worldwide. FS, defined as either simple or complex, may be provoked by any febrile bacterial or (more usually) viral illness. No specific level of fever is required to diagnose FS. It is essential to exclude underlying meningitis in al

[Risk factors in recurrent febrile seizures].

INTRODUCTION: Febrile convulsions are the most frequent type of seizures in children under 6 years old. They usually have a good prognosis. Only a few of these children will later suffer from non-febrile seizures. The low risk of non-febrile seizures and important side-effects of antiepileptic drugs have limited the use of continuous prophylaxis in children with recurrent febrile seizures. OBJECTIVES: Our aim has been to identify the main factors that imply a higher risk for recurrent febrile convulsions and also to identify the frequency of antiepileptic prophylactic medication in our area.

Childhood febrile seizures (Benin City experience).

About 20% of children admitted during the study period had febrile convulsions, of which 5% were aged below 5 months or above 5 years. The study confirms the view that there is a strong familial predisposition in febrile seizures. Major causes of the rise in temperature in those studied included malaria, which accounted for 32.7%, followed by bronchopneumonia (16.8%), measles (15.4%), otitis media (13.4%) and tonsillitis (10.5%). The morbidity and mortality could be attributable to the socio-cultural background of the community which practices modes of therapy that are often detrimental to the
