Biological costs and benefits of selective breeding for disease resistance using marker-assisted or field-based selective breeding in honey bees (Apis mellifera).

Honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) breeders seek to enhance disease resistance by selecting for behavioral resistance traits such as hygienic behavior and Varroa-sensitive hygiene. However, traditional phenotypic assays for these traits are labor-intensive, limiting scalability. Antennal protein biomarkers correlated with these behaviors offer a promising tool for marker-assisted selection (MAS), potentially increasing phenotyping efficiency and accelerating genetic gains. This study evaluated the performance of honey bee colonies from 4 stocks: those selected using field-based phenotypic assays (F

Selective breeding: the future of TB management in African buffalo?

The high prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (BTB) in African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) in regions of southern African has a negative economic impact on the trade of animals and animal products, represents an ecological threat to biodiversity, and poses a health risk to local communities through the wildlife-cattle-human interface. Test and cull methods may not be logistically feasible in many free-range wildlife systems, and with the presence of co-existing BTB hosts and the limited effectiveness of the BCG vaccine in buffalo, there is a need for alternative methods of BTB management. Selective

Selective breeding for magnitude of methamphetamine-induced sensitization alters methamphetamine consumption.

RATIONALE: Genetically determined differences in susceptibility to drug-induced sensitization could be related to risk for drug consumption. OBJECTIVES: Studies were performed to determine whether selective breeding could be used to create lines of mice with different magnitudes of locomotor sensitization to methamphetamine (MA). MA sensitization (MASENS) lines were also examined for genetically correlated responses to MA. METHODS: Beginning with the F2 cross of C57BL/6J and DBA/2J strains, mice were tested for locomotor sensitization to repeated injections of 1 mg/kg MA and bred based on ma

A genome-wide scan for diversifying selection signatures in selected horse breeds.

The genetic differentiation of the current horse population was evolutionarily created by natural or artificial selection which shaped the genomes of individual breeds in several unique ways. The availability of high throughput genotyping methods created the opportunity to study this genetic variation on a genome-wide level allowing detection of genome regions divergently selected between separate breeds as well as among different horse types sharing similar phenotypic features. In this study, we used the population differentiation index (FST) that is generally used for measuring locus-specifi

Transcriptomic insights into the heart and cerebellar vermis of pigeons: Breed-specific differences driven by selective breeding.

To reveal the molecular regulatory differences in physiological adaptations of pigeons with different breeding objectives, this study compared the transcriptomic differences in the hearts and cerebellar vermis of homing pigeons (HP) and meat pigeons (MP). Phenotypic analysis showed that the heart index of HP was significantly higher than that of MP, which helps enhance functions such as blood circulation, supporting the metabolic demands for long-duration activity. However, no significant differences were observed in the cerebellar vermis indices. Transcriptomic analysis identified 162 differe

An IoT-Based Breeding Egg Identification and Coding System for Selection of High-Quality Breeding Geese.

The selection of breeding geese requires the recording of egg production information to correspond to the identity of the breeding geese. However, due to the special physiological characteristics of breeding geese, manual recording in practice can affect the egg-laying performance of breeding geese and can also lead to problems of missing and confusing individual breeding goose data with the number of eggs laid by the geese. For contactless recording of breeding goose identity and egg production information for high-quality breeding, this paper proposes an Internet of things (IoT)-based breedi

Changes Depression- and Anxiety- like Behaviors following Selective Breeding for Cocaine Reinforcement.

The LS and HS are rat lines selectively bred for altered cocaine self-administration. Given the importance of mental health in substance use, these lines were evaluated for putative depression- and anxiety- like behaviors through forced swimming and exploration of a plus maze. We found increases of struggling in LS males, climbing in LS females, and swimming in HS males; with biphasic effects on immobility in the HS strain. HS rats had fewer entries into and less time spent in open arms of the plus maze, consistent with greater anxiety-like behavior, which may contribute to enhanced drug takin

Genetically correlated effects of selective breeding for high and low methamphetamine consumption.

Improved prevention and treatment of drug addiction will require deeper understanding of genetic factors contributing to susceptibility to excessive drug use. Intravenous operant self-administration methods have greatly advanced understanding of behavioral traits related to addiction. However, these methods are not suitable for large-scale genetic experiments in mice. Selective breeding of mice can aggregate 'addiction alleles' in a model that has the potential to identify coordinated effects of multiple genes. We produced mouse lines that orally self-administer high (MAHDR) or low (MALDR) amo

Application of selection index calculations to determine selection strategies in genomic breeding programs.

The availability of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV) allows for possible modifications to existing dairy cattle breeding programs. Selection index calculations including genomic and phenotypic observations as index sources were used to determine the optimal number of offspring per genotyped sire with a focus on functional traits and the design of cooperator herds, and to evaluate the importance of a central station test for genotyped bull dams. Evaluation criteria to compare different breeding strategies were correlations between index and aggregate genotype (r(TI)), and the relative s

Genotyping strategies of selection candidates in livestock breeding programmes.

Benefits of genomic selection (GS) in livestock breeding operations are well known particularly where traits are sex-limited, hard to measure, have a low heritability and/or measured later in life. Sheep and beef breeders have a higher cost:benefit ratio for GS compared to dairy. Therefore, strategies for genotyping selection candidates should be explored to maximize the economic benefit of GS. The aim of the paper was to investigate, via simulation, the additional genetic gain achieved by selecting proportions of male selection candidates to be genotyped via truncation selection. A two-trait

Selection and direct biomarkers of reproductive capacity of breeding boars.

Efficient management of pig reproduction is paramount for the sustainability and productivity of the global pork industry. Modern artificial insemination (AI) breeding programs have greatly benefited from the integration of advanced selection methods and biomarkers to enhance the reproductive performance of boars. While traditional selection methods have relied soley on boar phenotype, such as growth rate and conformation, modern pig breeding has shifted more and more toward molecular and genetic tools, which are still complemented by phenotypic traits. These methods encompass genomics, transc

Trypanotolerance in cattle and prospects for the control of trypanosomiasis by selective breeding.

Tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiasis is one of the major constraints on the expansion of the livestock and agricultural industries in Africa. The disease affects animals and man, with direct and indirect losses estimated in billions of dollars annually. Because of the phenomenon of antigenic variation, no vaccine is available. Current prophylactic efforts must rely on tsetse control by the use of insecticides and on trypanocidal drugs. However, recent advances in our knowledge of tsetse and trypanosome biology are offering hope for alternative methods of trapping tsetse, new drugs and even vacci

Uncertainty-aware breeding decisions: MCMC-based optimum contribution selection increases breeding decision robustness.

Optimum contribution selection (OCS) balances genetic gain and inbreeding by optimizing parental contributions to the next generation, but current implementations rely on point estimates of breeding values that discard the uncertainty inherent in genetic evaluations. We introduce CVaR-OCS, a novel formulation that incorporates the full posterior distribution of estimated breeding values (EBVs) directly into the OCS objective via Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) (a coherent risk measure from financial portfolio theory) allowing a single optimization to simultaneously maximize expected genetic g

Selective breeding for deficient sensorimotor gating is accompanied by increased perseveration in rats.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response is a measure of sensorimotor gating that is deficient in some neuropsychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and Tourette's syndrome. Experimentally induced PPI deficits in rats are regarded as endophenotype to study the biological mechanisms and therapeutic strategies of these disorders. We have recently shown that selectively breeding rats for high and low PPI levels, respectively, leads to groups with different PPI performance that remains stable from the second generation on. We here tested whether the low PPI is accompanied by

Periodic paralysis in quarter horses: a sodium channel mutation disseminated by selective breeding.

We recently reported on a linkage study within a Quarter Horse lineage segregating hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), an autosomal dominant condition showing potassium-induced attacks of skeletal muscle paralysis. HYPP co-segregated with the equine adult skeletal muscle sodium channel alpha subunit gene, the same gene that causes human HYPP. We now describe the Phe to Leu mutation in transmembrane domain IVS3 which courses the horse disease. This represents the first application of molecular genetics to an important horse disease, and the data will provide an opportunity for control or e

Reconsidering the Selection Strategy in a Flemish Honey Bee Breeding Program: Towards Selection by Exclusion.

Selective breeding is widely used to improve honey bee health and colony performance, commonly applying selection based on colony traits. Since 2017, a mass selection program in Flanders, Belgium, has ranked queens according to resilience, productivity and behavior traits. Using longitudinal data (2017-2024), we evaluated the effectiveness of this strategy by assessing colony performance across years and generations. Behavioral traits showed the clearest improvement over time, whereas progress in productivity and especially resilience-related traits remained limited. Offspring of top-ranking q

Assessment of selective breeding effects and selection signatures in Qingyuan partridge chicken and its strains.

Qingyuan partridge chicken (QYM) is a highly regarded native breed in China, highly esteemed for its exceptional breeding characteristics. However, the investigation into the selection signatures and its strains remains largely unexplored. In this study, blood sampling, DNA extracting, and high-depth resequencing were performed in 27 QYMs. Integrating the genomic data of 14 chicken (70 individuals) breeds from other researches, to analyze the genetic structure, selection signatures, and effects of selective breeding within QYM and its 3 strains (QYMA, QYMB, and QYMC). Selective breeding in domestic dogs: How selecting for a short face impacted canine neuroanatomy.

The range of cranial morphology seen in domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) is a direct result of thousands of years of selective breeding. This article is the first to investigate how selection for reduced faces in brachycephalic dogs impacted the neuroanatomy of the canine brain through the analysis of endocasts. Previous research has demonstrated global effects on the shape of the bony cranium as the result of these breeding practices; however, these studies have largely focused on the bony structures of the skull and failed to consider the influence of facial reduction on the soft tissu

Diversifying Selection Between Pure-Breed and Free-Breeding Dogs Inferred from Genome-Wide SNP Analysis.

Domesticated species are often composed of distinct populations differing in the character and strength of artificial and natural selection pressures, providing a valuable model to study adaptation. In contrast to pure-breed dogs that constitute artificially maintained inbred lines, free-ranging dogs are typically free-breeding, i.e., unrestrained in mate choice. Many traits in free-breeding dogs (FBDs) may be under similar natural and sexual selection conditions to wild canids, while relaxation of sexual selection is expected in pure-breed dogs. We used a Bayesian approach with strict false-p
