Self-exclusion program: a longitudinal evaluation study.

Few self-exclusion programs have been evaluated and their long-term impact remains unknown. This study has two main goals: (1) to assess changes in gambling behaviour and gambling problems for self-excluded patrons, and (2) to follow self-excluded gamblers for a two-year period (during and after the self-exclusion period). Individuals who excluded themselves (N = 161 at the initial stage) participated in telephone interviews after signing the self-exclusion agreement and were followed at 6, 12, 18 and 24-months. Results show that according to the DSM-IV, 73.1% of the participants were patholog

The study was concerned with an analysis of the first stage of evaluation of the breast self-examination training program aimed at early detection of cancer. The WHO-sponsored study was conducted in Moscow and embraced 3,097 females. Within the first six months after instruction, 1.3% sought medical advice. Out of the latter cases, pathologic changes were identified in the course of clinical examination in 29 females (breast cancer-2; nodular proliferative mastopathy-2).

Who volunteers for a breast self-examination program? Evaluating the bases for self-selection.

Interest in a free breast self-examination (BSE) teaching program offered to a patient population (n = 1590) was assessed, and a follow-up survey of refusers undertaken to determine difference between participants and refusers. Fifty-one percent of the known, eligible women patients expressed interest in the program and 24% ultimately had the teaching. Participants differed from refusers most notably in terms of less previous experience with BSE, more family history of cancer, a longer relationship with their physicians, and different health beliefs. They state more confidence in the effective

The program consisted of four modules based on Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), covering motivation to change, logging gambling behaviors, planning and implementing gambling-free activities, and managing risk situations. Gambling expenditures were also logged in the program, and their development over time were anal

The Value of Assessing Self-Reported and Biological Indicators of Outcomes in Evaluating HIV Programs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this manuscript, we present recent findings concerning concordance and discrepancy between biological measures and self-reports of these three outcomes of HIV programs: HIV status, adherence to antiretroviral medications (ARVs) and use of and adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis medication (PrEP), and condom use/unprotected sex. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies suggest that three successive rapid HIV tests (for those whose first test in positive) might be reasonably inexpensive and valid biological data to collect to combine with self-reports of HIV status, dried blood s

Evaluation of a self-help program to reduce alcohol consumption among pregnant women.

This study tested a cognitive-behavioral intervention for reducing alcohol consumption among economically disadvantaged pregnant women. The intervention included a 10-minute educational session and a nine-step self-help manual. Women attending public health maternity clinics completed a screening questionnaire, a pretest questionnaire, were randomly assigned to receive the self-help intervention or usual clinic care, and completed a posttest questionnaire. A higher alcohol quit rate was observed among the intervention participants (88%) than controls (69%). The effect was strongest for "light"

Advanced Research Institute Scholars' Perspectives on Program Success: A Self-determination Theory Evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: The Advanced Research Institute (ARI) is a National Institute of Mental Health-funded career development program designed to progress early-career investigators with specializations in geriatric mental health to scientific independence. Scholars who participate in ARI demonstrate a threefold greater likelihood of securing independent funding (e.g., an R01) relative to nonparticipants, yet scholar perspectives are not represented in the literature. DESIGN: To explain scholars' views on ARI's effectiveness, this paper adopts Self-Determination Theory as a guiding framework, which pos

AIM: The Self-Compassion-Based Childbirth and Parenting Preparation Program (SCPPP) for newly expecting couples is designed to activate self-compassion at challenging moments, induce calm, and enhance co-parenting motivation during the perinatal period. However, how the program affects participants' learning processes remains unknown. This study aimed to clarify the working mechanisms of the SCPPP. METHODS: Between 2022 and 2023, a total of 18 participants (9 couples) were recruited in Japan through obstetric checkups and snowball sampling. They attended 5-week prenatal and 1-day postnatal on

OBJECTIVE: To determine recent residents' confidence in managing problems in obstetrics and gynecology. STUDY DESIGN: All former residents from 1998 to 2002 were invited to participate. They were asked to complete a 32-item survey to assess confidence in obstetric and gynecologic care using Likert-scale responses. The study was approved by the local institutional review board. The t test was used for statistical analysis; p<0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Twenty-eight individuals graduated from the program during the study period; 61% responded to the survey. Respondents reported t

OBJECTIVE: In a pilot study, our group showed that an internet-based self-management program improves self-efficacy in systemic sclerosis (SSc). The objective of the current study was to compare an internet-based self-management program to a patient-focused educational book developed to assess measures of self-efficacy and other patient-reported outcomes in patients with SSc. METHODS: We conducted a 16-week randomized, controlled trial. Evaluating self-efficacy as a treatment mechanism during an intensive treatment program for posttraumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Although traumatic exposures are common, only a small percentage of people exposed to trauma go on to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This phenomenon suggests that there may be psychological factors that influence posttraumatic recovery trajectories. Beliefs about one's ability to cope with traumatic events have been proposed as a mechanism of posttraumatic recovery. The present study evaluated coping self-efficacy (CSE) as a treatment mechanism. METHOD: Data were collected from 423 military service members and veterans who completed a 2-week cognitive processing ther
