Historically, the view of elder mistreatment in the United States has been similar to that of child abuse and has been detrimental to the understanding of elder mistreatment. Until recently, there was little understanding of the complexity of elder mistreatment and the legal system lacked appropriate laws with which to handle this growing problem. Over the last two decades, legislation, laws, and criminal codes of conduct have been developed to tackle the problem of elder mistreatment. However, little knowledge or understanding of the public health problems and legal implications related to th

Two cases of self-neglect in adult patients with no psychiatric diagnosis are reported. The presentation included domestic squalor and hoarding of rubbish, with the patients living alone and having a history of schizoid and paranoid personality traits. Both refused all recommended help. A move to more protected accommodation was the only practical measure that led to a degree of improvement.

Self-neglect is a recognised, but poorly emphasised, complication of spinal cord injury, with a prevalence in this study of 9% of a consecutive sample of 400 patients. Self-neglect may be the presenting symptom of problems related to adjustment to disability, a major depressive disorder (DSM III criteria), or a clear and rational wish to die (existential self-neglect). Management is discussed, emphasising the importance of respecting spinal injured patients' autonomy.

Self-neglect is an inability or refusal to meet one's own basic needs as accepted by societal norms and is the most common report received by state agencies charged with investigating abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable adults. Self-neglect is often seen in addition to one or multiple conditions of frailty, mild to severe dementia, poor sleep and depression. While awareness of elder self-neglect as a public health condition and intervention has significantly risen in the past decade as evidenced by the increasing amount of literature available, research on self-neglect still lacks co

This is the case report of RB, a 68-year-old retired woman who, following an extensive right sided ischaemic stroke, showed hemiplegia, anosognosia and allochiria, but no somato-sensory deficits and no visuospatial neglect. A high resolution 3D MRI structural scan of her brain was acquired to define the structural damage in detail. Morphometric analyses of grey and white matter data revealed a large lesion which involved most of her right parietal, temporal, and mesial frontal cortex, with partial sparing of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and part of the posterior corpus callosum. Older adults with severe self-neglect have multiple deficits in various social, functional and physical domains, and often live insqualor. These individuals often present with poor personal hygiene, domestic squalor and hoarding which results in a threat to their own health as well as personal and public safety. Severe self-neglect occurs along a continuum with older adults often having cognitive and affective disorders compared with younger individuals presenting with psychiatric illnesses. In cases of severe self-neglect with hoarding, evidence has shown this behavior occurs in diverse socia

BACKGROUND: We aimed to screen self-neglect in older adults before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, to evaluate the effect of the pandemic on self-neglect, and to evaluate the relationship between self-neglect and geriatric syndromes in this study.
METHODS: Older adults ≥65 years old and without dementia who applied to a single-centre geriatric outpatient clinic between December 2023 and May 2024 were included in the study. We performed self-neglect screening for the pre- and post-pandemic era with the Istanbul Medical School Elder Self-Neglect questionnaire. Additionally, comprehensive geria

PURPOSE: Pain is a worldwide health concern leading to cognitive impairments, depression, and decline in activities of daily living when poorly controlled. Self-neglect is also a serious public health issue being the most common allegation reported to Adult Protective Services (APS). The purpose of this analysis is to determine whether self-reported pain is associated with validated cases of self-neglect compared with matched controls.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 80 (APS) validated cases of self-neglect aged 65 years and older and 80 control participants recruited from a geria

BACKGROUND: The aging adult population faces increasing challenges, including self-neglect and declining self-esteem, that significantly affect quality of life and psychosocial well-being. Addressing these issues has become a public health priority. Despite the topic’s importance, limited research has examined the relationship between self-neglect and self-esteem in the context of home care services. This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-neglect and self-esteem among older adults receiving home care services in Istanbul, Turkey. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive s

PURPOSE: Elder self-neglect is a global public health issue and should be taken seriously at large. Nurses, usually working directly with elderly patients, have a better understanding of what factors may cause elder self-neglect. In this qualitative study, we explored the influencing factors of elder self-neglect from the perception of nurses in the context of Chinese culture.
METHODS: Face-to-face, in-depth interviews were conducted from November 2018 to December 2018. Purposive sampling was used. Twenty one participants recruited from eight geriatric wards of a general hospital located in W

Self-neglect (SN) and frailty in older adults is associated with increased disability and mortality. Despite these commonalities, there have been no studies objectively assessing frailty in older adults who SN. This secondary analysis classified frailty in N = 37 older adults with Adult Protective Services validated SN using the Fried Frailty Phenotype (FFP) of weight loss, weakness, exhaustion, activity level, and walking speed. Overall, 3% were classified as robust, 62% as prefrail, and 35% as frail. Most (72%) were overweight/obese, with clinically significant decreases in activity level (6

BACKGROUND: Several measures are available to assess childhood physical and sexual abuse, but few measures focus specifically on neglect and little psychometric research on measures exists. This paper aims to fill a gap in the field by describing a new instrument to measure childhood neglect retrospectively and providing information about construct, predictive, and discriminant validity using adults with documented histories of childhood neglect.
METHODS: Data are from a large prospective, longitudinal study of abused and neglected children and matched controls followed up and assessed in adu

Experiences of psychosocial neglect affect the developing brain and may place individuals at increased risk for anxiety. The majority of research in this area has focused on children who have experienced severe psychosocial deprivation; it is not clear whether typical variation in neglect experienced in community samples would have the same neurobiological consequences as those documented in extreme samples. The present study examined the associations among self-reported childhood neglect, amygdala volume, and anxiety symptoms in a community sample of 138 adolescents ages 9-15 years (43% male)

BACKGROUND: Youth addiction often unfolds within landscapes of neglect, yet adult accounts of these histories are commonly gathered through one-off interviews or clinical assessments. This study examined how adults in stable recovery narrate adolescent alcohol and other drug use and associated neglect through handwritten diary-style writing, and what such writing contributes methodologically to qualitative inquiry across time.
METHODS: This paper reports a secondary analysis of community-generated qualitative materials produced through the SIDINL peer-support and mental health recovery networ

A 29-year-old man presented with progressive behavioural changes, expressed mainly in the form of increasing of apathy and self-neglect. The initial differential diagnosis included a psychotic disorder, a mood disorder or a personality disorder. After a month of medication-free observation and uncertainty regarding the results of various diagnostic approaches, we decided to use MR-imaging; this revealed a frontal meningioma which had invaded the entire frontal lobe. Although patients with some types of somatic disorders frequently present with psychiatric symptoms, there are often indications
