Selection bias introduced by neuropsychological assessments.

OBJECTIVE: Two prospective studies in patient with brain tumours were performed comparing the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The first assessed their feasibility and the second compared their diagnostic accuracy against a four-hour neuropsychological assessment (NPA). The introduction of the NPA decreased accrual and retention rates. We were therefore concerned regarding potential selection bias. METHODS: Ninety-two patients were prospectively accrued and subsequently divided into three categories: a) no NPA required b) withdrew consent to N

Corticostriatal Flow of Action Selection Bias.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) performs many functions, including decision making and movement control. It remains unknown which input and output pathways of PPC support different functions. We addressed this issue in mice, focusing on PPC neurons projecting to the dorsal striatum (PPC-STR) and the posterior secondary motor cortex (PPC-pM2). Projection-specific, retrograde labeling showed that PPC-STR and PPC-pM2 represent largely distinct subpopulations, with PPC-STR receiving stronger inputs from association areas and PPC-pM2 receiving stronger sensorimotor inputs. Distinguishing a central selection bias from a central fixation bias: The role of retinal eccentricity in visual selection.

Earlier work has shown that the eyes preferably select stimuli that are presented close to central fixation over stimuli presented further away, suggesting the existence of a central selection bias. However, so far studies have confounded retinal eccentricity with distance from the center of a display, and the observed effects may thus have been driven by what is known as the central fixation bias, which is the preference for items near the center of a display rather than the center of the retina. This study aimed to dissociate the central selection bias from the central fixation bias, and to

Sensitivity analysis of selection bias: a graphical display by bias-correction index.

BACKGROUND: Optimal medical therapy and the management of cardiac risk factors are crucial for the secondary prevention of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, there have been reports on the underutilization of secondary-prevention medications for ACS. This study aimed to investigate adherence of in-hospital prescriptions to clinical practice guidelines for the secondary prevention of ACS using real-world data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected information on ACS patients from national insurance claims data. The in-hospital prescriptions of secondary-prevention medications for post-ACS p

The Roseto Study: Selection Bias Versus Social Support.

Background A landmark study of 1,600 Italian-Americans in Roseto, PA, challenged the prevailing view that high saturated fat intake was a major cause of myocardial infarction (MI). Despite similar rates of cigarette smoking and obesity, and even higher levels of saturated fat consumption compared to neighboring towns, Rosetans experienced far lower MI death rates. More than 50 years later, it remains uncertain whether Roseto's residents had better heart health than the average American and, if so, what protective factors may have been responsible. Methodology We compared MI deaths in Roseto an

Possible selection bias in register-based obesity studies.

Some studies of obesity treatments use control groups identified from real-world registers, which may differ from people with obesity in the general population. We evaluated whether such control groups affect the results. The SOS study examines long-term mortality post-bariatric surgery. Among volunteers with obesity, 2,007 individuals underwent surgery, while a control group of 2,040 individuals was matched using 18 variables. Age was 37-60 years and BMI was ≥ 34/≥38 kg/m2 for men and women, respectively. We subdivided the control group into those with an obesity diagnosis (n = 177) and those

Selection Bias Risk in Randomized Controlled Trials Rated as Low Bias Using Risk of Bias, Version 2 (RoB2) Tool.

Our study aimed to establish the risk of selection bias in randomized controlled trials (RCT) that were overall rated as having "low bias" risk according to Cochrane's Risk of Bias, version 2 (RoB 2) tool. A systematic literature search of current systematic reviews of RCTs was conducted. From the identified reviews, RCTs with overall "high bias" and "low bias" RoB 2 risk ratings were extracted. All RCTs were statistically tested for selection bias risk. From the test results, true positive, true negative, false positive, or false negative ratings were established, and the false omission rate

History-based action selection bias in posterior parietal cortex.

Making decisions based on choice-outcome history is a crucial, adaptive ability in life. However, the neural circuit mechanisms underlying history-dependent decision-making are poorly understood. In particular, history-related signals have been found in many brain areas during various decision-making tasks, but the causal involvement of these signals in guiding behavior is unclear. Here we addressed this issue utilizing behavioral modeling, two-photon calcium imaging, and optogenetic inactivation in mice. We report that a subset of neurons in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) closely reflect

Selection bias in Teratology Information Service pregnancy outcome studies.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy outcome studies conducted through Teratology Information Services (TIS) rely on volunteer subjects. If these subjects tend to have different risk profiles than the population from which they are drawn, the results of TIS studies may have limited generalizability. METHODS: We selected all subjects who enrolled in the California Teratogen Information Service (CTIS) pregnancy outcome study for prenatal exposure to carbamazepine or valproic acid between 1990 and 1997 and who received prenatal care through Kaiser Permanente of Southern California (n = 13). Arrhythmias in mitral valve prolapse. Effect of selection bias.

To assess the contribution of bias in subject selection to the prevalence of arrhythmias in cases of mitral valve prolapse (MVP), we compared ambulatory arrhythmias in 63 patients with MVP and 28 symptom-matched control subjects. All subjects were in sinus rhythm. Mean 24-hour heart rate of the prolapse population was lower than that of the control group (76 v 82 beats per minute). Mean atrial premature complex (APC) density per 1,000 beats (0.9 v 0.7 for patients with MVP and control subjects, respectively) and mean ventricular premature complex (VPC) density per 1,000 total beats (1.2 v 1.5)

Adjusting for selection bias in retrospective, case-control studies.

Retrospective case-control studies are more susceptible to selection bias than other epidemiologic studies as by design they require that both cases and controls are representative of the same population. However, as cases and control recruitment processes are often different, it is not always obvious that the necessary exchangeability conditions hold. Selection bias typically arises when the selection criteria are associated with the risk factor under investigation. We develop a method which produces bias-adjusted estimates for the odds ratio. Our method hinges on 2 conditions. The first is t

Negative selection bias for women inclusion in a clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the growing awareness towards the importance of adequate representation of women in clinical trials among patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), available evidence continues to demonstrate a skewed distribution of study populations in favour of men. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this pre-specified analysis from the MASTER DAPT screening log and trial, we aimed to investigate the existence of a negative selection bias for women inclusion in a randomized clinical trial. A total of 2847 consecutive patients who underwent coronary revascularization across

Common Field Data Limitations Can Substantially Bias Sexual Selection Metrics.

Sexual selection studies widely estimate several metrics, but values may be inaccurate because standard field methods for studying wild populations produce limited data (e.g., incomplete sampling, inability to observe copulations directly). We compared four selection metrics (Bateman gradient, opportunity for sexual selection, opportunity for selection, and smax') estimated with simulated complete and simulated limited data for 15 socially monogamous songbird species with extrapair paternity (4%-54% extrapair offspring). Inferring copulation success from offspring parentage creates nonindepend

Selection bias, interventions and outcomes for survivors of cardiac arrest.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac catheterisation and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) insertion are increasingly common following cardiac arrest survival. However, much of the evidence for the benefit is observational, leaving open the possibility that biased patient selection confounds the association between these invasive procedures and improved outcome. We evaluated the likelihood of selection bias in the association between cardiac catheterisation or ICD placement and outcome by measuring long-term outcomes overall and in a cause-specific approach that separated cardiac mortality from non-c

The HOPE cohort: cohort profile and evaluation of selection bias.

The HOPE cohort is a Danish nationwide cohort with ongoing follow-up, holding information on postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms and diagnoses on 170,218 childbirths (142,795 unique mothers). These data have been linked with extensive register data on health and socioeconomic information on the mothers, their partners, parents, and children. This cohort profile aimed to provide an overview of the data collection and content, describe characteristics, and evaluate potential selection bias. PPD screenings, using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, were collected from 67 of the 98 Danish m

The Potential Effects of Recall Bias and Selection Bias on the Epidemiological Evidence for the Carcinogenicity of Glyphosate.

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide worldwide. The International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015 declared that glyphosate is probably carcinogenic to humans, noting a positive association for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The principal human data on glyphosate and NHL come from five case-control studies and two cohort studies. The case-control studies are at risk of recall bias resulting from information on exposure to pesticides being collected from cases and controls based on their memories. In addition, two of the case-control studies are additionally at risk of a form of selection bi

Investigating and quantifying selection bias in research using placental pathology samples.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing research interest has focused on placental pathology and pregnancy outcomes. Placental pathology examinations that are requested by the delivering provider are often used for research due to convenience, potentially introducing selection bias. We leveraged a large cohort of prospectively collected and examined placentas to compare prevalences of placental pathology and to quantify potential selection bias. METHODS: All placentas were prospectively collected from participants and pathology examinations were completed in the Stress, Pregnancy, and Health (SPAH) study, r
