A Reconsideration of the Self-Compassion Scale's Total Score: Self-Compassion versus Self-Criticism.

The Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) is currently the only self-report instrument to measure self-compassion. The SCS is widely used despite the limited evidence for the scale's psychometric properties, with validation studies commonly performed in college students. The current study examined the factor structure, reliability, and construct validity of the SCS in a large representative sample from the community. The study was conducted in 1,736 persons, of whom 1,643 were included in the analyses. Besides the SCS, data was collected on positive and negative indicators of psychological functioning,

Self-compassion in clinical practice.

Self-compassion is conceptualized as containing 3 core components: self-kindness versus self-judgment, common humanity versus isolation, and mindfulness versus overidentification, when relating to painful experiences. Research evidence demonstrates that self-compassion is related to psychological flourishing and reduced psychopathology. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an 8-week training program, meeting 2.5 hours each week, designed to help participants cultivate self-compassion. MSC contains a variety of meditations (e.g., loving-kindness, affectionate breathing) as well as informal practice

Self-compassion in Treatment and with Ourselves.

PURPOSEOF REVIEW: This article explores the emerging role of compassion in the treatment of individuals who have caused sexual harm. It also brings focus to the importance of self-care and self-compassion for the practitioners who do this work. RECENT FINDINGS: Early studies into interventions designed to prevent offending behavior focused more on risk reduction than client resilience and well-being. The good lives model shifted focus to rehabilitation centered on clients' strengths. Recent critiques highlight the importance of compassion in treatment and self-compassion for practitioners wor

Self-compassion and social anxiety disorder.

Self-compassion refers to having an accepting and caring orientation towards oneself. Although self-compassion has been studied primarily in healthy populations, one particularly compelling clinical context in which to examine self-compassion is social anxiety disorder (SAD). SAD is characterized by high levels of negative self-criticism as well as an abiding concern about others' evaluation of one's performance. In the present study, we tested the hypotheses that: (1) people with SAD would demonstrate less self-compassion than healthy controls (HCs), (2) self-compassion would relate to severi

The effect of an acceptance and commitment therapy-based self-compassion program on self-compassion and psychological flexibility in mothers.

The modern parenting process has become a complex, yet needed, structure that challenges caregivers' ability to manage their own emotional burdens and respond sensitively to their children's developmental needs. In this context, this study aims to examine the effect of a self-compassion psychoeducation program based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on mothers of non-working children aged 4-6, focusing on their levels of self-compassion and psychological flexibility. Conducted using a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 30 volunteer mothers, divided into an experimental and

Directing self-compassion toward maladaptive self-beliefs in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Inducing self-compassion has shown benefits for social anxiety. Typically, individuals focus on a past or upcoming stressful social situation generally with self-compassion writing prompts. The present research evaluated the possible benefits of focusing self-compassionate writing on maladaptive self-beliefs. METHODS: Across both Study 1 (N = 442 students) and Study 2 (N = 229 students pre-selected for high social anxiety), during a single online session (30 minutes), participants reported their endorsement of maladaptive self-beliefs and then were randomly assigned to

Barriers to self-compassion for female survivors of childhood maltreatment: The roles of fear of self-compassion and psychological inflexibility.

Preliminary evidence has demonstrated the benefits of targeting self-compassion in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, survivors of childhood maltreatment may present with unique challenges that compromise the effectiveness of these and other PTSD treatments. Specifically, childhood maltreatment victims often exhibit a marked fear and active resistance of self-kindness and warmth (i.e., fear of self-compassion). Victims may also attempt to control distressing internal experiences in a way that hinders engagement in value-based actions (i.e., psychological inflexibil

Self-compassion and Shame Among Rape Survivors.

Women are at increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression associated with rape, and shame plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of PTSD and depression. Thus, there is a need to identify factors that may decrease shame among female survivors of adult rape. Self-compassion may be one such factor. The present study used path analysis in MPlus version 7.3 to examine the indirect effect of self-compassion on PTSD and depression via rape-related shame. We hypothesized that higher levels of self-compassion would be associated with lower levels of rape-relate

Self-compassion, the 'quiet ego' and materialism.

The research is an investigation of self-compassion and materialism. Self-compassion is when an individual has a caring, non-judgmental view of the self. This quality has been related to lower depression, less negative emotion and higher psychological health (Neff, 2003). Materialism has been consistently associated with low subjective well-being and unhappiness. A related concept is that of the 'quiet ego', which is a less competitive, less self-centered individual with more concern with connecting with others and with personal growth (Wayment et al., 2015). Therefore, it is hypothesized that

Self-Compassion: Evaluation of a Psychoeducational Website.

BACKGROUND: Low levels of self-compassion are associated with a number of mental health problems. Recent findings suggest that self-compassion can be significantly increased through traditional therapist led interventions such as Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC). AIMS: The goal of this study was to assess the impact of a psychoeducational website modeled on MSC on measured levels of self-compassion and two related constructs: shame and rumination. METHOD: Participants (N = 9) were recruited from a pool of university students and employees. Single case AB protocols were used. RESULTS: Analyses

Self-compassion, self-referential caudate circuitry, and adolescent suicide ideation.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth, and depression is a strong proximal predictor of adolescent suicide. It is important to identify psychological factors that may protect against suicide ideation in depressed adolescents. Self-compassion may be such a factor. Converging evidence indicates the inverse association between self-compassion and suicide ideation, but the neural mechanisms underlying their link remain unknown. Because self-referential caudate activity is associated with both self-compassion and suicide ideation, its functional connectivity might explain their rela

Social anxiety and self-compassion in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Social anxiety disorder is a prevalent mental illness with a young onset age. Preliminary evidence suggested that low self-compassion may contribute to adult social anxiety, but research with youth has lagged far behind. This study investigated the relationship between selfcompassion and social anxiety in adolescents. It also examined the mediating role of three cognitive mechanisms: fear of negative evaluation, self-focused attention, and cognitive avoidance. METHODS: A total of 316 adolescents (age 14-18, 54% male) recruited in Scotland, UK, completed 7 questionnaires. RESULT

The role of self-compassion in adults with dyslexia.

The emotional aspect of dyslexia has recently received more attention. A growing body of literature highlights the links between dyslexia and self-perception (such as self-esteem and self-efficacy) and psychopathology (such as anxiety). However, there is no research on self-compassion in adults with dyslexia. The current study aimed to examine the role of self-compassion in relation to self-esteem, self-efficacy and anxiety in adults with dyslexia. We investigated whether facets of self-compassion have distinct roles within these relationships. We also aimed to identify whether self-compassion

Abuse, invalidation, and lack of early warmth show distinct relationships with self-criticism, self-compassion, and fear of self-compassion in personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cultivating self-compassion is increasingly recognized as a powerful method to regulate hyperactive threat processes such as shame and self-criticism, but fear of self-compassion (FSC) can inhibit this. These difficulties are underexplored in personality disorder (PD) despite their prevalence. Furthermore, little evidence exists regarding how these factors relate to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and attachment. METHOD: Fifty-three participants with a diagnosis of PD completed measures including childhood abuse/neglect, invalidation, early warmth, self-compassion, shame, sel

Self-compassion as a shield? Investigating self-compassion's prospective role in buffering the effects of traumatic and negative life events.

Background and Objectives: Existing research highlights the potential role of self-compassion in promoting trauma recovery over time but does not clarify whether an individual's level of self-compassion prior to experiencing a trauma is a protective factor against the onset of symptoms. This prospective study tests whether baseline self-compassion buffers the link between exposure to traumatic or stressful events and subsqeuent mental and behavioral health (post-traumatic stress symptoms, general psychological distress, eating pathology, alcohol use problems, and sexual dissatisfaction) among

Self-Compassion in Adolescents and Young Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Relationship of Self-Compassion to Psychosocial and Physical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at an increased risk for poor physical and mental health due to the complexity of pediatric onset IBD and the unique developmental challenges of this period of life. Self-compassion is increasingly recognized as having an important role in explaining health outcomes and well-being across a range of populations. This study examines the relationship between self-compassion and psychosocial and physical health outcomes in AYAs with IBD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, AYAs with IBD aged 15

Linking alcohol-involved sexual assault to negative emotional outcomes: the relative mediating roles of shame, self-compassion, fear of self-compassion, and self-blame.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol-involved sexual assault (AISA) survivors who were drinking at the time of the assault may be at risk of internalizing victim-blaming myths and stigma. Cognitive-behavioral models posit the link between AISA and negative emotional outcomes may be explained through maladaptive appraisals and coping - i.e., characterological and behavioral self-blame, shame, low self-compassion (i.e., high self-coldness, low self-caring), and fear of self-compassion. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design and community sample of younger adults (N = 409 Canadians, M = 28.2 years old, 51.3%

[Unconditional self-acceptance and self-compassion: another clinic for anorexia nervosa?].

People suffering from anorexia have a particular emotional and cognitive profile (altered body and self-perception, emotional dysregulation, perfectionism, obsessive traits), which the disorder can compensate for through emotional distancing strategies. Self-compassion and unconditional self-acceptance have been shown to have therapeutic effects on the barriers to recovery associated with this profile.
