The semantic component of the evoked potential of differentiation.

This work analyzes data from recordings of (occipital and temporal) cortical evoked potentials (called evoked potentials of differentiation (EPD) occurring in humans in response to an abrupt substitution of stimuli. As stimuli we used three groups of words: the names of the ten basic colors taken from Newton's color circle; the names of seven basic emotions forming Shlossberg's circle of emotions; and seven nonsense words comprised of random combinations of letters. Within each group of word stimuli we constructed a matrix of the differences between the amplitudes of mid-latency components of

Differential neural correlates underlying visuospatial versus semantic reasoning in autistic children.

While fronto-posterior underconnectivity has often been reported in autism, it was shown that different contexts may modulate between-group differences in functional connectivity. Here, we assessed how different task paradigms modulate functional connectivity differences in a young autistic sample relative to typically developing children. Twenty-three autistic and 23 typically developing children aged 6 to 15 years underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning while completing a reasoning task with visuospatial versus semantic content. We observed distinct connectivity patte

Differential intrinsic functional connectivity changes in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia.

The semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by semantic memory deficits with relatively preserved motor speech, syntax, and phonology. There is consistent evidence linking focal neurodegeneration of the anterior temporal lobes (ATL) to the semantic deficits observed in svPPA. Less is known about large-scale functional connectivity changes in this syndrome, particularly regarding the interplay between affected and spared language networks that leads to the unique cognitive dissociations typical of svPPA. Using whole-brain, seed-based connecti

SRDFNet: Semantic Refinement and Differential Features for High-Resolution Change Detection.

To address misclassification and reduced accuracy in semantic change detection caused by class imbalance and variable object sizes, this paper improves BGSNet and proposes a new change detection network, SRDFNet (Semantic Refinement and Differential Features). Based on BGSNet's framework, it introduces three complementary modules: (1) a hierarchical graph module (HGM) that converts multi-scale feature maps into compact semantic graph nodes, using graph attention for intra-layer and cross-level semantic interaction to enhance topological relationship perception; the HGM mitigates the effects of

A Brief Drawing Task for the Differential Diagnosis of Semantic Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Semantic dementia (SD) is a subtype of frontotemporal lobe degeneration characterized by semantic loss, with other cognitive functions initially preserved. SD requires differential diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Semantic knowledge can be evaluated through different tests; however, most of them depend on language. OBJECTIVE: We describe the development of a brief drawing task that may be helpful for the differential diagnosis of SD. METHODS: Seventy-two patients, including 32 AD, 19 bvFTD, and 21 SD were asked to dra

Differential effects of early hippocampal pathology on episodic and semantic memory.

Global anterograde amnesia is described in three patients with brain injuries that occurred in one case at birth, in another by age 4, and in the third at age 9. Magnetic resonance techniques revealed bilateral hippocampal pathology in all three cases. Remarkably, despite their pronounced amnesia for the episodes of everyday life, all three patients attended mainstream schools and attained levels of speech and language competence, literacy, and factual knowledge that are within the low average to average range. The findings provide support for the view that the episodic and semantic components

The semantic differential questionnaire format warrants consideration for use in healthcare settings.

BACKGROUND: Semantic differential scales, in which respondents rate their relative agreement between two opposing statements, are rarely used in assessment of health related quality of life (QOL). Here we present a use-case study describing our experiences constructing such a scale, part of a larger project to generate a questionnaire, the VALVQ, to measure QOL in heart valve disease (HVD). METHODS AND RESULTS: Individuals with HVD were identified from echocardiographic databases. Initial questionnaire content was generated from semi-structured interviews with 34 individuals with HVD as well a

Differential episodic and semantic memory performance in Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementias.

Differential performance on measures of episodic and semantic memory were examined in AD, cortical vascular dementia (CVaD), subcortica] vascular dementia (SVaD), and controls. Groups were matched on age, education, and gender; dementia groups also were matched on severity. Recognition/retrieval differences were found only between SVaD and AD groups, not between CVaD and AD. Thus, recognition/retrieval differences are likely secondary to subcortical pathology rather than to vascular etiology per se. Similarly, significant numbers of memory errors were associated with cortical pathology, regard

Differential Involvement of the Anterior Temporal Lobes in Famous People Semantics.

The ability to recognize a famous person occurs through semantic memory. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) are involved in the recognition of famous people. However, it is still a matter of debate whether the semantic processing of names or pictures of famous people has an impact on the activation of ATLs. The aim of this study was to explore the pattern of activation associated with a semantic processing of famous people based on face and written name stimuli. Fifteen healthy young individuals participated in our fMRI study, in which they were as

Differential reorganization of episodic and semantic memory systems in epilepsy-related mesiotemporal pathology.

Declarative memory encompasses episodic and semantic divisions. Episodic memory captures singular events with specific spatiotemporal relationships, whereas semantic memory houses context-independent knowledge. Behavioural and functional neuroimaging studies have revealed common and distinct neural substrates of both memory systems, implicating mesiotemporal lobe (MTL) regions such as the hippocampus and distributed neocortices. Here, we explored declarative memory system reorganization in patients with unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) as a human disease model to test the impact of vari

Differential-Privacy-Based Collaborative Protection for Visual and Location Data in UAV Semantic Communications.

Unmanned aerial vehicle semantic communications are increasingly required in low-altitude sensing, intelligent inspection, and emergency response, where raw image transmission is difficult to sustain under limited onboard resources and time-varying air-to-ground links. Meanwhile, the simultaneous transmission of visual semantic features and object-centre location metadata under third-party eavesdropping creates a dual-privacy vulnerability: an attacker can exploit both to reconstruct sensitive content. In this paper, we propose a differential privacy-based collaborative protection framework th

Differentiating hemispheric contributions to syntax and semantics in patients with left-hemisphere lesions.

Understanding the relationship between brain and cognition critically depends on data from brain-damaged patients since these provide major constraints on identifying the essential components of brain-behavior systems. Here we relate structural and functional fMRI data with behavioral data in 21 human patients with chronic left hemisphere (LH) lesions and a range of language impairments to investigate the controversial issue of the role of the hemispheres in different language functions. We address this issue within a dual neurocognitive model of spoken language comprehension in which core lin

Differential effects of top-down crossmodal attention on subjective timing of semantic and syntactic violations.

Prior knowledge violations about the world's consistency can distort subjective time perception. Scenes containing contextually irrelevant objects (i.e., semantic violations) are typically underestimated in duration (i.e., perceived shorter), whereas those violating basic spatial norms (i.e., syntactic violations) are often overestimated (i.e., perceived longer) as compared to standard scenes without violations. Previous research has shown that directing attention toward such violations through low-level attentional manipulations can dilate their perceived duration. However, it remains unclear

A Psychometric Analysis of the Polish Online Version of the Aging Semantic Differential Scale (ASD).

BACKGROUND: Nursing students will become professionals providing direct care to an aging population in the future. Given that students' attitudes evolve during their studies, an important element of medical education should be addressing the issue of ageism, verifying false beliefs, promoting the subjectivity as well as individuality of older people in the education process. The aim of the study was to analyse the psychometrics of the Polish online version of the Aging Semantic Differential Scale (ASD). METHODS: The study was conducted among 384 students of bachelor's and master's degree stud

Differential Influence of Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Lesions on Neural Representations of Schema and Semantic Category Knowledge.

Prior knowledge, such as schemas or semantic categories, influences our interpretation of stimulus information. For this to transpire, prior knowledge must first be reinstated and then instantiated by being applied to incoming stimuli. Previous neuropsychological models implicate the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in mediating these functions for schemas and the anterior/lateral temporal lobes and related structures for categories. vmPFC, however, may also affect processing of semantic category information. Here, the putative differential role of the vmPFC in the reinstatement and inst

Clustering and switching during a semantic verbal fluency test contribute to differential diagnosis of cognitive impairment.

The verbal fluency test (VFT) can be dissociated into "clustering" (generating words within subcategories) and "switching" (shifting between clusters), which may be valuable in differential diagnosis. In the current study, we investigated the validity of VFT in the differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 65), vascular dementia (VaD, n = 65), mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 92), and vascular cognitive impairment without dementia (VCIND, n = 76) relative to cognitively normal senior controls (NC, n = 374). We found that in the NC group, the total correct score was significantl

[Female-to-male transsexual's stereotype among university men and women on the basis of semantic differential].

AIM: The aim of this study is to determine female-to-male transsexual's (FtM) stereotypes created in female and male university students and comparing them in the analysed groups. METHOD: 300 university students (from the Technical University of Łódź, University of Łódź, Medical University of Łódź) received a questionnaire with 10 pairs of the opposite meaning adjectives (good-bad, weak-strong, fast-slow, ugly-pretty, fat-thin, suppressed-loud, clever-stupid, light-heavy, active-passive, kind-cruel) related to a notion 'female -to-male transsexual' and placed on the extremes of the 7-point sc

Differential cortical contribution of syntax and semantics: An fMRI study on two-word phrasal processing.

Linguistic expressions consist of sequences of words combined together to form phrases and sentences. The neurocognitive process handling word combination is drawing increasing attention among the neuroscientific community, given that the underlying syntactic and semantic mechanisms of such basic combinations-although essential to the generation of more complex structures-still need to be consistently determined. The current experiment was conducted to disentangle the neural networks supporting syntactic and semantic processing at the level of two-word combinations. We manipulated the combinat

Famous faces and voices: Differential profiles in early right and left semantic dementia and in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Famous face and voice recognition is reported to be impaired both in semantic dementia (SD) and in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), although more severely in the former. In AD a coexistence of perceptual impairment in face and voice processing has also been reported and this could contribute to the altered performance in complex semantic tasks. On the other hand, in SD both face and voice recognition disorders could be related to the prevalence of atrophy in the right temporal lobe (RTL). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was twofold: (1) to investigate famous faces and voices reco

Semantic distance for hypothesis generation in differential diagnosis: a framework to support the pivot and cluster strategy.

The pivot and cluster strategy (PCS) is an emerging approach to diagnostic hypothesis generation. In this strategy, clinicians generate an initial intuitive diagnosis (the pivot) along with a cluster of diseases with similar clinical representations for systematic consideration. Although PCS was proposed to prevent diagnostic error, a knowledge gap remains in its practical implementation: existing differential diagnosis lists rely primarily on individual expertise, lacking reproducibility and scalability. We have previously proposed that deliberately exploring diseases at a moderate semantic d
